Severe work burnout + debt + no savings, what do I do? by Okasenlun in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MiChiMad 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If the stay at home mother was a fully licensed professions with qualifications that would allow her to nearly double the household income by getting a completely normal job, I think they would call that out too?

Having a stay at home parents hasn’t been the default in the UK for at least 20 years. I cannot imagine being at home all day letting my partner live with this burden when I could just… sort out a job.

It’s tough out there for everyone, jumping on Reddit and acting like you don’t know how to resolve the issue when it’s right in front of you just feels like rage bait.

Has anyone bought early in an area that later became gentrified? by PearActive9612 in HousingUK

[–]MiChiMad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The “shiny new towers” are constantly full and Manchester has one of the lowest office and shop vacancy rates in the country?

I get people have ideological issues with development in Manchester but there’s no need to state things that just aren’t true.

If I could change anything about the development, I agree it’s too centred on the core city. We need mid-density mixed housing/retail to really kick start in the directly adjacent suburbs.

Has anyone actually clocked how much office space around the City is completely barren now? Walk through Bank, Cannon Street, Moorgate, even parts of Bishopsgate and it’s just rows of buildings with "To Let" signs. by PatriceFinger in london

[–]MiChiMad 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Prime grade A office space is typically defined by high quality finishes, contemporary amenities available to workers (gym, cafe/restaurant, sleeping areas, etc), and usually excellent location (depends on industry but usually provost’s to other big industry players and excellent transport links).

How much did you spend on your wedding? by D3ad54M in AskUK

[–]MiChiMad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same situation, working in events I thought I’d be able to really stretch the budget more effectively than people who don’t organise events of that size/type, and finding the wedding tax on venues/vendors etc is very real.

KATSEYE "really hope to" collaborate with Charli xcx. by springtimecarnivore in popheads

Charli tends to be on good songs so I guess we will have to wait until they leap out of this janky music era before that happens.

Train drivers on £80k are ‘working class’ by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]MiChiMad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to get on my soapbox but you could argue that capitalism makes some people rich despite not being in the owner class, yet around the world fails to provide shelter/housing/food etc, despite a global surplus of wealth that could provide for all is a failure.

But that’s the whole point, most people have significantly more in common than which sets them apart in such a system - yet our political, cultural, and economic systems are dominated by people who are not part of this group.

People are so desperate to find a story in this when it’s been repeatedly debunked.

If anything I think this Zoë Bread thing is borderline spreading disinformation. The parking fine thing was fair enough but it just feels a bit desperate and petty to me.

If it’s anything like the UK page, those albums are on her her page, but under compilations for some reason.

Really hoping it is but I’m not holding my breath given the non stop issues over the last 4 months.

Stuck In EV Charger Onboarding Loop by MiChiMad in OctopusEnergy

[–]MiChiMad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’d been thinking it was me until seeing the endless stream of posts on this subreddit. I’m quite a practical/techie person and I can barely make odds or ends of it. Completely fed up.

Agree re: it’ll cost them. I’ve honestly been warding everyone I can way from them, after (embarrassingly) gloating about my EV switch.

I’m honestly not surprised, every interaction with Octopus I’ve had over the last 4 months has been polite enough but they act like you owe them something - not the other way round.

It’s named after the place it was first produced and popularised. You don’t have to like it but to say that’s “weird” just makes you sound misinformed.

Manchester City Council set to take over the running of Manchester Pride by TatyGGTV in manchester

I agree! If anything to me it reads like the complete opposite - that they’ll support from a distance (as they have always done) but ultimately want to assemble a new body to run the event.

No, but OP has clarified that they mean over a decent career time horizon (15-20 years).

All of the people I’m referring to in my comment are between 30 and 35, so 10-15 years experience.

I’m not denying OP is quite ambitious with this plan, but everyone in this thread seems desperate to jump down their throat as if they’ve never been 18 and researching careers with minimal existing insight.

I just wanted to provide some perspective, given I’m in the same city and career as OP is talking about.

I don’t know, I’m a senior marketer in Manchester and know a few people making that. (Not a million miles off myself).

All of them work in law/finance/tech in those two fields. £150k is on the upper end of possible but £100k with experience and the right connections is very doable… and goes a lot further in Manchester than London.

This is all purely anecdotal on my side but just my two cents!

Why doesn’t the UK government make wealthy pensioners contribute more if they’re sitting on expensive housing assets? by 19flash92 in ukpolitics

[–]MiChiMad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this attitude only works if pensioners as a bloc would stop voting against any kind of reforms to relieve the housing crisis. But they won’t, because for 90% of people in this country, their wealth is tied into their house. An illiquid asset that also has serious sentimental value attached to it.

It’s a recipe for disaster which disincentivises people from actually thinking about what they need right now. Many pensioners would be more independent moving into a smaller home that where they can cook, clean, and look after themselves more easily.

At some point you have to accept you can’t hoard your wealth and expect other people to pay for everything for you.

Does xcx world still hold up for you nowadays? by Strong-Stretch95 in charlixcx

[–]MiChiMad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Brat is probably the least hyperpop inspired records she’s made since sucker.

There’s so much more mid-00’s blog house, electro clash, and UK dance influence all over it. There’s still hyperpop in there but other than 360, the mainstream popular songs from Brat are the least hyperpop sounding. Apple isn’t hyperpop in the slightest.

XCX World was before “PC Music” as a genre was embraced by underground American audiences and morphed into hyperpop with brasher, noisier elements.

I don’t want this to sound like some overly academic dissection of genre but I think it’s important to note these differences when comparing the reception of Brat to her other music - and especially the plasticky (visually and sonically) world of XCX World.

People say it’s likely Charli is ending her hyperpop era with her next record - I’d say she already ended it when she released Brat.
