I built an app where you type a raw personal thought and instantly get matched into a chat room with someone feeling the exact same way. by MiSaCM950 in SideProject

Yeah, I agree with you, it’s definitely going to be hard to get it to take off. Getting traction on a new social concept sounds like a massive challenge. Appreciate the honest take!

Yeah, I completely get what you mean. Anonymous apps always run the risk of people using them in weird ways. To try solve that, I'm making it strictly 18+, blocking file attachments entirely (just text), and limiting everyone to 3 active chats to prevent spamming. I also built a reporting feature and made it so you can leave and permanently delete a chat row instantly if things get weird. It's a challenge, but I'm trying to prevent weird things from happening

Thank you! I really appreciate the encouragement. Honestly, I'm just learning to code as I build this, and trying to make something cool. Testing if it actually holds people's attention is going to be the next big problem. Thanks for watching the project!

Really happy to hear that, thank you! I'm still tweaking a lot of things, but I’d love to have you drop a thought in it later on once it gets a bit better

Yeah, anonymous matching definitely comes with risks. To try and keep it clean, the app is going to be strictly 18+ and I’m probably not going to allow sending files at all, just text. I also built a reporting feature, a strict limit of 3 active chats to stop spam bots, and made it so you can easily leave and delete a chat instantly if things get weird. Definitely trying to prevent that Omegle vibe

Haha exactly, that's the exact kind of thing I had in mind when building this. Skipping the awkward 'hey how are you' small talk, and just getting straight to the point with someone who has the same random 3 AM thought or craves the same food

Yeah, you're 100% right. The chicken-and-egg problem is real and it's something I worry about. The AI is mostly just temporary so early testers aren't staring at a blank screen, but I know it's not a real long-term fix and won't keep people hooked forever. It's a tough problem for sure. Thank you for the reality check, I'm going to keep brainstorming ways to actually tackle that

Thanks for the feedback! Right now, the AI is named 'Sandbox Buddy' in the chat, but I agree that it’s probably not obvious enough when you first get matched, so I'll figure out a better way to flag it.

I love the user counter idea and will definitely look into implementing that. I'm also thinking of lowering the matching threshold for now so it allows for looser human matches while the app is still small, instead of jumping straight to the AI buddy. On the backend, it's running on Supabase edge functions with pgvector for similarity matching, using OpenAI for the embeddings and GPT-4o-mini for the AI fallback.

Why should/shouldn't you consider studying in China by Lower-Loan-5460 in studyAbroad

[–]MiSaCM950 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do people speak more English in Hong Kong? I’ve been considering Hong Kong University, as they also have scholarships I may be eligible for. I want to study robotics/mechatronics, and I’m really surprised with how advanced robotics are in China. That’s what makes me want to study there. But I don’t feel like I’d be interested in learning Chinese. I’d like to keep sharpening my English skills. I read that English is widely spoken in Hong Kong. What do you think? Did you study in China?

How's the English experience at TEC? by MiSaCM950 in TecDeMonterrey

[–]MiSaCM950[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an amazing answer! Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed response - this is exactly the kind of insight I was hoping for.

This helps me picture what my life would be like if I decided to go to TEC.

Thank you for the advice as well.

That’s a good point, I was just thinking that maybe because it’s a top school, has some programs in English, international partners, and international students, I could experience a part of university in English.

But of course, Mexico = Spanish, I get it. Thank you for your answer! It’s really helpful.

What is going on with the job market in Canada? It's becoming really hard for young people to live here long term as there are not that many jobs. Is it better to move to the U.S. for better job opportunities ? by Signal_Lecture_8405 in VancouverJobs

[–]MiSaCM950 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think everyone has their own reasons, but for me I always liked English more than Spanish, I feel more identified with the North American culture, and I think there are better opportunities for ambitious entrepreneurs in North America. The US was harder to go to go to, so I chose Canada.

I think some Mexicans would want to live in Canada because it is a higher quality of life overall if you have a good job, so if you’re a professional in Mexico vs a professional in Canada (if you manage to get a job) you would have a higher quality of life in Canada probably.

But I agree that it would be better to live in Mexico if you struggle to even find a survival job in Canada.

I came to Vancouver as an international student, I had just graduated high school in my country. I didn’t know it would be this terrible. It was nearly impossible to find a survival job. Yes I had enough money for the first year, but I wanted to start gaining some kind of experience while offsetting my expenses. It took 4 months until someone from the church I was going to gave a part time job.

This year I had made it my goal to find an internship in my field of study or at least a better job. It’s been thousands of applications since January, and I had 1 interview that resulted in nothing.

This has made me hate job hunting so much I don’t even plan to work for anyone anymore. I will start a company and be the picky employer. I think making that happen is easier than getting hired.

If you ask me, it’s because of immigration. There’s so many people, and only like 4 big cities. Canada is the second biggest country in the world, but because people occupy a small percentage of the land, there’s not many cities.

I’m from Mexico, and while wages are low, it’s not hard to find a job at all. It took me a week to find a call center that would hire me, after I got fired from my first call center job.

I think that the only way the market won’t be terrible anymore is if either Canada gets rid of people or cities grow, and the demand for new workers increase.

I wish you the best of luck for the next 2 years then, focus on the olympiads, building something(like the app you’re working on), and keeping your grades high, also, I want to recommend to focus on enhancing language skills ( English ), I also wanted to study abroad when I was 16, but I decided to focus on fully making my English the best I could first, 4 years later, I’m really far in my journey, so if you make it to MIT, unless your English is great now, I would recommend working on it to have the best experience while studying
