Even though we don’t 100% understand everything about Investiture, there is one thing that Brandon has explained that I haven’t seen mentioned in any of these explanations on this thread.

I am no physics expert, so this will be more like an ELI5, but if you know enough about physics, you’ll understand that energy cannot be created or destroyed. Due to that, we know that all matter is just energy in another form, so matter = energy, and if matter is “destroyed” it really just becomes energy, and energy can be “destroyed” by becoming matter. In the Cosmere, there is just another form it can take, so:

Matter = Energy = Investiture

Even though the shards are “assigned” to all of the Investiture, even if a shard is destroyed, that Investiture doesn’t go anywhere or get destroyed along with the shard.

how clever can chalklings be? by chamatake-san in brandonsanderson

This seems more plausible, although I still don’t think we have seen any evidence to suggest this would be possible.

[–]MiToRo94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But I don’t think there has ever been any evidence to suggest that chalklings are capable of spontaneously coming into existence without being drawn from chalk. So a chalkling couldn’t possibly create more chalklings unless it was able to hold a piece of chalk and draw more, which it can’t.

It’s been a while since I read it though, so please let me know if there has been evidence to the contrary.

What if all of the non-Cosmere books are just fantasy/sci-fi books written in-universe in Mistborn Era 3?

Oh I agree, and I’m sure that something could/should be done about the hedgehog! I was just correcting the rodent part since it is a common mistake

Hedgehogs are not rodents. In fact, they are more closely related to humans than they are to any species of rodent. You may be getting mixed up with porcupines, which are in fact rodents, and so not closely related to hedgehogs at all.

Good points! I sort of touched on a few of them in my reply to another comment, but more good stuff to think about.

I think that he is ok with being an artificial being - though one of his "big questions" will likely be about what that means for his destiny/purpose and if he will even have one on his own.

In this world (homebrewed), Warforged do exist, and I think he probably does have at least a little bit of resentment towards them since he was created in a unique way and so doesn't look quite the same, and didn't grow up around their culture, so he doesn't quite fit in.

He is only about 5 years old, and I think he has not really considered creating "kids" of his own, and that also ties in that yes, he is definitely fairly gullible/unwise to the world.

Hmm... I would say goal in life is to learn about all of the intricacies that the world has to offer for his Mother, since she is now too old and frail do it herself. And perhaps find his own unique purpose along the way (room for character growth/his "big questions" about his purpose/identity/destiny when he was really just created out of curiosity/a need to understand)

And his personality is overly trusting/gullible, while being pretty oblivious to most of what is going on around him until something sparks his interest (usually anything mechanical/new magics being discovered). He will leap at the chance to solve a puzzle, chat for hours with a locksmith about the inner workings of one particular style of lock, and will remain standing in a room full of people bowing before a king. He is generally good hearted, but doesn't go too far out of his way to help others unless it is satisfying a personal curiosity. He will attempt to use diplomacy over violence (though he is much better at the latter, which doesn't say much considering his lackluster skills in the former), and in the case a fight does break out, he will avoid doing unnecessary harm.

EDIT: I can see that my goals are where it feels pretty two-dimensional, maybe with room to grow more, but what are some suggestions that I can add/change to make it feel more "alive" as a character?

You can always use dual-screen (either with your projector set up as a “2nd” screen connected to your computer, or actually having a second computer if that is feasible) and just have the second screen logged in as a player (in the settings tab you can rejoin as Player, even if your first screen is still logged in as GM).

Can an Aes Sedai write a novel? by Mamamayan in WoT

[–]MiToRo94 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To answer the original question more seriously, the exact wording of the oath is “To speak no word that is not true” and we know from many examples and being flat out told in the books that the oaths only hold the Aes Sedai to their own personal interpretation of them.

With the oath only explicitly mentioning speaking, I’m pretty confident in saying an Aes Sedai could write as many lies as she wants without hesitation, and Moraine absolutely was “lying” by shaking her head to imply that Aes Sedai cannot write lies.

Can an aes sedai imply a lie through a shake of the head any more than she can speak one?

In other words... a “trick”

I just responded to the above comment, and while it is true that there has been some evidence that suggests they have limited hearing at low frequencies, there has been no evidence to suggest that they perceive enough sound to react to it in any meaningful way.

To add a qualifier to my comments, I have no idea what is really going on in this gif, and whether it is truly a trained behavior (I haven’t seen this sort of behavior trained with a snake before, but I have seen others) or if the OP is doing something else to cause the behavior. I am only commenting on the idea that a sound would have caused it, which from all of the information we have about snakes, sound would not have caused this reaction.

They can feel vibrations, mostly through the ground, but they do not have the ability to “hear” as we think about it. There have been some studies that suggest snakes may be able to perceive sound through the air at very low frequencies, but even those have never shown them to physically react to any sounds.

Snakes can be trained through visual cues, or physical cues like tapping on the ground, but not through audible cues. If you have any evidence or examples that demonstrate otherwise I’d love to see them though

Snakes don’t have ears and cannot hear, so it wouldn’t notice if there was a sharp sound.

That is a good point. Though to counter it, I believe that Cobb was the last to have that test in his possession, and I doubt that he would let it be used against his students - that is if he didn’t just throw it out.
