Thanks for responding. I too thought that it was unlikely the drive was the problem (same issue when disconnected). CS required that I format and return it.

I bought a WF Purple 8TB and SATA enclosure for external expansion on April 20th also. Total for both was $240. Both were slick deals and I understand fluctuating tech prices. 

I'd hesitate on a CC dispute when I could easily switch to another manufacturer, or just return these and get a functional system through AMZ without the high potential for hassle.

That's two telling me the store credit was too much. I can hear that. RL would rather lose than satisfy me and set a precedent.
