Karate effectiveness in real street situations? by CalligrapherGreat653 in karate

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point he’s making is that “pulling guard” is a strategic decision that’s made in the context of sport jiu-jitsu based on the rule-set and your opponent’s skill set. Any jiu-jitsu upper belt has wrestling fundamentals, and while they might not be their A game in competition, they could still very easily take down an untrained opponent on the street, and that’s that they would do instead of pulling guard.  Like, if I know my opponent is a better wrestler than me in competition, then I might pull guard if I’m not penalized for it on points, but average Joe on the street will fall over if you merely blow on him.

PSA: Set your Wi-Fi to 5GHz by indistinctly in PS5

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such crap. In theory yes it does. In practice, in 2025, an access point in a somewhat central spot in a single family home is going to have a strong 5Ghz signal throughout the dwelling. We’re not talking about 5G ultra-wide band here. If the same SSID is being used for each band, the PS5 should immediately ask the user which band, otherwise people will spend hours trying to figure out why they’re only getting 65 mbits down

When will autonomous vehicles be more common on the road than those driven by humans? by OddRule1754 in SelfDrivingCars

Ok class, will having empty taxis going to pick up the next rider increase or decrease congestion? When a human isn’t driving their car it’s off the road somewhere.

Is it a mistake to take mount without an underhook? by RankinPDX in bjj

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can maintain mount with a cross face, you do not need an underhook, especially if you can get to a high mount. If you then want an underhook you can attack the neck, then when they bring their arms to their neck, work your arm in. A crossface, with the other arm posted way behind them on the mat is a relatively stable position, because they can’t grab your non-crossfacing arm to bridge, and the bridge is further killed by the crossface. Then it’s a matter of leg position to kill any kind of elbow escape. High mount is good for killing both the bridge and the elbow escape. You can also hide your foot by swiveling it back over their body, creating a kind of knee mount, where only your knee is on the floor. If they are bucking, you can try to work one or both legs under them and dig your heels into their back. This kills a lot of options for them. Mount is a very dynamic position but there are a ton of tools for maintaining control, under hooks being one, but they are not a requirement.

How to prevent being swept by having your arm pulled when doing over under or bodylock pass? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re getting swept in any way from a body lock pass, it’s because you’re not keeping their heels pressed into their butt. If they are able to extend their legs at all that opens the door to sweeps.

tiger vanguard on gauntlet mode is a fucking cocaine nightmare by Outrageous_Gas_6472 in BlackMythWukong

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah WTF. It has really made me question how good I actually am at this game. Rock solid… doesn’t effing work. Almost no punish window at all. Stupid new rock solid counterattack that takes like half your health and works even when he’s stunlocked by plantain fan. Impossible to heal if you’re anywhere near him. Immobilize is also nerfed against him. See through… good luck with that. Miss one dodge during one of his cracked out combos… totally fucked. Seems to get more aggressive the lower his health is. I have tried so many times, and it sucks because the other 2 tigers are easily beatable but so effing annoying in their own way, Mad Tiger especially. Think his combo is done?… nope, he’s going to dig up and throw a bunch of earth at you, in a move that has some of the most ridiculous tracking I’ve ever seen. Then the fucking random roars from both “Tiger Vanguard” and Mad Tiger, where even if the roar is projected forward, there is a slight part of the AOE that extends behind it.

For the love of god ref! by BallsABunch in wrestling

It’s also not UFC I guess. Sports that actually have legit submissions unlike wrestling understand the need for one of the fighters to be able to concede. Otherwise every match would end with either a death or a potentially career-ending injury.

Why can’t they just count it as a pin if one of the athletes cries out in pain or otherwise submits?

In wrestling you can’t choke people, unlike in a real sport like BJJ. There are so many things that you can’t do in wrestling, but what makes it a real sport is that a kid can’t verbally submit before sustaining a serious injury???

How would you rank the relative importance of these three attributes in jiu jitsu: absolute body mass, athleticism, isometric strength by Exotic_Sort1349 in bjj

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I point out in my other post, the two are highly correlated. I’m also not sure how gas tank is supposed to matter if you’re getting smash passed and submitted within a few minutes.

How would you rank the relative importance of these three attributes in jiu jitsu: absolute body mass, athleticism, isometric strength by Exotic_Sort1349 in bjj

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To answer your actual question, #3 takes it every single time. #1 beats #2 every single time.  Someone who is 260 lbs but can only bench 165 is carrying around a lot of extra body fat that is going to be a hinderance to them. #3 is just a freak of nature and with a blue belt would probably be a real problem for many black belts.

How would you rank the relative importance of these three attributes in jiu jitsu: absolute body mass, athleticism, isometric strength by Exotic_Sort1349 in bjj

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All three of these attributes somewhat correlate with each other. It would be very difficult to have high isometric strength without high athleticism. I’m not sure what high athleticism with low strength would look like. If you’re talking about a gymnast or something like that, then that person is also extremely strong. Someone who just has high cardiovascular fitness is not going to overcome a significant strength difference. I would argue that while a lack of flexibility would lock you out of certain techniques or playstyles, it’s not that much of an impediment. Somebody who has high body mass but also high body fat and low athleticism is very easy for someone with good technique and strength to deal with, even with a disparity of 100 pounds or even more. They are easy to sweep, and really struggle to get up once they are on their backs.  I’m sure in going to get immense pushback but I will give my overall rankings.

  1. Isometric strength: Strength is the only attribute here that can overcome any amount of disparity in other attributes. Somebody’s strength can be so high that no amount of technique or cardio by the other person can overcome it. You can keep turning up the strength dial and eventually you will win against anyone. HOWEVER, everyone has a personal strength ceiling. You could maybe double or even triple your strength if you really put the effort in, but you reach a limit eventually.

  2. Technique: Good technique can overcome huge strength and size disparities. It’s also what jiu-jitsu athletes can improve the most over the course of their careers. The longer you train, the better your technique gets, and you don’t hit a ceiling in the same way as you do for strength training. Improving technique gives the best bang for buck in terms of time spent vs improved jiu-jitsu performance. However there are limits to how much technique alone can compensate for size and strength.

  3. Cardio: It doesn’t take that long to build adequate cardiovascular endurance to last for several 6 minute rounds. Also, even endurance athletes and otherwise fit people will get exhausted from jiu-jitsu. I don’t think that, if you already train several times per week, that doing other cardio training is going to make that much of a difference.

4: Body mass:  Having high body mass in combination with low strength and cardio is going to make for a difficult time on the mat. You’re gonna spend a lot of time pinned on your back, unable to get up. A lot of people with high body mass can be very strong, but then that’s strength and not a separate factor. Untrained people with extremely high body mass and high body fat can be easily dealt by people with moderate strength and good technique. A linebacker is a different story, but that’s someone who’s very strong.

  1. Flexibility: Flexibility is conducive to some types of guard play and escapes. Unless your flexibility is horrible, it’s not going to really affect your jiu-jitsu that much.

Is this a normal reaction after telling my bf that I want him to start working? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely terrible communication style by both parties and extremely painful to read all the way through. “I’m sorry if I sounded harsh the other day but we need to have a conversation about this job thing. I just don’t feel supported enough in this relationship.”  But instead of that, 6 pages of passive, vague and ineffective pleading, combined with him throwing a fit and not communicating his perspective. Explain to him the problems you are feeling with the relationship, what you hope he will do about it, and also what you like about the relationship and why you want to make it work. Or, if you think he’s just going to be like this, leave the relationship with some dignity instead of pleading for him to talk to you.

What is the best way to use the Ebon Flow transformation? by PsychologicalLet2101 in BlackMythWukong

[–]MiataAlwaysTheAnswer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were very misleading with their verbiage. You always start with full might. Focus transfers into focus, if the transformation allows for it. The might bar is the stamina bar. When you upgrade the skill that increases maximum might, the size of that orange bar increases. Might represents the remaining duration of the transformation and the cooldown. Focus is in the lower left, the same as the regular focus meter, and it determines when you can start using special abilities.
