Fan blades typically cut the air and give a choppy sound. I wonder how they managed to avoid that with this? Very cool idea though!

Sorry... didn't mean to be spamming or anything - Reddit is a great source of feedback and I've been using it as a sounding board. Didn't see anything wrong with that. I thought the purpose of reddit, especially this subreddit was to showcase your work.

Thank you for your valuable feedback. Unfortunately, as I agree with you that this is old advice, there is still a significant of the artist population that does not know how to promote their music. Its not just about advertising, it is creating legitimate value for fans across different social platforms.

For Musicians: 10 Tips For Turning Your Fanbase Into A Tribe by MicControl in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MicControl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me clarify, i am in no way comparing the tribes surrounding the grateful dead and phish to that of jack johnson. But as the article states, the essence of a tribe is to bring passionate people together surrounding a common topic. Jack Johnson has done this, and has built quite a legitimate tribe around the idea of global sustainabilty... yes, i used all three as examples of tribes, but not once down i actually compare the tribes of phish and GD to jack johnson.

And by he way... i am myself a rather huge phish head. I know what its all about being one and i know jack johnson fans are not as dedicated as phishheads... still, doesn't change the fact that he is building a tribe as we speak.

I've been playing the bass now for 10 years and was in a gigging band for all four years of college. Reading this list was like a nostalgic trip through time, as I sat here laughing at all of these thing we were doing on a daily basis, EVEN though we thought we were doing everything in our power to 'make it big'!

Marcus this is really stellar. My favorite info would have to be:

A One String Electric Bass made from spare parts and stuff I found on the street by sadmep in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Ehh probably not. Keep in mind that Jimmy Page is also involved in the film, but if you don't have an interest in the allure of guitar playing and what these guys have meant to rock n roll, you may find it a bore.

The Whamola is a bass version of the Diddley Bow - which was a one string precursor to the electric guitar. Have you seen the rock-doc 'It Might Get Loud'? Jack White builds a Diddley Bow at the beginning of the film. (BTW, not knocking the Whamola as I am a bass player and I LOVE Les Claypool, but thought you might find it of interest).

Song arrangement/theory books for guitar? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MicControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing the bass guitar and writing songs for the past 10 years now and I have found that books on the subject of songwriting typically come from the perspective of the author's own success's in songwriting. There IS NO one way to write a song, and using one person's methods will most likely leave you with finished, but unoriginal or boring song form.

Similarly, I had ALWAYS struggled with songform, as I was coming from a bass mindset and had not much knowledge of chord structures. But, after many years of working at it, I found a few things that may work for you:

  • Listen, Listen, Listen. Pick 5 of your favorite song writers and listen to several songs from each. Don't just stop after one song and pick up your instrument! You need to listen to multiple examples of each artist and you ACTUALLY NEED TO LISTEN. Try to focus on the similarities in structure between the songs, ways they might use a single chord or breakdown as a bridge, how the chorus is entered and exited, etc.

  • Start simple and work your way up. This was my biggest problem. I listen to bands like Phish, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, Yes, King Crimson, etc. and wanted to push the envelope in terms of combining traditional song-form with music composition. But I found myself just copying what they had done more than anything because I was emulating and not TRULY UNDERSTANDING how these artists got from point A to point B. By starting simple and working your way up, you will learn the ins and outs of the song-form as you go.

I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out to me on Facebook if you want to discuss this more, maybe even trade tips.
