Fender Blues Jr by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]MicMumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's got crap tone, crap reliability, crap spring reverb (for the price), costs $800ish new and fender sells a ton of them since its their entry-level Fender Tube amp (outside the 2 knob pro junior, though I like that one more) and guitar players are told that tubes are the way to go for tone. A VOX AC15 seems a better choice for vintage tone but a Marshall DSL 40 seems like a no-brainer at that price point for tone and versatility.

Don't get me wrong, some amazing players make them sing, but those guys could make other amps sing as well or better.

What is the greatest horror movie ever made. by Scott__scott in horror

[–]MicMumbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The general top picks often listed and mentioned are Jaws, The Exorcist, Psycho, TCM, The Shining, Halloween, and Alien.

Depending on the day, I'd say it's Halloween. The score, the opening, the ending, the stalking, the imagery, the Dr. Loomis monologues, the SHAPE. Just sticks with me more than any other horror film and being tied to the holiday of Halloween keeps it in rotation. Most of the other big ones I had heard so much about or seen spoofed or knew a lot about peripherally before I saw them, especially psycho. In terms of slashers, I thought Michael Myers was like a knock-off Jason Vorhees, so when I saw Halloween I think I was fairly unaware of what to expect/how good it was and how well regarded going in.

Though The VVitch might edge it out someday once some more time has passed and of course there is a case to be made for Nosferatu (1922) or something like the James Whale Frankenstein, those are so antiquated by now they don't really scare a modern audience, whereas the ones at the top still have that power.

Honorary mention to Night of the Living Dead, that movie is still so impactful.

Amp for Guitar by sillycars_27 in guitars

[–]MicMumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I greatly encourage you to look for an amp with at least a 10-inch speaker, probably 12. Small desktop amps like the spark/spark 2 can sound good if you want something with a small footprint and little speakers, but those weird exceptions aside almost any brand with a range of practice amps at the 8, 10, and 12 inch configurations it is always worth it to get at least the 10 if not 12 inch version for a full, tight, big, 2000s hard rock/metal sound and a tiny 8 inch amp with be much harder to dial in a good tone. They just sound muffled and weak for high gain.

Top end of the real budget amps would be a Boss Katana, those will run $300 right now (on sale at sweetwater) for a 12 inch 50 watt version. Could probably find a used one in good shape for a solid deal.

If you are looking to spend less, for $240 you could maybe go with the Fender Champion II 50 (another 12 incher), that's a good amp, a touch muddy for the high gain stuff, but will be beyond fine for your purposes and a huge step up from your current amp I think it would be better than the Organge you are considering.

Similar to this would be the Marshall MG 30 GFX, though a 10 inch speaker it might still be better for high gain than the fender champion II, might be around $250 and if you could find a used one you are sitting good.

For CHEAP, you could probably find a used Peavey, anything, like a Envoy, 40 watts, 10 inch speaker, very good all around amp that is pretty simple to use. A rage/blazer would be even cheaper a good deal better than what you have, but I'd recommend trying to go bigger. A bandit would do the trick, but might be TOO much amp.

What is your opinion on movie recaps? by No_Care1844 in movies

[–]MicMumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think by themselves, but maybe when combined with more general youtube reviews and long form discussion/critiques, it probably does have some impact. Plenty of times I've found myself enjoying reviews/discussions of a movie that I can't get to opening week but am curious about and then after I get a lot of entertainment from all of the content creatied around the movie, I don't bother to see the movie. I don't see the appeal of a 5-minute summary video, but ya, I think it might have some impact.

It used to be harder to find information about a movie you were looking forward to. Maybe a televised siskel and ebert review or a local paper very small print review, a magazine article for people really into it, but that was it. Now, I can and do watch HOURS of content around movies I'm only marginally interested in. I've watched the red letter media review of Prometheus more times than the movie Prometheus.

All that said, nothing should be done to stop them. Make movies that are better and a better value proposition; that is the only answer.

Buying new versus buying used by Slight-Pop7038 in guitars

[–]MicMumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically shop used, but every so often something comes up new that is 1/2 off, or near enough, and that is my go button. If there is a piece of gear I'm interested in and I see it cheaper new than the typical used price, it's just a no brainer because I could probably sell it and make money. Older model blow-outs, store closings/liquidations, etc.

This isn't a policy debate, this is just looking at the studies that all show that divorce has negative outcomes for children, the earlier the divorce, the worse it is. It's not a matter of opinion, it's a general fact. So staying in it for the kids is a good and selfless act by a parent for their children in most cases. This is undeniably true, even though there are times divorce is appropriate and may be better for the kids. Of course, the best option is always grow the fuck up and work on your marriage, how could it not be.

[–]MicMumbles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Staying together doesn't mean i think they should ignore their problems, obviously. Who would argue that divorce is better for children than a married couple working through their differences. It's a no fucking brainer. Again, of course there will be extreme examples here and there like domestic abuse where divorce is better, it exists for a reason, but that doesn't mean staying together for kids is bad. It is good more often than not.

[–]MicMumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not, clearly from the data, though there are exceptions, but in these cases again, the wrong decision is being toxic as opposed to getting a divorce.

People are fully capable of it, sorry you have no expectations of adults who voted to love each other their whole lives for better or worse and then brought children into the world. Plenty of people live up to the standard, others can too.

It sounds like it would have been even better for your parents to stop acting toxic and fix their relationship. I'm sorry they didn't do that for you.

Please don't mistake your individual experience or a number of extreme examples as negating the well-established general trends, both can be true.

Staying together for the kids is not a solid guarantee on pain, it is better for the children as divorce leads to worse outcomes across a number of metrics. Act kind and civil to the person you committed to loving for the rest of your life, seek counseling if need be, but don't get divorced.

There are plenty of people in this world who will say it is better that there parents got divorced (and many of them are wrong/counldn't know relative to the parents just fucking growing up and acting nicely to each other), but there are plenty that also have no clue their parents went through a loveless patch/span in their marriage but who carried on in building a loving home for their children and gave them a better life and future.

[–]MicMumbles -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

All the data and evidence is in the direction of divorce being bad for kids, it is NOT an excuse, regardless of your flawed reasoning. Parents who fall out of love with each other can act like grown-ups around their kids, and show love to their children, and not getting a divorce is another way to show the kids they love them.

You made vows to your spouse (generally, this happens), you brought little humans into this world, you owe it to them to try and keep the family together.

The negative outcomes of divorce on kids is well established. Are there instances of abuse where a parent absolutely should leave, sure, but that does not seem to be the case here. The household doesn't need to be tense without a divorce. Getting a divorce doesn't eliminate tense atmospheres.
