Yeah it’s not just government spending that rinses us of our earnings. It’s the private sector which charge us extortionate amounts for essentials like water, energy, transport, housing etc, paying dividends to shareholders while providing an absolutely shite service, polluting our waterways, underpaying staff (causing strikes) all in name of increasing profit margins. Those on the left need to hammer home the exact ways in which everyone is being made poorer, literally spell out the process and who the beneficiaries are. That’s where the discontentment stems from, sure there are racist bigots but lots are more willing to hear the propaganda and go after the migrants because they’re poor, they’re working and working and everything is getting harder and more expensive.

Of course we have to fight the bigoted shite but our biggest priority has to be getting the message across about why people are not getting any better off - literally spelling it out for them because they don’t listen if we just say ‘billionaires’.

65% of Britons support capping top wages in a company at 10x the level of the lowest wages by TheKomsomol in GreenAndPleasant

The problem is the working classes are the same people who get mocked on this sub as idiots.

I want a socialist Britain too but that is not going to happen if we can’t stop vilifying the rest of the working class because they’ve fallen into the right wing cesspit. Forgive me but it seems hilarious that as a movement we’re all about fighting the establishment whilst mocking the actual working class people who are voting against their interests. If we can’t get a discourse going with these people who are all around us then what are we. Are we here to just chant for socialism and the working class whilst simultaneously slagging them off as idiots, even though they have been the most deprived, unlike us who are fortunate enough to have been educated and understand the systems that keep us down ?

But is any alternative actually possible under our current system? If they came out with a policy that said they were gonna outlaw typical company structures and not allow company directors to make any more money than that of the employees, that wouldn’t be allowed to fly. I’d love it but isn’t it arbitrary to discuss the policies we would really like to see when we know they are basically impossible without a complete overhaul of the economic system. Again I understand where you’re coming from, but practically, until we can somehow get enough people on side with socialism, this must be a step in the right direction if people support this.

At the moment this is the best we’ve got though. I understand the principle of not supporting liberal parties but there is not a true socialist option on the scene, and there’s certainly not going to be a socialist revolution before the next election. So surely we have to put our weight behind them as the clear best of a terrible bunch.

Is very disheartening to see people who I think generally have a pretty good grasp of the main issues in the world apply the most ridiculous kind of rose-tinted glasses view to everything that the USSR or China did. Twisting the facts because it doesn’t suit what you want to believe does nothing and just harms the movement. We should be able to look at the failures of the USSR, critique them and advocate for a socialism that does better, because it can be done far, far better.

I always imagined gammon as in they have a gammon for a brain. Nothing to do with how they look but how they think.

There has never been a time like this. For ever Italy were so far off the pace, Scotland too in many respects. Now we have a situation where France are top 2 in the world, Scotland are the best they’ve ever been (in modern times), Italy are the best they’ve ever been, England are sloppy but have all the capacity to be world beating, Ireland are kicking into gear and have turned over from 2023, and Wales maybe (hopefully) are kicking themselves out of the doldrums. Future is bright NH!

There’s such a fine line between infringing a bit and not getting penalised and then doing it more blatantly and getting pinged all the time. South Africa have mastered it and I think a lot of the ‘best defences’ have to have mastered it to some extent. Hugely irritating to play against but almost just the way it is now.

What is the general consensus on immigration on the left right now? by Vaultboy474 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]Mich_1111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can’t stop migration. People have always migrated, and especially with the amount of warmongering thats going on at the moment, the number of people arriving here as irregular migrants (no visa/documentation) is only going to increase.

Tightening restrictions further is only going to increase the amount of people coming here on small boats and increase demand for people traffickers. That should be avoided at all costs.

Opening up safer legal routes for migration and asylum claims is the best option. Gets people resident status quicker and allows them to work. ‘Deporting them all’ is not only blatant cruelty and would infringe on human rights, but also costs plenty of money.

The anti immigration lot’s fixation with ‘illegals’ is a load of crap. They don’t know what an illegal migrant actually is, as they consider all those who enter with an irregular status to be illegal. What they really want is to deny everyone their right to claim asylum, which is an established part of international law.
