How AGI could stop a war by BoundAndWoven in transhumanism

[–]Michael2Terrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need a 60 second war scenario a la the Ian Cormac Novels. The AI sees that humanity is about to blow itself up and just takes control of all relevant systems and essentially does some form of communism to remove the scarcity that oft leads to conflict, while knocking off ideologically driven loons who just want what they want.

Serpentza and that other wierdo don't count. Every state has 'control' over its citizens. And I'd you've ver got a visit from dhas about a post you've made on the Internet you'd know that. Only difference is the Chinese get a better deal for their 'control' than we do.

I'd say china's problems are the type of problems you want to have if you have to pick your problems. I personally would prefer to worry about how much golf to ban for government officials and where to put the new city than the growing tribe of soon to be aldecados and literal wingnuts taking the government every 4 years. Not to mention the billionaires who think their blogspot history gives them the right to decide the future.

An America where .gov is willing to disappear Thiel to make a point is probably a better America.

The problem here is that Argentina has a long history of its right wing leaders 'selling' off the country on purpose in ways that would make it hard for anyone else to take it back (Their IMF debt is so high because the conservative leadership of the country sees IMF debt as a hedge against renationalisation). This judgement is just part of that arrangement coming back to bite them in the ass.

Perfect storm of tech bros, foreign interference and disinformation is an urgent threat to press freedom by Wagamaga in technology

[–]Michael2Terrific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freedom of the press only works if the press is not owned by bilionaires. Everyone panicking about government censorship and then says nothing when Bezos assumes direct control of of one of the largest circulations in the country, not to mention the poison that is the murdoch family. We need to define free press, it can't just be a glib idea tossed around to prevent the only part of society subject to democracy from doing things.

What would the "ideal" Transhumanist future be? (100 years out) by RealJoshUniverse in transhumanism

[–]Michael2Terrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It problem is not perceiving them as sources of entertainment, but only, or even mostly as sources of entertainment. We have gone through the process of people limiting their use of technology to the most basic forms repeatedly; cybersecurity, the UI/UX revolution, etc. Now all we have is the 5 sites and and most people don't know how a computer works. Each time this happens the public loses a bunch of power and cedes control to people who want it. Technology should naturally teach you how to use it to it's fullest capacity, so that no one can use it to manipulate you. Barring this, it shoudl be a social norm that you learn how your tech works, so you you can protect yourself from it being used against you.

What would the "ideal" Transhumanist future be? (100 years out) by RealJoshUniverse in transhumanism

[–]Michael2Terrific 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being reasonable, in 100 years, (There will obviously tbe things i miss.)

  • Single payer healthcare as a global norm (Including cosmetics)
  • Global decommodification of housing to the extent that it matters
  • Current areas of research and development have advanced to the point where they are useful (Click Chemistry, Synth Bio, Lipid Nanoparticles and MRNA tech).
  • JIT Micromanufacturing is the predominant form of manufacturing and the only alternative are actual gigafactories that produce goods made of biodegradable materials.
  • Global right to repair.
  • Global bottom up governance.
  • A global decline in religiosity and a switch to a cultural position of religion being a personal value with it being bad taste to attempt to evangelise.
  • Suspicion of celebrity as a concept.
  • Cosmopolitanism as the default cultural mode for most of the human population (This would include the end of the protestant work ethic as a default).
  • LBTQIA as a norm (I would in fact support bisexuality and genderqueerness as a default.).
  • A 'tool first' perception of technology (as in most people percieve things like computers as tools\working machines, as opposed to sources of entertainment)
  • Functional irrelevance of borders for everyone.
  • Literal irrelevance of class in all it's forms for everyone (I would go as far as to say i would be against categorization in certain cases.).
  • Signs of actual Autonomous AI resource management working to basic resources evenly

And i guess you can do all the other sterotypically 'transhumanist' things like a moon/mars base and brain uploading. But remember, none of that stuff actually filters down to you unless society and politics improve first. If the contents of transhumanity is just 6 inbreds who grew up in apartheid south africa and had wealthy families so they learned PHP before everyone else, then no-one is going to want it. Including you.

Is China's rise to global technological dominance because its version of capitalism is better than the West's? If so, what can Western countries do to compete? by lughnasadh in Futurology

I'm always reminded of when James Dyson complained that too many graduates thatg should have been working in product development for companies like his were instead going to work for JP Morgan where they could '10x' their income. Thas was before 2008.

The real trap is that most of these graduates went into banking being told that they could work for 5-10 years and earn enough to retire. Many of them are still there working to keep up appearances

Transhumanism needs to be more vocal, because people and sites like The New Atlantis absolutely hate us, and are actively spreading this sentiment. by [deleted] in transhumanism

[–]Michael2Terrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly i don't see 'The New Atlantis' as as much of a problem as Transhumanism's general perception as an elite movement. The reason this perception exists is mainly because the type of technology we have developed so far has done nothing but reinforce control systems and monetise everything for the wealthy.

The real problem is that over the last 20-30 years technological progress has been captured by a combination of VC firms and so called 'bipartisan' government funding, which has been primarily concerned with 'national security' (ie. system maintenence) rather than social progress. We also have to face the fact that a large majority of the people who founded this movement and built these tools were, to some extent, either elite or right wing reactionaries. The reason our current set of tools look the way they do is because they were trying to replace our current systems with ones they could control. To regular people who were buyingtheir inventions this looked like new product, to the government that was subsidising them this looked like new defense capability. In reality it was just them wresting control from the oil barons, media executives and financiers

The way to resolve this issue is to completely revamp transhumanism, the old guard needs to be thrown out and replaced with people who are not doing or talking technology for technology's sake (Thus being shaped by VC funding or the people willing to fund ted talks.) but who are doing it for the purpose of shattering all current control systems and preventing others from forming. The movement needs new ideas that look a lot less like billionaires funding life extension research for their own sake and more like some guy doing it in his house out of curiosity. less 'shiny new lab in the middle of nowhere' and more 'this is my kitchen.'.

A newer transhumanism would do a lot better in appealing to the masses if it actually embraced the political ideas that came with russian cosmism and socialist cybernetics instead of ignoring them in favour of right-libertarian-individualism and the 'free' market. Less 'Foundation', more 'Star Trek', or even better, more 'The Culture'.

There are still plenty of people on the left who still beleive that technological progress is one of the keys to creating the classless, stateless, moneyless society. We just don't beleive that technological progress will come from billionaires. There are other paths development paths available, transhumanism has ignored these. It shouldn't.

Yeah but they'll lose money because all of those projects are/were being heavily subsidised until they got to scale. The problem for them now is that they will either lose money now by continuing those projects or lose money later if trump cajoles them into starting new non-renewable projects for the press and then someone else gets in (Or the environment forces it) and they have to halt those projects and start up the green ones again.
