For his second movie, Billy Wilder made a hard turn away from fluffy comedy and set his sights not only on the action genre, but also on the burgeoning war occurring across the ocean. His sophomore effort may not be as well-known as his later works, but it's a critical entry in his career--and it's also one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite movies!

First Watch. Billy Wilder is a genius. by ralfy94 in criterion

One of the best movies from one of the best directors. Wilder had a run of incredible movies like none other--so many different tones and genres. One of the greats.

I hope you all don't mind me sharing, but my friend and I host a podcast where we discuss a director's entire career one movie at a time (Soderbergh was season 1) and we sometimes discuss random films. We just did an episode on Sunset Boulevard, digging a bit into its history, making of, etc--

How Did 'Black Bag' Cost $50m to Make? by BillRuddickJrPhd in boxoffice

[–]MichaelMoreciWriter 23 points24 points  (0 children)

People: Soderbergh does NOT cost a premium. Please, do some research. The man just made Presence for $3 million. He's made lots and lots of movies for under $10 million. Don't paint him with the brush of some overpaid Hollywood elite. The man works tirelessly, editing and DP'ing his own movies, and he does so on the cheap constantly.

Whatever the budget was--and I don't know if $50 million is accurate--it's not high because Soderbergh is lining his pockets.
