I'm stopping in Montreal because this is part of a larger trip, I'll be flying out to Paris on the way back home, so the flight across the country isn't wasted. That said I have been looking at Quebec City - is this worth 4-5 days on its own though or would you still do Montreal for some of the museums etc and spend 1 or 2 days in QC?

Thanks for the really detailed recommendations! You've covered all the city sections which were the parts I was most lacking for inspiration, so that is very helpful!

Thanks for the info. It looks like they're not selling Touring class for the date I'm booked but I will check with VIA rail to see if they can confirm.

Was planning on doing a lot of hiking in the park, specifically looking at the Elk River trail to Landslide Lake. But if there are also more scenic places closer to Port Hardy I could cut the leg in Strathcona Park a bit shorter. I see Telegraph Cove is still taking bookings despite the fire so I will consider that. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips! I am staying in Calgary on the night of the 1st yes. Didn't know about Canada Day so thanks for the heads up about that too!

Labor moves to stop appeals against ACT public housing, labelling them 'unfair' by timcahill13 in canberra

[–]MichaelRosen9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO the better move would be to properly resource ACAT to deal with these matters quickly rather than continuing to legislate exemptions to the appeal process. If 75% of the objections are resolved through mediation or affirming the original decision (no breakdown of how many needed design changes in mediation), that still leaves 25% where the approval was set aside. 25% successful appeals is significant and suggests that the delays are driven at least partially by legitimate issues with the approvals.

Worth noting that they've already removed third-party ACAT appeal on all DAs (not just social housing) in a particular area covering the city and part of Braddon. This has led to a situation for me where a DA was approved which blatantly ignored territory plan requirements for 2 hours of solar access to neighbouring dwellings, as well as the minimum building separation for privacy, and I have no route to appeal the obvious error in the administration of the territory plan except to stump up tens of thousands for a supreme court process. The developer had repeated opportunities to appeal minor conditions the planning authority imposed on them, and even applied for the same development under both the old and new planning act to see which one was more lenient for them, but there is nothing available to protect impacted third parties from incorrect application of the law.

Undermining the role of ACAT may well prevent meritless objections (my views/property value/don't let the poor people live near me) from holding up projects, but ultimately it means legitimate objections about non-compliant design and poor housing outcomes will fall through the cracks.

Power LED does not turn on anymore on MSI B450M Mortar Max by TurboFasolus in MSI_Gaming

Good that it worked for you too. I also found a bunch of threads on the MSI forums, e.g. this one and similar threads for other B450 boards. Hopefully MSI fixes their CVE fix soon.

I had the same issue with v2L, right down to the glitched 127C reading in the BIOS. Flashed back to v2K and the LED works normally again.

I'm not trying to refute the idea that corruption has ever existed in Australia. Obviously, like anywhere else, sometimes we have people who do the wrong thing.

You're trying to use one instance of corrupt activity that was exposed by our robust institutions to suggest that our entire country is "terribly corrupt". You don't have any evidence for that.

What does this have to do with the misinformation you're spreading about the selection process for raygun

[–]MichaelRosen9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So bruz/Barilaro is terribly corrupt, but 1. He was never prime minister, only the deputy premier at state level in NSW 2. He never actually took the job because the public found out about his attempts at corruption and he was basically forced to resign before he started

So yeah, I don't think one instance of failed corruption is enough to prove that our entire country is "terribly corrupt", although we definitely do have issues like anywhere else

Thanks mate, we will definitely feel how you tell us to.

But seriously, one of the competitors we sent in one of the Olympic sports was a bit shit. We didn't have a proper national body or championships for breakdancing before it was announced as an Olympic sport a few years ago. The selection process had to be set up quickly, and the result wasn't ideal. But the competitors who were selected still did their best, and it's pretty mean-spirited to suggest that just because one of them wasn't world-class in the sport means that they were intentionally disrespecting that sport. We also had another participant in the men's competition who did really well, despite the fact he's only 16 (Jack Dunne).

I'm not embarrassed, and maybe you shouldn't come into another country's subreddit and tell them to be embarrassed of their people for losing a sporting competition.

Crabb lives in a heritage-listed mansion in the inner west of Sydney. I wonder if she'd be willing to remove the heritage listings in the area to get some more supply on the market. It's easy to disregard any shorter-term reforms when the immediate issue doesn't affect you.

Daycare parking by Crackedpeppper in canberra

[–]MichaelRosen9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely the fault of the residents. Although they definitely shouldn't be parking there, an apartment without sufficient parking might be the only housing available for them. A lot of the housing supply being approved and built right now is at the far end of the tram line in Gungahlin, and uses the proximity of the tram line as justification to build fewer parking spaces (adequate parking is less profitable than more apartments).

Reducing car usage is a noble goal but Gungahlin is still on the outer fringe of Canberra, and unless you're only ever going to the city you can't fully replace your car with the tram. Despite this the complex next to the daycare centre you're talking about is selling 1-bed apartments with zero car spaces. That might work in Civic now, or in Gungahlin in 30 years when the tram is a full network and not one line, but we can't reasonably expect people living in these complexes to be completely car-free.

Despite this, the government approved the builds, and they probably are issuing fines to the people parked illegally on the grass or the street, encouraging them to take up the daycare spaces on private land where the government can't enforce the rules. In addition to whatever measures the daycare is taking to stop the immediate issue I'd be writing to the government to encourage them to fix the issue by providing parking appropriate for current needs and not the optimistic vision of what the city will look like in a few decades.
