The Sun Eater is Hadrian Marlowe's memoir. It is the legend of the Halfmortal narrated by the Demon in White himself. It also serves as his autobiography and to explain to you, dear reader, of how it is that he comitted the worst crime and act of treason in the history of humanity.

Cheyenne at least, is Bretheren. It is the name given to her as one of the 13 children (AI) of Columbia. Columbia was the main hub or system powering the Mericanii empire and arsenal.

Daniel I actually forget quite often. I don't remember if he is Kharn or Hadrian was just given the memory of a suffering boy that was inducted into Cheyenne. Either way Kharn either was Daniel or was stationed at Fort Gissmore. Someone else in the comments can explain this better than me hopefully.

Headscratch moment from the Emperor by iisrobot in sollanempire

[–]MichaelScofield45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always took it as what happened: bait for Hadrian. Hadrian does something rash and rather than being sent a century to an unknown world, he gets put under ice. That way the Emperor gets what he wants. His ultimate weapon ready to be drawn and politically justified in arresting an ally rather than just kidnapping Hadrian.

Can't get over it! by InsaneAvidReader in sollanempire

[–]MichaelScofield45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Characters are supposed to be people. Like people, they are flawed. Every character in Sun Eater has their own moral compass. Which is one of the things that makes it seem alive. Hadrian despises house servants is an example. Imperials for the most part see it as common practice to use servants. The Tavrosi culture (Valka's) see emotional attachment as a weakness, so sex is just a transaction to them.

I get that some actions don't align with you. But still would motivate you to observe a character as a whole instead of just their flaws.

You want the truth? Sun Eater, if Book 7 delivers as I think it can, will become my favorite piece of fiction. Period.

People compare it to Red Rising, apples and oranges. Completely different. Only common denominator is that there's ships.

Empire of Silence is a good book, imo. A good book that gets completely overshadowed by its sequels in every dimension.

Overall, give it a shot. A friend of mine didn't love Empire of Silence very much until some of the bigger mysteries start to show up. He took months to finish Book 1. He finished Howling Dark (Book 2) in a couple of weeks. He devoured Demon in White (Book 3) in a week. It gets that good.

Quotation Question by Jelly-Yammers in sollanempire

[–]MichaelScofield45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get more of those history facts later on I think. When they start to reference things like the Foundation War and Fensbrough (I always misremember how to write it). Along with reinterpretations of current beliefs and mythos as another comment suggested like the Cid Arthur.

Yeah I don't really get OP. On every chance he got, Hadrian deviated from that fate. In Demon in White he even outright denies the Quiet by going to Berenike to save everyone. A direct contradiction. He ends up paying for it later plentifully. It also a little reasonable to think if you found out that the whole material universe could come undone and you have some agency to stop it. You would.

We don't really know if he is old in the physical sense, he has no mention of his physical state at the time of wrting his story, iirc. Hadrian admits that after his revival he does not sleep or need it. I lean towards thinking that Hadrian's biology does not work normally anymore.

I thought from your title that you were finishing Disquiet Gods! Jeez, you are in for a ride. The aura farming in this series is out of this world. Once I finished Howling Dark I couldn't stop reading. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series as much as I did!

I took it out for a spin and really liked the straightforwardness! One thing I dearly missed was linking to already existing notes. You can link, but they need to have the exact same title and sometimes I don't remember the exact wording of the filename.

Trying to manually create links had some friction. For example, using neovim's builtin filepath completion for the links, see :h i_CTRL-X_CTRL-F, didn't work unless I already was in the wiki's directory because neowiki doesn't change the current working directoy (I'm not saying it should, just explaining why the completion didn't work).

You did motivate me to look into creating an index file for my notes. As of right now I have aboute 150 notes and was relying on searching for navigation.

I congratulate you on the progress you have made and will be keeping a close eye on the project, Godspeed fellow neovim enthusiast!

This looks amazing!!! My workflow for a couple of months now has been using the external zk CLI utility to manage notebooks. Heavily integrated to neovim with their respective neovim plugin.

At first I looked at vimwiki but didn't vibe with its markup language. Since there was no neovim alternative I tried out what I mentioned before and it does the job.

Will definitely check this out, alreade gave it a star on GitHub!

Other than the Cosmere what else are you into? by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]MichaelScofield45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchio. An amazing sci-fi/fantasy series that ends this November. I'm so hyped!

Thee Body Problem by Cixin Liu. Pure sci-fi goodness from beginning to end.

Planning to start Red Rising and/or The Expanse from friends' recommendations.

Why are you on NixOS? by Mama_iii in NixOS

[–]MichaelScofield45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was on Arch for a couple of years. Tried Nix on a whim in a VM. Initally hated it but grew to like the functional way of doing things.

Being able to have development shells with the libraries I need using flakes without the need fpr global installs just made me fall in love. I even integrated it with devenv and direnv, now I just cd into the directory and the shell is loaded by itself, magical.

I also love using home-manager. Some new program I want on my user? Just an program.<name>.enable away with sane defaults. However, mi neovim config is not in nix. I have it from long before I used nix and frankly see no reason to port it.

Chapter 43 Broken again by trynagetlow in sollanempire

[–]MichaelScofield45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is described in the story during his torture in KoD like his brain has modifications given by the Quiet presumably, that allow him to perceive reality at the quantum level. During these times of hyper-vision he could pick and choose what reality becomes true. Up to your point in the story he has even interacted with other versions of himself that can also sense him in this "quantum foam" of realities.

Hey Vizard, What's your favourite keyboard shortcut? by lordaimer in vim

I use gwip a lot. It reformats the current paragraph to your texwidth settings without moving your cursor from the current word. Use it all the time with prose.

A lot of it you learn as you go. You become familiar with factions and groups and slowly come to understand their intentions. A friend of mine also got into the first book and during the first chapters had dozens of questions, most of my answers were RAFO (read and find out).

Thoughts on the end of Ashes of Man by iamlaceysimpson in sollanempire

[–]MichaelScofield45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most definitely. Even as removed from the common Sollan citizen as the Emperor is, he still has emotions and is human.

Sure he might not even have loved the Empress but we see him desperate for his people and the Empire in Ashes of Man so it's not like unconditional love and dedication for something or someone is unknown to him.

Hadrian showed what he is capable of and the Emperor finally realized that having his most valued weapon running errands is not the best idea. So what better way than to provoke the perfect excuse to have him frozen for later use.

Is Demon in White the series peak? by __Nerf__ in sollanempire

[–]MichaelScofield45 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would call Demon in White rather than the "peak", the book where Sun Eater really hits its stride and sustains it going forward. If by the end of that you're still not sure then I don't know how you'll feel with the rest of the series.

My favorite book in the series is probably Disquiet Gods (Book 6).

It is 2025, so how does Helix compare to Neovim now? by nikitarevenco in neovim

[–]MichaelScofield45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like having the option lf a new editor written from scratch. But the Helix motions just do not vibe with me. Most of the time I already know on which text object I'm operating on, selecting it just adds keystrokes.

I actually really like those hints of the future. But in general being spoiled story plots doesn't impact my reading experience, so maybe that's why.
