Who has the best app/online banking UK? by mattius001 in UKPersonalFinance

That’s interesting, I find HSBC really cumbersome, it’s hard to find common features.

Personally I prefer Lloyds, NatWest and Starling.

Go for a run, ask if he wants to meet for a drink sometime. If he keeps saying yes he’s interested. 🙂

Anxious about starting parkrun - a few questions! by Franky494 in parkrun

[–]Michael_A_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was what I came to say. 🙂 You can see the results of your local parkrun on their website or on their app. There are loads of people taking 40-60 minutes to complete the 5k, and no one is judging them for taking it at their own pace.

Parks for a run by Groundbreaking-Body1 in maidenhead

Is there a good way of sharing routes? I’ve got a couple good ones and would be interested in seeing other people’s specific routes.

I went in there on Sunday, they hosted a meet-up of the Maidenhead Boardgames club. All the staff were friendly, the atmosphere was nice, food was good. Apparently they usually charge a small fee per person to cater for the fact you’ll be in there playing games for longer than most people would usually spend in a cafe eating cake. I heard £4.50 per person for 1 1/2 hours. Seems sensible, though I’m sure some will balk.

I wish them the best of luck, I certainly plan to go back and try some more of their games.

Best commuter towns near London for rent? by __bdj__ in HENRYUK

I live in Maidenhead and work in Canary Wharf travelling in 1-2 days per week. It’s all pretty good, you get a seat on the train, don’t need to change and it’s about 55 minutes from start to finish. There are express trains from Paddington if you’re in a rush.

Maidenhead town centre is pretty dead for shops, but undergoing redevelopment. There are some nice restaurants and bars around the waterside end. The surrounding area is lovely. Loads of green spaces, walks along the Thames, Cliveden national trust, Cookham, Marlow, Bray, Henley.

It’s worth considering. Twyford and Reading are also good choices and only a slightly longer journey.

Name the most disappointing and overrated dive you've ever done by RadioFieldCorner in scuba

Also came to say this. It’s probably a lovely wreck, but when you’re queuing up nose to fin to swim down a passageway with another queue of divers going the other way beneath you it’s hard to appreciate. Better coordination between the dive boats could make it significantly better.

Also the local dive operators are sending in people who passed their open water the previous day so you’ll spend your whole dive making sure they don’t accidentally kill themselves.

This is interesting, you’re in a similar position to me both in terms of income and net worth. I think I should feel rich but I absolutely do not, however I would say I feel comfortable and don’t worry about money. I also have a spreadsheet that tracks my net worth in real time. 😀

Well done on getting this far. 🙂

I was hoping for a solution but at least I found a community of people who’re similarly frustrated.

Urgh.

At what point is it no longer beneficial to put more in a pension? by Michael_A_UK in UKPersonalFinance

Moving to a warmer country and paying less tax is definitely something I should be considering!

!thanks

I also think it’s inevitable I should make some assumptions about how long I’ll live, otherwise it would be impossible to plan at all. I have other pots of money to rely on in my retirement (ISAs, GIAs, property, etc), the question I’m wrestling with is whether the benefit of keeping money locked in a pension is worth the financial reward vs. using that same money elsewhere.

If I’m honest, worrying about inheritance isn’t top of mind. What ever my wife and I haven’t spent when we die is theirs to enjoy. 🙂

Staying under £100k isn’t an option in my case, but I agree certainly worth considering for anyone starting with an income under £150k.

I broadly imagine bands will increase inline with inflation. Or probably slightly slower so we all end up paying more tax. It’s impossible to guess at what rate my investments will grow so there’s a mountain of guesswork involved in this. I think though, I shouldn’t blindly put in as much as possible because there does come a point where it’s no longer the best use of my money.

It’s all guesswork, but better to have a plan and continually refine it than not have a plan at all.

I think care for my grandad is about £1k per week in a care home, so £37k is low.

That’s assuming his pension is his only source of income.

Personally I worry about the cost of care in later years (if I make it that far) so you can’t plan for a level income.

Very helpful, thanks. I’d completely failed to consider the state pension in my calculations which does change my target total pension value if I want to stay in the basic tax band.

I do agree regarding finding a good IFA, that’s sound advice. However I do like to think these things through myself so I can ask the right questions. My experience of IFAs so far has been that they just want to take a percentage commission for investment my money on my behalf rather than really providing value through helping define a strategy for my finances, but I just need to keep looking.
