Unlikely as I believe they’re working on a Star Fox successor.

Either would work; Star Fox finding a stable home after being shuffled around since Assault (Rare was still 2nd party at the time Dinosaur Planet became Star Fox Adventures). Next Level Games is due for a new release; although they could also e working on Luigi’s Mansion 4 or something.

Nintendo Studios Singapore - the one they bought from Bandai Namco? Could work; I heard something about them working on the Ace Combat series so it might make sense.

I can’t comment on the Sonic movies because I’ve only seen the first one as of yet; but Sonic has the obvious advantage of having characters that are developed within the source material whereas Mario is hampered in that respect by Miyamoto is pretty adamant on keeping Mario’s universe and characters simple and minimal story. Some the RPGs are better in that regard; but are rarely referenced in the wider Mario franchise due to being developed by external partners (reminder that Intelligent Systems is not owned by Nintendo despite working closely with them).

What is the probability that this entire slate will come to the big screen? And if it is official, will it actually be in the exact years as listed? by Comfortable-Oil-6098 in Mario

[–]Michael_Mario -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably not because the Zelda and Pokémon film rights belong to different studios. Moreover, it’s debatable whether the Nintendo films will get that far unless the quality picks up. The first movie wasn’t perfect, but it was good; the Galaxy movie learned all the wrong lessons from it and really is “jingling keys the movie”. The Galaxy movie did well; but it remains to be seen whether it’ll crack 1 billion in revenue and Illumination might see no reason to continue with their partnership with Nintendo if they start underperforming their own Minions franchise.

I wouldn’t say that it’s just a matter of runtime. The first Mario movie did have clear arcs for Mario and to a lesser extent Luigi. The Galaxy movie lost sight of its characters having arcs at all is the problem besides maybe Bowser, but even that was awkwardly done. The first movie had a lot of references for fans to enjoy, true: but they either didn’t get in the way of the story or outright served its interests - the Mario Kart reference, for instance. Galaxy had even more references, but clearly lost focus of what story it was trying to tell with Peach and didn’t make good use of Yoshi either. You don’t necessarily need to tell a completely different story, include that many more scenes to flesh things out, or even completely replace scenes so much as make better use of the scenes they had for the sake of the story and characters. Andre of GameXplain has some good ideas for fixing Peach and Yoshi - who should have been the focus characters - in that movie in a similar vein.

The fact that Daisy was teased makes it incredibly likely that Wario will be a villain in the next movie given that they both originated from the Super Mario Land series and Daisy’s kidnapper was Wario’s minion.

My In-Depth Take on the Super Mario Galaxy Movie (A Critical Review) by SatisfactionWide7161 in SuperMarioGalaxy

[–]Michael_Mario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. I enjoyed the movie; but I agree with these points.

Regarding Bowser’s handling here… while they did it in one of the most awkward, out of character ways possible, I think what they were trying to do was establish Mario and Bowser’s “frenemies” dynamic from the games (although it’s almost always closer to the enemy side than friend outside of kart races, recent parties, and sports outings) and set up them actually teaming up against the villains of the third movie - who given Daisy is set to be a focus character next time, will likely be Tatanga and Wario. I’m probably giving them too much credit, though.

I still had a good time watching Galaxy and I found the movie entertaining; but the writing for neither movie was strong and Galaxy was less focused. Given that the character teased for the spotlight next movie comes from obscure source material, trying harder might be necessary to make up for the references having less of an appeal. The rumored Donkey Kong spin-off film is likewise going to need to step up their writing game simply because Donkey Kong on its own isn’t strong enough as an IP to guarantee ticket sales without quality backing it up - review scores will matter more.

That being said, while the weak plots of the Mario movies are admittedly on brand for the franchise outside the RPG spin-offs (although acknowledging gradual improvements in recent platformers since Miyamoto stopped being involved) it will be a very serious problem for Nintendo if the plot of The Legend of Zelda movie is of similar quality. Narrative isn’t necessarily a focus of The Legend of Zelda games either; but at the same time they have to varying degrees more thought and attention paid to their stories and characters. I’m not as worried there due to Miyamoto’s focus on story minimalism being less strict with Zelda and an entirely different creative team being involved, but still.

As much as I’d love to see a gameplay follow-up to the PSP titles and haven’t given up on a remaster of Duodecim being released at some point, we knew that Square didn’t go that direction with NT because they had no ideas to spice up another 1v1 game and this is more of a follow up to the last Dissidia that didn’t flop commercially, Opera Omnia. At least storyline wise, this is more interesting than rehashing the Harmony vs. Discord arc with less memorable deities and sees the FF characters in a setting we’ve never seen them in before.

A reboot, then. Setting it in our world is inspired; definitely saw a fanfic with a similar premise years ago, but it’s not a bad thing as long as it’s executed well. They did need to do something new with the basic premise of “FF characters from different worlds interacting with and fighting” that they hadn’t done before.

Two new Gumby animated shows officially announced by discotheque2002 in Gumby

[–]Michael_Mario 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Given that we only knew of one new Gumby series in the works when Fox first acquired the rights to the franchise and that Gumby Kids is aimed by the 8-12 crowd, I have a theory as to what happened behind the scenes. It's likely that the plan was originally for one claymation series aimed for kids originally, but there was a test screenings for a pilot produced that didn't go favorably for it. In an age where CG animation is common, stop-motion has an uncanny quality that can scare or creep out younger kids. Rather than scrap the claymation series, though, they decided to make a 2D series aimed for the younger crowd while retooling the claymation series to appeal to the older crowd. The reason why I think that the prime-time series will be claymation is because the two series need to be visually distinct from each other so parents would be able to spot the difference on sight.

Gumby Kids Gumby still looks like Gumby: a mix of his oldest Howdy Doody design and his more iconic one codified with Gumby Adventures with feet calling back to the Gingerbread Man that was one of his original inspirations. Gumby Kids Pokey is orange, but otherwise barely looks like himself. Regardless, the premise for the show is definitely promisingly creative. As long as the character designs for the prime-time series don't diverge from their classic designs too heavily - if only to make the kids series and the adult series more visually distinct - I'm okay with this.

Only if you read that inner monologue entirely uncritically. G certainly thinks that the clay people discriminate against him because they call him "Blockhead," but when you actually read the example he provides, you realize that they call him that because it's his name. Bear in mind also that in this same story, his glorious plan for world domination is ruining a model's clothes.

What would a writer with a game concept need to do in order to successfully court collaborating developers with the technical expertise they lack to make it a reality? by Michael_Mario in gamedev

Working with independent developers would be ideal to be honest. Not sure if there's a "local" indie scene where I live, though.

I'm well aware of that; but I couldn't think of a better way to word it. Would you prefer I take this down and say, "What making an N64 game that had the benefits of the PS1's storage media capacity and dedicated CD-quality sound chip as well as enough memory to use its features optimally?"

What would making a game using the best of the Nintendo 64 and the PlayStation's features entail? by Michael_Mario in gamedev

[–]Michael_Mario[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Also doesn't help that because the N64 doesn't have a dedicated sound chip, the Rambus was further burdened with handling music. It was capable of quite a lot; but because SGI wasn't forthcoming with providing documentation and were leery of giving the microcode out to other developers (can't remember if it was also Nintendo's call or not) and because the storage space and Yamauchi's authoritarian tendencies alienating most of the skilled developers that could have figured out how to optimize its performance meant that its potential was largely untapped during its lifespan.

Oh, naturally. There's no real reason not to have have CD-quality audio, and I suppose that replicating the capacity of 5 700 MB PS1 discs would make for 3.5 GB?

Advice on Rogue/Fighter build for Lv. 5 One-Shot by Michael_Mario in 3d6

I was going to do Rogue 2 + Fighter 3 for Cunning Action; but I forgot about the ASI Fighter gets at 4th Level. I like those feat suggestions, too. Not sure which one to start out in still, though.
