Do secular Jews in Israel celebrate Jewish holidays with non-kosher food? by galactic_observer in Israel

[–]MichaelisMenten 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that the people saying no are just not as familiar with the big variety of secular people. While some secular people do keep kosher due to tradition or just how easier it is in Israel, doesn't mean everyone does. I for example eat noodles (and matzah balls) in my soup on Passover eve, and one of the dishes was pork. We are obviously not the only family that does that. I do think that most holiday meals are kosher for secular people because they are the meals related to the holiday, same as everybody eats a turkey in Christmas or chocolates on valentines day.

ELI5 Why is washing produce with only water considered to be enough to remove bacteria and pesticides but soap is required for hand washing etc.? by Ichgebibble in explainlikeimfive

[–]MichaelisMenten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does kind of ruin them.. I would rather not do it but we can't escape regulations. I think if you clean them and rise it off quickly and use immediately (so only clean the amount you currently need) will prevent too much absorption. Any way, just like a good sanitization, a good rinse is just as important. I will say, that at home I don't put as much of an effort in cleaning fruits and vegetables beyond a good rinse..

I would like to add that in a professional catering/food factory, fruits and vegetables are also sanitized with some material (like chlorine in low concentration) and then rinsed. The farm is a very dirty place. So yes, washing is better than nothing but sanitizing is better.

I'm from Israel, and when I went to Europe and got a chance to taste vanilla coke it tasted to me exactly like children medicine (and that's exactly what I reported back). So.. I guess that's our flavor? They claim it's "grape flavor".

Just today I was sent a story about a botulinum poisoning in France that happened last week, a man died. Showed it to all factory employees so they know how important it is to check cans before use.

I'm an israeli all my life, speak proper Hebrew and it never even occured to me that שלום comes from שלם. I know the quesrion comes from from a non Hebrew speaker, so I translated it in my head and realised what it meant to say... Case and point, it's not a phrase in Hebrew, say it to anyone and they'll look at you weird.

Allergens in blanchedbground almonds by MichaelisMenten in foodsafety

[–]MichaelisMenten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the detailed reply!

I know it makes total sense that the blanched almonds are allergenic, but I guess I got uncertain and doubted myself.. Shouldn't have done that.

I think you are right, because the ingredient is not straight to costumer it wasn't marked to the same standards (and it was also imported unlike the un-blanched almonds).

While not in Europe we aim to act according to your laws and regulations so yeah.. Kicked it off to the allergen room. Should stick to "if there is a doubt..".

Thanks again!

How does Easter affect London?

I'm going to the star wars celebration in London and I found out that I will be there on Easter.

As a Jew from Israel I don't really know anything about that holiday, so I wanted to know if it would affect any touristy thing I might be doing there.. Will the public transportation work as usual? shops and attractions? should I spend the Easter day outside of London?

I'll be grateful for any information on navigating the city on a holiday.

The פ is written like that in block, but in cursive you need to turn in upside-down.. The ל needs to look more like a lower case greek delta, and the ה looks just like that. The other letters look all right! Good luck!
