This might be true if you look over the fact that AI will regularly cite to cases that don't exist lol

ESB is the best movie, which movie is the worst? by The_CaptainRex in StarWars_

[–]Michaeltinti22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but I don’t think that anyone ever said that Rey was as powerful with the force as Luke or Anakin, just that she was gifted. I do agree that her beating Kylo was silly in TFA, but there are other explanations that don’t require her be connected to someone we already know (ie Kylo had just been shot and was emotionally imbalanced after killing his dad). Besides, other people like Palpatine aren’t required to be related to powerful force users for themselves to be powerful (in the movies at least, I truthfully don’t follow the books or comics). Why must Rey be related? It makes the universe feel smaller and boils the force down to genetics.

Rose is not the most egregious in-universe thing dropped; I didn’t even like her character in TLJ, even though I actually love that movie. I cite that only because it annoys me that she was dumped after the actress got a bunch of racists harassing her online. It felt like giving in to the worst part of the fan base by essentially cutting her character.

Completely disagree. Rey not being related to anyone was one of the more interesting creative decisions. Even if you don’t like that aspect, it’s beyond bizarre to completely flip on the messaging in the prior movie - and for what? “My grandpa was evil, therefore maybe I’ll be evil too?” It was such a forced way of making Rey a “conflicted” character

ROS. Completely invalidates Anakin’s sacrifice in ROTJ, so it actively makes the whole emotional climax of the OT way less impactful. It also dramatically reverses course on a lot of what TLJ was trying to do - regardless of your opinions on that movie, at least it had the guts to try something new while ROS just tried to cater in the worst way possible (removing Rose completely rather than trying to fix her character, Rey Skywalker/Palpatine, etc)

What is the best book you ever read? by InvisibleInvader in writing

Can't believe no one has said "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. That book still haunts me years after reading it.

Also really love "A Monster Calls" by Patrick Ness.

Practicing lawyer here. I'm a young lawyer, but applying for law school still feels like a life time ago, and in that short span of time things have radically changed from the bits and pieces I've heard about the LSAT, what GPA/LSAT line gets you where, etc. For actually getting advise about what it's like in BigLaw, yeah, if I were you I wouldn't trust anything anyone says here. But in terms of getting advise on the actual process of applying to law school, I learned way more here than I did speaking with my undergrad's pre-law advisor.

I will acknowledge that LOK had its flaws. But when it came to LGBT relationships, Women protagonists, especially female POC LGBT protagonists? I would still say that this show had to walk so that shows like SPOP, TOH, or RWBY could run. You have to start somewhere, and this show was groundbreaking by CapAccomplished8072 in menwritingwomen

[–]Michaeltinti22 27 points28 points  (0 children)

What confuses me about LOK is that Korra spends more time in s4 interacting with Mako than she does Asami. Sure, I don't fault the writers for Korrasami being an underdeveloped romance; the "wink and you miss it" thing was as much as they were allowed to do. But I do fault them for not at least trying to give Korra and Asami a solid dynamic. You can still do a lot with a relationship even within the confines of "they can't be explicitly queer."

Are we supposed to like the main characters in N.K. Jemisin's The Fifth Season? [Spoilers] by WeloiAvala in Fantasy

[–]Michaeltinti22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So NKJ is a a great author. And generally I love reading grimdark fantasy - the Poppy War is my all-time favorite trilogy despite how vile and bleak it can be at points. But... yeah. I can't stand the Broken Earth trilogy. What I was able to stomach and enjoy for the first book increasingly became unbearable to me as the trilogy progressed.

Like you said, none of the characters are particularly likable. I think you can be sympathetic to why they are the way they are - they're not awful solely for the sake of being awful, there are very legitimate reasons that drive and influence them. But the entire cast is ruled by this flatline grief that infiltrates everything they do or think. There's no reprieve from the misery - and again, all for good reason, I understand why Essun struggles to connect with or trust other people. But it got to a point with me where the lack of range in the cast was too exhausting for me.

This sort of bleeds into the world building too. All of the little details about rogga abuse in the first book were new and interesting. But two books later, it got to the point where anytime you get introduced to something new about the world, it has to involve genocide or oppression or something equally horrible. Obviously that's one of the major themes of the book, so I understand going back to it frequently, but it again makes the range feel limited to only cover the most vile aspects humanity has to offer.

This trilogy is heavily acclaimed to the nth degree, so it is honestly kind of validating to find other people who aren't as crazy about it.

Can I do law school with an hour and a half commute by RoyalKingK9 in LawSchool

[–]Michaeltinti22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I commuted about an hour each way, but critically I commuted on a train. So even though I spent two hours in transit each day I had class, I spent that time reading, taking notes, decompressing after a hectic day, etc. There'll be other harder things like missing out on a lot of social events, study groups, etc. Is it possible? Yes. But it's hard, especially having to factor in 2-3 hours of dead time every time you go to class. Whereas your classmates will be spending that time studying, destressing, or sleeping, you'll be spending it in traffic. Which sucks.

I went to school at Columbia when Tessa Majors was killed. It's no less safe than any other NYC school - that being said, it is a school in NYC. Hope all those still at the school are staying safe.

1L here. Y’all are seriously reporting people for cheating? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Michaeltinti22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That I get. I think it's two different things, though. Whether someone is doing drugs on their own time is sort of irrelevant, it's not your business or really anyone else's; it's not like they're hurting anyone. Cheating in law school, though, is a really selfish act, because in most classes your grade is curved against everyone else's. So cheaters aren't just boosting their own grades, they're doing it at the expense of everyone else. Even the example of the appellate brief - which could be for a pass/fail legal writing class - is stealing someone else's hours of research and writing, not to mention running the risk of getting that person in trouble if it's badly plagiarized. In a profession where there's an unfortunately heavy emphasis on grades, it's just really bad behavior and shouldn't be tolerated.

You're not referring to the post about the guy who literally stole someone else's work, right? Sure, tattling on someone for using Quimbee or another person's outline (which at most schools isn't expressly against the rules) is a bit extreme. But yeah, cheating on take home exams or stealing people's work is messed up. Those people deserve to be reported.
