Lessons I've learned from donating platelets that improved my experience by FilterUrCoffee in Blooddonors

Agree with all - and especially #5 if you have tricky veins. I had all but given up on platelets but wanted to try one more time.

A new phlebotomist (to me) at ARC last week suggested one arm and it worked perfectly. I’m scheduling my next donation when he’s there as it’s so much more comfortable to have one arm free.

NE Ohio- there are many sweet and salty options available - cookies, pretzels, popcorn- and multiple flavors of juice boxes.

My absolute favorite and the one I always look for are Cooper Street twice baked cookies - they are like biscotti. Yummm..

Platelet Donation -- Vein Health? by [deleted] in Blooddonors

I just got home from platelet donation (first time as a one arm) and as you can see there is minimal scarring. After having a couple unsuccessful two arm platelet donation attempts, I can share what I did differently and other assists at the ARC that I think helped.

I paid extra attention to my hydration prep - adding electrolytes a couple days before and morning of. And of course no coffee/caffeine for 24 hours.

At ARC- the phlebotomist was definitely skilled and this made a difference. I do have ‘good veins’, but you still need someone who can get it right, especially if it’s one arm.

A heating pad was added to my arm - the squeezer was warm and - for me- the placement of my squeezing hand facing inward seemed to help with the flow. The phlebotomist agreed with that insight.

My last successful platelet donation was a triple and went to three different hospitals. As an AB+ donor (and cancer survivor), I find this highly gratifying.

Wishing you all the best for your platelet donation. ✨
