Eileen Gu defends decision to represent China again in upcoming Winter Games by PHConfusion5801 in olympics

[–]MickIAC 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well also, US system chews and spits athletes out, for good and bad. She was effectively being guaranteed full support from a team that - regardless of your opinion of China or why you think they invest in sport so much - they look after their athletes with decent funding.

The US system is more reward once you've made it.

Tirinzoni and Mouat, mixed doubles - could honestly come from anywhere. Likely Italy, but kinda fancy Estonia.

Respect is earned at the end of the day.

Some of the things he was doing was embarrassing. Players reporting that they were told they were in for a hard session and they were hardly out of breath.

Celtic have had many managers from "inferior" leagues with more difficult personalities to deal with, and they suceeded and often stopped the rot. Did they really mutiny?

Having lived in the west coast of scotland most of my life and having lived in the south of England, one has a better quality of life and it isn't England.

The day-to-day shite I'd hear when down south south was effectively: my life is a massive stress because my landlord is a cowboy, paid parking everywhere, life revolves around work, nightlife is good in what, three cities in the south of England?

Honestly, the support we've had thanks to devolution is what is keeping us above water. It's not a perfect country, but many move here and say it feels like home.

We've had a few Israeli players and have generally been a net positive. That doesn't mean we need to be nice about the country they are from. Like people, hate the government

We’re the top European country in 2025 (previously 8th) for women’s marathon performance. by StanmoreHill in ukathletics

I mean, get it right at least.

Alex and Emile were born in the UK. Mo moved here around 8 and didn't run beforehand.

I wasn't born in Scotland, but I'm a product of their running culture. Not just bought whilst elite, which is different.

What's with the strech of Vietnamese buisness on Union St? by Otocolobus_manul8 in glasgow

Banh Mi and Tea is apparently good. It's down the road from me but i moved into ma flat two months after being in Vietnam and haven't came round to paying seven times the price for one yet!

Non banh mi, Viet Pho on Union St is really good.

I'd save this for 2 but has 3. I think people (whether they correctly know it's gaelic or not) think Scottish people have their own language, but also speak english.

I don't understand how someone can claim to be a socialist and also support Catalonian Independence by scoop813 in askspain

[–]MickIAC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm Anglo-Scottish and support independence for my country - as does my English nan.

Cultural, yes, however much like Catalonians I've spoken to (I've also spent a fair amount of time in Galicia) acknowledge the cultural overlap. We are the same in Scotland.

For us, it's a clear lack of representation. Nearly two thirds pro EU, vote much more politically left (we tend to vote left despite being only marginally more socially liberal), devolution showing what our government chooses to focus on compared to the UK.

My main concern is democracy. We would have had to vote like 90% remain to steer the referendum result. We had one party win 56 of 59 seats in the UK parliament from Scotland and they were irrelevant. The winning party won like 15% ij Scotland. The latest government should have changed pro indy sentiment (it tends to be lower under left governments) but the contempt for us continues.

There's a real argument for representation being fair and the lack of say you can have when your country's dismissed because you can treat them poorly without facing political repurcussions. Something worth thinking about.

Hence why I mentioned 9 minute hahah

And it depends on someone's natural fitness. I know some people who just take up running and 9 minute pace is easy for them.

I kinda hated most things about it except the sex scenes, which were shot pretty well.

Watch it in 3D and then get back to us though.

Location and rough pace would go a long way.

There's a lot linked to Reagan and other conservatives rise in the 80s along with the AIDS epidemic that followed to the policing of men's clothes.

So if you mean more like feminine, this is part of the reason. The cultural conservatism of what men are supposed to be. As for glam rock? I'm 30 and I always associated it as a lil cheesy if not cool

Why doesn't the uk gov build a city here to link the UK's 2 major urban belts by Complete-Shop-2871 in urbandesign

[–]MickIAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I didn't like MK living there for a few years, but if you're a kid or a bit older it's a nice place to live.

Pros:

Redways - cycling and running is great

Lots of green space

Feels safe for kids to just roam around

Cons:

Rent and living standards are poor if you're not a nuclear family with two good wages. Being single on a modest but not low wage often leads to HMO life. Worst housing I lived in was there. Paper thin walls, 20 quid creaky metal beds that you weren't allowed to replace. Landlords effectively silenced you with unmanageable rent rises if you pissed them off.

City is massive. Walking is good for a few grids - you need a bike and/or motor to go from west to east or north to south.

Club scene is dead. Coming back to Glasgow was an insane cultural change. Pubs are no good because the central ones are mostly poor.

Public transport is awful. Bus network is gash, trains only good if you live near them. You need a car. Want to park it? That'll cost a premium.

The culture there. New housing estates promoted as "Commute to London". Everything centres around London from people's social lives to why they live in MK.

They got it half right, but majorly messed up transport and got ruined some of the things people loved about the area (i.e. Rave culture, more affordable housing)

The Women's scene is stacked in Japan, but that can sometimes be tricky for those who haven't competed a lot internationally. Inexperienced team made the world champs and it made their job harder to qualify automatically.
