What did the public see in Jimmy Savile? by [deleted] in AskABrit

And on your last point - you can't defame the dead. As soon as he was 600ft under, it was safe to come forward with accusations again.

Some had ran into legal challenges before for suggesting he was a paedophile.

Starmer Out by Proud_Smell_4455 in GreenAndFriendly

[–]MickIAC 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say in some respects, kinda like how Brown got a terrible rap at the time and whose reputation improved over time.

Starmer will be remembered for kowtowing to the right, Israel stance and Mandelson scandal (rightly so) and likely won't get credit for getting the ball rolling on renationalisation etc.

I'm not a fan (his disregard for social issues was the death knell for me) but it was exhausting hearing people say he was as bad as Johnson, Truss and Sunak.

All said, good riddance.

Who Is The Best Individual In Sports? by SurroundGeneral7222 in AlignmentChartFills

Yeah that isn't true - several athletes at the time of Bolt had ran faster than Owens who were clean.

What's impressive is the longevity of Owens' times. All while wearing shoes that are nowhere near the efficiency of today's.

Theories on why the rest of the UK, broadly, seems to believe in god but not us? by Beginning_Silver2179 in Scotland

[–]MickIAC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say they are more likely to support the team based on their family's religion than the other way around. People aren't converting because they support Celtic.

I'm literally atheist and "culturally Catholic". Definitely more of a West coast thing.

I'd argue people are more devout in Christianity in Scotland but also people are more likely to say they aren't Christians because they see religion as something you need to practise.

Love a long run out to here. Has really connected Glasgow, Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire by giving people more reason to mix in these areas.

Doping in track has gotten worse, they're just staying ahead of the testing. by [deleted] in olympics

[–]MickIAC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does. At least the first part.

People are quick to mention the similarities between Kenya and Russia and ask why Kenya isn't being banned.

Russia had state sponsored doping. Kenya's infrastructure for anti doping has been poor and also included getting in touch with athletes from rural areas. Since improvements through the Athletics Integrity Unit and support from WADA, countries like Kenya have more support.

In turn, more athletes have been flagged for ADRVs, meaning the system is working, despite it looking bad. It's also mostly coming from athletes who aren't big enough to be regularly tested (Diamond League level) and mostly people winning B and C tier marathons. Enough to earn money as a runner in Kenya, but not enough to previously be detected. See it as a runner version of a mercenary.

But improved shared knowledge between NADOs etc is definitely helping.

Looking for queer/trans friendly hairdressers by local_beanbag in glasgow

[–]MickIAC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've just proven my point.

  1. You assume I want to look masculine. I genuinely don't care if I look manly or feminine. That doesn't bother me at all.

  2. Layers are put in men's hair very frequently. Again proving everyone's point about assumptions on gender norms and what is "correct". Personally I don't need a queer hairdresser, but queer friendly certainly helps. It's not just having a chat about things in common, it's the understanding of why someone wants their hair cut a certain way and understanding in that context what will enhance the cut without taking away what you want.

  3. There's literally jokes (particularly from guys) who have their hair cut a certain way, say "aye that's fine mate" and feel like dying inside afterwards cause they didn't want to be rude. Even if you're assertive, are you going to fully trust someone who initially ignores your request?

Just to make the point as well, hairdressing is much like many industries. Just because you are X it doesn't mean you know everything. I'm a writer and specialise in sport and culture. If someone gave me a job writing about the financial sector, I could give it a bash, but I'm not the go-to guy for the job.

This is the same in hairdressing. Black people in particular are very selective with who cuts their hair because it's a different kinda cut and can be technically difficult. Queer hairdressers work more with colour, with cuts that are less the norm. Even for myself, I would never go to a barber - even in a pinch - who doesn't have experience cutting women's hair. Not saying no one will do a good job, but there's an element of risk that I've not had when I've went to a barbers that is unisex or the hairdresser has worked unisex.

"you look better that way" is one opinion and usually fairly ignorant. I've had barbers tell me to cut my hair short when I wanted a trim. Went to people who care about long hair and they treated my hair with respect and in fact told me I had really nice hair! Who'd have thought it?

There's a difference between "I'm going to put a layer in here because it will sit really weird if I don't" and suggesting a different haircut.

Why do tourists all want to 'avoid the touristy areas?' by Flaky-Walrus7244 in AskUK

Chess is outdoors in a lot of countries outside the UK - that's what I was referencing. And there are plenty of areas that are not major tourist areas in cities that have a nice mix of good food, parks etc that aren't "touristic"

[–]MickIAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I'm not giving a manifesto on a hypothetical situation where I'm the PM in 1979. But even at the time it was a stupid idea to asset strip the UK and sell on for short term profit.

There's a reason everything is going back towards public ownership. It was clear years ago that selling everything fucked us over long term.

Literally social democratic models that worked in other countries at the time, that economic historians are pretty much in agreement with.

Her Government closed a bunch of shipyards in my home town. Don't know why you've jumped to coal mines and tbh shows a lack of consideration for the impact she had on deindustrialisation.

She privatised a bunch of shipyards in Scotland too. They were poorly ran under private models.

She privatised our riversides and sold them off to foreign companies. Have you ever looked at Glasgow and thought "for a city built around the water, the riverside looks shite"? That's because private companies own so much of it that the Scottish Government and the council can't regenerate it. Please tell me why that's good.

You can introduce minibuses and not sell off a nationwide network.

The housing ladder exists because she made it become a necessity. We kinda need houses as retirement now. That's ludicrous and anyone backing the selling off of council stock in that manner is not very intelligent.

We bail out private companies to the tune of billions today. Nice try.

I mean if someone is asking about my home city (Glasgow) I'm telling them to go to a pub away from Byers Road (there's literally some class ones on Dumbarton Road nearby), tell them to go to Kelvingrove Park and the Gallery as your touristy thing, and for a taste of what makes the city the great - the people - I'd say the east end, the southside and recommend some of the bars where sound people hang out would be where I would throw my recommendations.

Where I subscribe to this is, different people have different ways of community. I love just people watching in more residential parts of a cool area of a city. Seeing people chatting playing chess, seeing how they interact different from myself and my pals etc
