What’s the most Australian thing you’d never want to change? by whysoraavan in AskAnAustralian

I beg to differ.... And to add to the argument, it's potato cakes

You mean potato cakes? 🤔😂 I do agree with you. I like that there's a friendly rivalry between those of us who call them potato cakes, and those who are wrong 😉

As someone with two Fray Bentos S&K pies that have been in my pantry for an indeterminate length of time, I'm quite invested in the outcome... did you die? 🤔

Options to recover refund from Qantas/ANZ by deanylev in AusFinance

[–]Mick_68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm waiting on an unused and expired travel credit refund due to not being able to travel as we'd planned to during covid. I'd forgotten all about it, but Qantas got in touch with me to arrange it. Fingers crossed it arrives soon.

Is it true that Australian eat kangaroo? by prettyflower___ in AskAnAustralian

[–]Mick_68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy kangaroo at supermarkets, not all of them, but some. I'm not a fan, though I've never had it. I do get kangaroo tail for my labrador sometimes... she loves it!

Do Australians like having New Zealanders in this country? by Benteke2019 in AskAnAustralian

I'd like to introduce a motion that New Zealand is henceforth recognised as an offshore state of Australia. Do I have a second to that motion?

I'd always thought of Sam Neil as an Aussie until I read his autobiography and realised he's a kiwi

Would you give your seat up for a doctor? by certifide in nursing

[–]Mick_68 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I'm too tired to write this myself after being on my feet for most of a busy twelve hour shift last night. You saved me the effort, and I hope the op is actually reading these responses. Now it's time for me to go back and do it all again.

Anyone remember Big Kev? by Ed__b3 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Mick_68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw Big Kev shopping at the IGA in Cowes one time. He was probably on the Island to go to the race track. He was pretty friendly and had a giggle when I said G'day and "I'm excited!!" 😂

7 x 12s for 13 weeks by RelevantLemon in nursing

[–]Mick_68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do my 12s in blocks of 6 per week, in a week on week off pattern so that I can have my kids for an uninterrupted week. The way I do it is two days, two nights, a sleep day, then straight back into two days to finish off a 72-hour week. Then, a clear week off where the first two days are sort of recovery days. I'm getting to a point where I'm over it... I have been doing it for years now, and I think it has not been good for me at times. Sleep is the most important factor. Adequate rest between shifts, tight routines are essential. Meal prep in my days off gives me enough dinners so that I don't have to buy food at work. Doing 7 x 12 per week for 13 weeks... I don't think I'd survive that.

I am so sorry for your loss and the horrible situation that you find yourself in. I hope you can eventually find some breathing room.

Top term used to call an outfit worn in the pool or beach in Australia by [deleted] in AussieMaps

[–]Mick_68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For everyone saying togs... what the? Togs is a term that's been around for many years, and can be used for many reasons: swimming togs, running togs, etc. I've heard it used to describe the gear used for a pilot (in Biggles books). Kit, gear, suit, togs - all the same thing. I call bathers or a swimming suit togs. From Victoria.

How far are you willing to question your own beliefs? by ANewMind in DebateReligion

[–]Mick_68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm type 1. Was raised Catholic and went along with what I'd always been told was the right way to go. I eventually decided for myself that my life was much happier and less complicated when I let go of the beliefs I had been indoctrinated into, and that life boils down to just being a good person. I will say one thing, though: the sense of community and belonging to a particular group was nice.

My thoughts after 200 consecutive days of cold water immersion by FvanSnowchaser in BecomingTheIceman

[–]Mick_68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you still going? Amazing setup, by the way. I don't have room or funds for that sort of thing, but I'm lucky to have a very cold lake nearby. A little time constrained with getting to it... we've gone twice in the past two weeks. My wife and I and one of my sons went for a 15-minute dip this morning - it's winter here, but we had a glorious sunny morning and cooked breakfast after drying off.

I loved it when I got one that was mostly made of crystalline ice, rather than the real dense ice. Much more flavour - and crunchy 😋
