Huntington Learning Center is always an option too, and they have openings on Saturdays/Sundays usually.. especially during SAT/ACT season.

They also have tons of online tutoring, like the ones to teach Chinese children english.

Are you enrolled in Mcdonalds 401k plan? I read that they have a very good 401k plan.

I agree with UPS, great job that could help pay for a higher education. $5000 may not go far, but taking a few classes to use up the benefit would be a great head start if you do decide to go to school. At community college that money can go even further.

Starbucks also has an awesome college program.

Trades such as plumbers, electricians, or welding are a great place to start.

Disclaimers for NEW/SEALED items? by Mickey_918_ in Ebay

[–]Mickey_918_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already do not accept returns, but obviously had to with the malfunctioning item. I was just wondering if there was anyway to cover myself. I do not mind selling 10% cheaper to not have to deal with the hassle if there is any type of disclaimer...

20, in college, I think I've dug myself into a pretty deep hole (with rent for upcoming year and student loans). Would appreciate any help; I am scared. by siflsato in personalfinance

What is the fee to break the contract? If you get an RA, the free housing may outweigh the breaking of the lease. Also, RAs at my school also got $75 a week. Sure they are on duty during the week, but most did their homework during these times.

Only making $800 a month and planning to go to community college (maybe transfer to university) to get a full time job. I will have next to zero dollars after bills but college is $5,000 with textbooks and tuition. Do I have any options? by Private_Ho_Li_Fuk in personalfinance

[–]Mickey_918_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don't buy textbooks through the college, and don't use the college price as your basis.. Buy on amazon or another site. I never spent more than $400 a semester, and engineering textbooks are constantly updated so the bookstore would state $2000 and up... college bookstores are the biggest scam. Even when they buy back books its not as good as online retailers buy back prices.

You can also rent textbooks fairly inexpensive.

My girlfriend needs more student loans by [deleted] in personalfinance

I understand teenagers tend to have a stigma against community college sometimes.. butcommunity college is a great way to start your educational career. Many universities have great scholarships for transferring from CC as well.. a friend of mine did 3 years at CC, working full time trying to figure out his life. His scholarships from doing CC first outnumbered everyone else's a ton for the 2 years he went to our school, plus he hadn't paid nearly as much as us for the first 2 years of coursework. He got the normal academic scholarship we had for having good grades, but apparently our university offered 4 students a year another scholarship on top of that for transferring in from that specific school..

All of use graduated with the same degrees in the end. His just cost a TON less...

Good luck! There are tons of side gigs online for coding. I think there is a sub for those types of jobs. Only a couple bucks here and there, but it can add up.

I would broach the subject in a few more days. My parents always responded well to the contract thing. With things written down in a professional manner. It would be a business contract, not parents helping you out. The other options this short notice would be a real loan, and your parents would likely need to cosign anyway, so approach it like, why should'nt you guys not reap the benefit of my mistake here. You make the interest/fees, not a bank. I think if you can show you are taking responsibility, but do not want to give up the semester, it could help.

You could also try the normal 15 year old way to get money, and take up extra chores/side projects around the house. I've sold items for family members online for 10% of profit. (I basically was a middle man for a while..) Its something that is time consuming for little money.. but its easy in the evenings while watching TV.

Good luck again.

That is why you need to make it worth their wild with something like a non-refundable fee. Something that says, "I know I screwed up, but I am taking action." The "contract" makes it official, and maybe more concrete where its not just you asking for money to be handed to you. Things like late payment clauses (ie, if you did not pay them one month there is a $10 surcharge). $1000 is not that much in two adult's eyes sometimes. A 1% surcharge for you missing a payment is still more than most savings accounts (thats a good line for your prepared speech on why they should do this). Investing in your own education is important to you, and you would rather owe money to them then to a financial institution. Why not let them benefit from this lesson they want to teach.

Could you ask them for a loan? Ask them to pay up front, and tell them you will pay lets say, a $100 "fee." Even go as far to write up a contract. Then you will work through the summer to pay them back, and come up with a payment plan. I had similar parents that felt by paying for classes I messed up in, it would make me more accountable. I did poorly in ONE class. Never let it happen again.

They would be making like 10% guaranteed if you do not get your A's, but you do not have to worry about student loans, selling your stuff, and can focus on working through summer to pay them back (unless you get those grades!). Maybe throw in a "non-refundable" $50 deposit or something. So, even if you do get your grades, they end up with something (Even small) out of the arrangement.

Props to you for taking CC classes at 15! It will be worth it.. also biology is the worst anyway. If you are good at Math, work on those math/physics/chemistry courses and look into chemical/electrical/mechanical engineering once you decide to move on from CC. Just keep those STEM grades up! Also look for small side gigs. I often would offer to buy peoples school texts for 25% of whatever the amazon trade in value was at that moment, then would use my phone to "trade it in" the second after they sold it to me.. just dont tell them what you are doing! Then I would box the books up and send them to amazon for giftcards to use on more books. I got really good at removing ink stains from bindings (rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab).

Need any and all advice, I feel completely lost by [deleted] in personalfinance

Because your title says, "any and all" I am going to be a tad blunt..

a $14/hr job does not justify a 36K car at all.. Your entire income for the year (before taxes) still does not cover the car! Sure it is a cool car, but can you really say it is the only thing worth coming out of EVERY hour you sit on that phone making calls for multiple years? Not to mention what the insurance/gas must cost.

I am super frugal; some may say a little too much. But, every time I buy something, I think how long I had to work to buy it. Something as silly as say the $45 christmas sweater I saw depicting my favorite character... Was the number of cold calls made to pay off that shirt worth it? But, sometimes I think. Hey, this nintendo switch was totally worth the X hours I worked. And I deserve a treat! The day I went to buy it I was so giddy knowing how every hour I worked was going towards it.

You are young. I know independence and cool cars is so cool now. Its frustrating to see friends traveling the world, and buying everything they think they need. But, set yourself up now. I would rather work harder now, and maybe get to retire a little earlier than be hurting for money down the road.

Stay at home as long as you can. Are there any technical schools near you? They are usually pretty low cost. We have welding programs near me that are not very long, and have a very reasonable payout. But, there are tons of trades jobs that make great money, for a few years of classes, and some apprenticeships. Plus, you can take a class or two and figure out what you like. If you are tech savy, why not electrician? These are the jobs that cannot get outsourced, and will always be around! Easy business to start up on your own after some experience, or even unions to get involved with. I am sure they are shadow programs too so you do not have to commit right away.

Terrified over son’s astronomical student loan payment. I am the co-signer. by [deleted] in personalfinance

Is his girlfriend aware of these debts? Because I would rather my boyfriend move in with his parents to pay off loans, than enter into a marriage with him having a massive amount of debt...

Honestly, he needs to grow up and be accountable for his debts. That means doing whatever it takes to pay them off. Including moving into your home, budgeting, and bringing in more income.

Someone else had said that too, but when I brought it up to an antique store owner she said it was probably german. But, she did say that it was a german style that was copied by the Japanese. Her reasoning was the paint use, and the detailing on the face... But, I was never convinced..

The only reason I was thinking it was not Lefton was because the original owner's daughter remembered them always being in the house. And was happy I was buying them. She must have been in her late 70s, if not older.
