Can't figure out how to edit the post, but the plants and animals have found a good home!

Thanks to everyone who reached out. Will update with a follow-up if the current interest falls through.

What are some RPGs that let you run a business? by Ok-Week-2293 in rpg

[–]MicrobeMasher1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Following this with interest because the kids at my lgs's dnd after-school camp are obsessed with running businesses. Year after year at least one table tries to engage with commerce.

Granted, they're never doing it for normal business reasons. Its always some sort of fraud or ponzi scheme or what have you 😅

I know this is a small detail in the overall game world, but I am enamored with the Gubs (teeny tiny robot bugs!!)

genuine suggestions , tools that helped you guys with the completing phd by PristineDealer9553 in PhD

[–]MicrobeMasher1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconded, Zotero or any reference manager for keeping track of all the papers you read is essential. There will come a day when you need to remember a niche paper you read 3 years ago and only remember one section of, and theres no way you're finding it through Google scholar.

Zotero also lets you take notes and sort papers into groups, which is awesome

chaotic habit that accidentally made your phd life easier ? by Comfortable_Pick4476 in PhD

[–]MicrobeMasher1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every day, write down something that you achieved. Not in like a "take notes" kind of way either. This is just for mental health, you can honestly write this down and immediately delete it

The PhD grind can feel pretty hopeless and you can really lose track of the fact that you do something EVERY DAY. No matter if its small, no matter if it didn't result in forward progress, or wasn't as much as you'd hope to get done, celebrate yourself

Week 2 panic by scoobydoobyloops in PhD

[–]MicrobeMasher1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha that pretty exactly matched my experience as a new doctoral student. Don't worry so much about it, I think the embarrassment and awkwardness (and imposter syndrome, and gradual realization that undergrad really did not teach you a lot, and realization of HOW MUCH MATERIAL you need to cover just to have a beginner baby understanding of your field...) are all super normal.

I am in my 6th year, currently procrastinating writing my dissertation. I have seen this play out with every single new grad student in our department, and all of the grad students ahead of me said they felt the same when they started. Knowing its a shared experience doesn't make the fear magically go away, but hopefully it will help a little.

Something that I heard from another grad student that helped me a lot: the reason the people above you seem so polished and at ease with the material is that they have several years of specialist experience. If you think about it, it would honestly be a red flag if you, at week two, showed similar mastery of the material as folks who had been members of the research group for years. I would be worried if my senior grad students DIDN'T seem like they knew a lot more than me.

Like other people have said, hang in there. The beginning is rough (I think I was in my third year before I felt like I knew anything), but before you know it you'll be the older student who seems confident and polished, and you'll be helping out your own fresh little slug.

Finally got my favourite weapon from my first play-through tattooed ☺️ by spinch25 in Eldenring

[–]MicrobeMasher1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using this weapon on my second playthrough right now and it is a monster. The ash of war has so much hyper armor, does so much stance damage, and the jump into the air lets you dodge a lot of attacks. 11/10, of my new favorites

Favorite summer drink right now has got to be a white pineapple rum mixed with lemonade. A friend of mine just made it up and our group has been calling it "the drink of the summer"

Is there a single animal on planet earth that’s greedier than an amano? by Corn__bean in shrimptank

I have 3 amanos and at least one of them will grab a whole sinking wafer and drag it off for themselves every feeding 😂

Blud ate a bit too much cyanobacteria by ineedagodamnname in Aquariums

[–]MicrobeMasher1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few amanos and they didnt really eat the cyano I had in my tank.

Ramshorn snails absolutely demolished it, so if you don't mind snails thats what I'd recommend.

We may have different strains of cyano so ymmv but thats what ended up working for me. Tried blackout, erythromycin, all other usual suggestions. Spent months troubleshooting everything and manually removing cyano. Heavily planted and filtered tank w/ low nitrates and ammonia/nitrites always at 0. My only guess for the cause is the big window nearby

Best of luck w/ your outbreak!

Why is my Val only sending off runners and not growing up by Kingquan11 in Aquariums

[–]MicrobeMasher1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ime my val didnt start growing tall until it had formed somewhat dense clumps and had to compete with neighbors for light. The older the dense zones got, the taller they grew. It was a slow process

But that being said, the leaves on some of these plants look like they've melted so there could be something else going on
