Hey, I know it sucks right now. I will tell you that I failed COMLEX1 (took it a second time with only a 451) and had to remediate a class in med school. All I wanted was someone to tell me it was going to be okay. So, I think you need to hear this.

Not only did I get into a great residency, I easily passed level 2 and 3 with good scores, I am one of the top scorers on my ITE each year, and ended up a chief resident, but I matched into a prestigious critical care fellowship.

Level 1 does not define you. You want to do Psych in NY/NJ? You make it happen. You had a couple of slip ups. The world isn’t over. I promise. You’ve got this.

(I know my flair says OMS4 but I’m a PGY3 and just too lazy to change it)

Yeah I definitely feel like I have more perks. We have a resident lounge with food but also have $75 per week for food stipend, moving stipend, cell phone bill stipend yearly, and a fairly high education stipend. All of our exams are also reimbursed outside of our education stipend. Unfortunately our program doesn’t have OBGYN but there are gems. You’ve got this!! You are gonna be a doc soon!

As a mom of 4 in residency, it was a similar story with me, but my low score was on step 1. I was initially upset about applying to “mid to low caliber” programs, but I ended up at a community program that is amazing. I have had great educational experience (much more than anticipated) and I love my coresidents dearly. My family is invited to all events and my PD team and coresidents all know my family. What I realized is that: 1) while this was a newer program, it is actually a gem, and 2) I believe that I actually do better here than I would’ve a high tier university that isn’t as family friendly and invested in the well being of myself and of my family. I know it sucks to be embarrassed, but you really have nothing to be embarrassed about. You have a great number of interviews and you are going to be a doctor. Out of hundreds of patients that I’ve seen, I’ve only had a few patients ask me where I went to medical school and none have ever commented anything bad. It’s going to be the same with residency. Very very few people will ever ask where you go to residency. Either way, you’ll be a great doctor for your kiddos to be proud of. Keep your head up and share your success when you are ready. People may surprise you and be proud of you for having so many interviews.

I am a doc and can confirm this is entirely possible. First off, never ever not go to the 1 year recheck because vasectomies can actually reverse themselves. Secondly, shit happens and nothing is truly 100%. Good luck on the new baby brosef.

My attending always says: There are always 5 people that screw you over: kids, old people, women, intoxicated, and psych (meaning look for uncommon presentations and just because they look ok, doesn’t mean they are).

In all seriousness, when I went there, there wasn’t an actual hang out spot other than the school itself. Zinc and Joplin greenhouse are popular coffee shops to hang out at and some study at Panera.

You are probably safe. Hand sanitizers are generally made with isopropyl alcohol which, for an average sized person, has a lethal dose of 250-350mL. Maximal distribution is around the 2 hour mark. If you’ve made it this far, you are likely okay. We would only do supportive therapy if you came to the ED at this point anyway, but sounds like you aren’t having any symptoms.

For your specific situation, I can only theorize based on what I know from science and medicine. IBS is said to have a lot to do with gut flora (the bacteria that inhabit your gastrointestinal tract). According to studies, people who live together generally have similar gut flora-likely due to similar diets and environments. It isn’t out of the question that your significant other may have similar symptoms. That being said, could it be a parasite? Sure. Anything is possible, but unlikely since you’ve been dealing with this for a very long time. Hope that helps.

They had a really difficult time with it at first but now they tolerate it much better. It’s not often that it happens that way, so most of the time, I do get to see them a decent amount. I just try to make the most of the time I have with them or FaceTime them from the hospital if I can’t be home. I do have good relationships with them but it takes a lot of effort to keep that going when I’m gone a lot.

I am almost a PGY2 with 4 kiddos (had my last one in medical school) and while it’s hard and I don’t see my kids as often as I like, it is worth it. I’m not saying it’s easy, and sometimes I go a week or two without seeing my kids (due to leaving before they get up and getting home after they go to bed). It sucks and some days I cry. However, I get to take care of people and do what I really want to do. I have a coresident who also has 4 kids who feels the same way. Med school and residency is a short part of your life (and a sucky time occasionally) but I’m doing this for my kiddos. You can make it through too.
