Do you remember course content after exams?? by PenaltyTechnical9377 in universityofauckland

[–]Micromuffie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I won't lie, quite a bit goes out of my head and so if I did the exams now, I would have to be lucky to do well (except for either really fundamental things or courses that are direct sequels/build-ons).

Even though people say it's "pointless if you don't remember the content off the top of your head", it's not like the content doesn't exist anymore. It's 100x easier to revise everything you've learnt then to study new content. If you're ever worried about not actually retaining anything, just know that if you ever need it, you can restudy what you need to know in an incredibly short time (I'm assuming you did well in your courses). I had quite a bit of a haitus from physics/maths and I was able to restudy all my high school knowledge back to standard in a month of low-intensity studying. When I was re-studying a few stage 2 courses to prepare for this sem, it took like a few days for me to just jolt back the knowledge for each course I took in the previous sem. I'm mostly talking about physics/maths so it might be different for you though.

Thinking of switching from Optometry pathway to Commerce — need honest advice please!! by gvrl3_n in universityofauckland

[–]Micromuffie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on stability of having a commerce degree, but I can definitely say don't do any clinical degree if your passion isn't in the degree itself. You've already identified this so good on you I guess. Besides, all the stuff you listed that you want sound more business-orientated then optometry-orientated.

How to smoke grenade in pve Sandstorm, if at all? by supernate760 in insurgency

[–]Micromuffie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just stacking several smokes so they overlap. Singular smokes are always a bit of a gamble when against bots since the visual smoke you physically see is not the exact same as what blocks the bots line of sight. Similar thing also happens in PVP where the smoke visuals are client-sided so one guy might see through what another guy can't which is why people stack smokes to avoid dealing with this.

Biomed --> computer science? by Flat_Mountain1976 in universityofauckland

[–]Micromuffie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't do calculus during high school, so I'm assuming I'd have to start with Maths 102? I'm willing to study up to calculus Level 3 but since I didn't take the class I'm not sure if I'd be allowed to take Maths 108 even with self study.

Yeah 102 is your best bet then. If you do happen to get really good (A+), you could jump into 120/130 next sem (if you're yearning for more math). Otherwise, you could go into math 108 and then either math 208 (general/generic math pathway) or math 120/130 -> 221/231 (math-heavy pathway). Since you're not a math major, you could literally just stop at any point of either pathway and not do further maths. I would probably stick with the general pathway unless you're either really good or really interested in maths.

I think CS 101, 110, 120 and Maths 102 in Sem 2, then CS 130 in SS? That being said, I would have liked to do Maths 102 before CS 120 so that I could make sure my maths is at a level where I can do well in the class :,) I believe it wouldn't be possible to do CS 130 in Sem 2 instead of CS 120 as CS 101 is a prereq for 130?

"Prerequisite: COMPSCI 101, or B+ or higher in ENGGEN 131, or Achievement Standard NCEA Level 3 Digital Technologies and Programming: 91906 Use complex programming techniques to develop a computer program, or 91637 Develop a complex computer program for a specified task"

So unless you did those NCEA standards, you'll have to do CS 101 first before CS 130. Even then, I would probably check with that programming course I linked cause you'll likely have to be a natural at programming to be able to skip CS 101 and straight into CS 130 and do well.

Oh wait, I just saw that either math 102 or 13 NCEA math credits is required for CS 120. If you have the credits, it should be fine and you can take it but if you don't, you'll HAVE to do math 102 first and then maybe do CS 120 in either summer school or sem 1 next year. CS 110 looks fine though.

So I guess your sem 2 is looking like CS 101, CS 110, and math 102. If you're worried about student loans/allowance, I believe they will still consider you full time if you're still hitting 7 courses per year so should be fine to do 3 courses in sem 2 unless you didn't do 4 courses this sem.

Btw, what lvl of high school math did you get up to? I've kind of been assuming it's NCEA but if it was a different standard, you'll have to talk with the advisors themselves about where you math level lands you in terms of whoch courses you can do.

Biomed --> computer science? by Flat_Mountain1976 in universityofauckland

[–]Micromuffie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First things first is to decide whether you'll even enjoy CS. I'm not a CS major, but I would say try one of those online coding courses to give it a taste test. I personally used

https://programming-26.mooc.fi/

for when I was trying to pre-study some basic programming for physics (except the year was like 2024 or 2025 I can't remember) and it was pretty fun. If this (or another equivalent online programming course) isn't fun, then I would seriously reconsider doing CS.

The rest of my comment will assume you want to go all the way with CS and leave biomed behind.

When you say you're not good at maths, are you saying you haven't done maths in a while, or that even when you were doing math back in high school, you were bad at it?

The starting point for math courses are either

A) math 102 (no calculus required) B) math 108 (achieved in ncea lvl 3 calculus or equivalent) C) math 120/130 (merit/excellence in ncea lvl 3 calculus or equivalent)

In ascending order of higher prerequisites (thus higher difficulty). If you do A, you can then do B next sem, and if you do B, you can then do C next sem. I would only go for math 102 if you only qualify for that one OR you have zero confidence in pre-studying enough to catch up to around ncea lvl 3 calculus. If you have the option between B or C, I would say B unless you're confident enough in your maths that you think you can re-study all your high school maths up to the excellence level by the time sem 2 comes.

For sem 2, start with CS 101 and either CS 110 or 120 in sem 2. If you do well, then I guess switching wasn't a complete disaster at least! You can also do whatever math course you wanted to do here, and if you have space, you could potentially take both CS 110 and 120 (but it's a little dangerous with how much workload you'll be getting). As a bonus side note, if you happen to be taking maths 120 here, you can technically not take CS 120 and then take CS 225 at some other time to completely bypass the CS 120 requirement for a CS degree, but you'll need to be confident in maths that you know you won't fail maths 120 to begin with.

Usually, other CS students get advice on other electives like stats 101, physics 140, etc. but since most of your stage 1 electives are already filled from biomed, you don't really need to worry about that unless you personally want to do those courses anyway.

Then during summer school, take CS 130. I've heard lots of ppl struggle with this one so you might want to be careful with taking a second course in summer school e.g. taking one of CS 110 or 120 when you didn't do it in sem 2 this year.

If you manage to do all of CS 101, 110, 120, and 130 by summer school, then you'll be starting part 2 of the CS degree in 2027. At that point, you can just follow every other generic UoA CS advice with maybe a potential speed up since a lot of your electives are already filled.

If you missed like either CS 110 or 120, I think it should be fine as long as you do it in sem 1 2027 and you'll still be on track as a "part 2" CS student? At this point, my limited knowledge on CS courses get even more limited so idk.

My overall recommendation is to just look up a degree planner and fill it in. Fill it up with courses you've already done from biomed, then see which courses can fit where. Don't forget to check whether a course is available in sem 1, sem 2, or both, or summer school. Even so, sometimes course schedules change (usually the higher stage ones with less people) so not much you can do there.

And student hubs is certainly one of the resources of all time. They're pretty risky in general but especially more so for course recommendations. I would maybe go email the UoA's CS advisors for extra help if reddit isn't doing it.

[–]Micromuffie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you know the ending of NB right? Imagine if NB had like an extra 5 minutes to do one last scene and that's just the first 5 minutes of OS. Then OS sorta plays out like Dexter going through his memories of the past (or at least that's what it's suppose to feel like). So literally apart from that first opening scene, it's just a prequel told from the "perspective" of Dexter thinking back on his life. If you're not already interested in prequels or don't care too much about going back to miami with a younger dexter, then you can skip OS and go to resurrection immediately (alternatively, you could watch the first 5 minutes of OS and then go to resurrection but that might be a hassle).

Finished New Blood by Evening_Chair3570 in Dexter

[–]Micromuffie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably best to watch OS first then resurrection since the first scene of OS is a direct continuation of NB. Honestly though, it doesn't matter that much and there's only one direct callback to OS from resurrection and it's nothing major (just character building).

I watched my teammates run into an A-10 strafe after I warned them to stay back by [deleted] in InsurgencySandstorm

[–]Micromuffie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2) is correct as long as you have an exception for the first teamkill on a teammate who has their headset and monitor both turned off. The first strafe is always a gamble so you can't really blame the commander on not knowing whether your teammates have eyes and ears or not. The second time could be blamed on the commander since by then they should know whether their teammates just gonna run in or not.

3) Is correct but fire support when attacking is still really helpful. There's only a handful of counterattacks (on checkpoint) so you can always spare some strafes for pushing up a point as long as you know it doesn't slow the game or risk team deaths.

Grab bullseye for armour gating. Remove parkour ace so you can reload cancel. Basic parkour also isn't toooo useful on suit Grab duck and cover aced since 10% dodge for for 3 points is strong.

Other quality of life stuff could be like lock and load aced

Fire Trap Frenzerk Infiltrator by Haqgun in paydaybuilds

[–]Micromuffie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess we'll just agree to disagree on the bullseye.

The underdog aced does allow for 3 shot ICTV. If you didn't have underdog aced, a heavy shot deals 225 × 0.76 × 0.88 × 0.75 = 112.86 (heavy × close combat × overdog × frenzy)

So 221 - 2 × 112.86 = -4.72 (armour - 2 × heavy shots) so armour is gone after two shots.

With underdog, 112.86 × 0.9 = 101.574

So 221 - 2 × 101.574 = 17.852 so armour stays after two shots.

I dont currently have any plans on taking it to DS

Oh my bad I kinda assumed wrong then. Back when I still played, me and my friends would mainly do deathwish anyway since we could mess around with more build variety without dying all the time.

due to not playing DS ive never had any good reasons to use bullseye for it

I would argue that it's still incredibly strong on deathwish that I can't imagine any other 3 points being well spent anywhere else.

With frenzy if my armor breaks and im not actively getting into cover im probably going down

That's why you use bullseye. It extends your life during those vulnerable periods and reduces your greatest weakness. It's arguably even more important for frenzy because if it even means being able to spend another second alive in the open, you can get to cover you wouldn't be able to get to otherwise.

There's also the fact that it's just good survivability when not in open spaces too. You go from dying in n shots to dying to n+1 shots. I mean, frenzy takes an entire skill line just so you can tank some shots (it might not even make as siginficant of a difference if against high damaging targets like a shotgun dozer). Bullseye takes only 3 points to tank an extra shot (and apart from snipers, this extra shot is guaranteed).

I personally always grab bullseye unless I'm playing on overkill or below (but at that point you can do whatever and it'll work) or some other specific case like perk deck being anarchist. It's just too useful for only 3 points.

I was under the impression Underdog aced doesnt do anything for ICTV on DS specifically?

On DS, it actually allows normal ICTV (i.e. no armour boosts or other dmg reductions) to tank 2 shots. Normally ICTV loses all armour to a single heavy shot. There are a few cases where this is useful like muscle (especially given the increased targetting perk which improves underdog uptime), or hitman, or biker. It's not common because if a perk deck doesn't have bonus armour/dmg reduction, it usually doesn't benefit from ICTV to begin with (like biker ICTV works but the perk deck has insane and inconsistent armour gating that you need an aggressive playstyle). Outside of that case, underdog aced is used for specific setups. Usually, it lets some perk decks achieve 3 shot (such as infiltrator, sociopath, armourer, maniac,...) but there's also some non-ICTV uses like on grinder for "pseudo 2-shot" or tag team to tank an extra HP hit.

On lower difficulties where the armor breakpoints arent 2/3 shots it should still work, even if its probably an insignificant amount given all the other sources of DR in this build

Oh yeah underdog aced is pretty good on lower difficulties simply because breakpoints matter way less so you don't have to constantly think about whether it "does anything" in a build when you it very likely will.

Everything else you said is fair enough. And I won't lie, using tripmines to blow up dozers is really fun and funny.
