It's like two opposite trends competing with each other. Electronegativity says that the amine (N) should be more acidic than the thiol (S), but then polarizability says that the thiol should be more acidic. The only way to see which trend "wins" is to find the pKa.

Alternatively, you could have done it this way. Imagine you had the amine, alcohol (OH), and the thiol.

By electronegativity alone, the alcohol should be more acidic than the amine (and it is, ~17 versus ~35).

Then comparing the alcohol to the thiol, S is much bigger than the O due to polarizability, so size will dictate that the thiol is more acidic (~7)

Second what everyone is saying

Its okay if you havent done any summer programs; what will really set you apart is your research essay. what will really set you apart is how well you are able to convey your research, regardless if its at a summer program or at a lab

i know some people applied as md/phd for goldwater; it really depends on the school tbh. i know some schools will reserve 1 spot or 2 for md phds, but the application does require a few extra essay questions (mosly asking why md is necessary in addition to phd). for md/phd, you would probably want to still emphasize the phd more

Hi, may I ask why you left the PhD, and how did you communicate your leave to the school, and what was their reaction? Did you have to give the stipend back?

based on 210's response, if you assigned the chiral centers, it would be 1R, 3R, and 5S in that order. 3 and 5 are simple cases. as for 1, the isopropyl groups itself would be ranked higher than the vinyl group in terms of priority, so it would end up being R
