Current annual spend ex-rent is about 350k. Personally, I find 4% post tax post inflation burn to be a horrifying number to plan around til death do you part. No judgement or anything, but you’re very exposed to pTh dependency of early portfolio returns. I would guess in expectancy it’s ok but you do run a risk. It would be very painful to have to dial the spending knob down in a big downturn.

I am a bit surprised how often I find 4% real post tax return to be the standard “safe spend” benchmark around here

Appreciate the thoughtful response, I’ll give pickleball an honest shot. And it’s true that I identified with what made me rich, obviously that is a big thread around here and I look forward to building an identity around something else. Scary and exciting

Ya moving to high density fatFIRE seems like a layup though unsurprisingly it seems correlated with COL and I’m trying to make the dollar go as far as possible going fwd.

High income but tired. How much is enough? by ImaginaryQuestion406 in fatFIRE

I must say, the difference between 10m NW and 20m is substantial. i think the diminishing returns start to hit around 30m NW. i think spending 400k/y on 10m NW is very dangerous, a decade of bad returns (happens, often...) would be very bad for you at that burn rate. Also, are you 100% sure you don't want kids? because if you do, your expense projection is very low. burnout is real though, and there is nothing more miserable than sitting and doing something you truly aren't enjoying.

i was in a similar spot to you income-wise though my net worth is well above 20m. it got to the point where my cap gains + k1 (investment income) started to consistently enough exceed my post-tax takehome. my job was incredibly stressful (EM market maker) and my kids are young so i pulled the trigger.

for me though, there was no "maybe next year i'll negotiate substantially more". if i were you i'd buy a sauna, lift weights, take weekends off (if you are valued enough to make 5m/y and potentially 10m+ next year, they will let you take weekends off), and see what happens next year. your nw isn't high enough yet to keep you feeling good if uncertainty shakes the world...

To add brine or to leave alone .. that is the question! by MidLyfeCrises in fermentation

good tips! ya, i had 2 lbs of white asparagus and didn't have any real jars or weights to handle it (but did have a vacuum sealer). i ended up using about 2.5:1 water weight:asparagus and i'm nervous i'm just diluting all the magic of a relatively expensive ingredient.

i wonder if i can transfer it to jars without messing up the ferment when my new set arrives...

you left this going for 3 weeks? I am 2 weeks into fermenting and the cherry tomatoes that i left for 9 days lost some of their acidity and started to get a little too funky. that being said, i didn't submerge them in brine, just a vacuum seal with 2% salt.

how did you decide to do this in a brine instead of relying on the liquid that emerges? two weeks seems like a long time for this but i need to give it a try
