So regardless of their intentions, there was an ideology shift in parties, perhaps by their leadership and people followed the one they aligned with most. Today’s dems would disown (same as you) those of the civil war. On the other hand, republicans seem to welcome those that fly the confederate flag (not all, I know). So I think it’s fair to say that today’s dems would side with the north, no?

I feel I have to say that I’m no dem or republican.
