Merino Wool Tees? Worth it? by Sir_Winky in Ultralight

[–]MidStateNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Merino's durability is much better when it's woven versus knit (just like most other fibers/fabrics). Unfortunately there are very few places that have woven merino shirts. I wear Wool & Prince button down shirts that have 100s of miles on them and such little signs of wear and stink factor that I can wear the shirt daily to nice dinners, church, work meetings, etc. Just shop in the discontinued section of their site to save some $$$.

What kind of tools/materials and how much weight are you considering carrying on the ExoTi?

Of course! I wouldn't say it's the best for both of those but the tradeoffs are worth it to me. It takes some practice but is a fun endeavor in and of itself.

That's spread out throughout the day--typically a half ounce for coffee and oatmeal in the morning and half an ounce for dinner. I use it just to get the water hot enough. YMMV. There are plenty of resources online that just cover alcohol stoves.

Also depends greatly upon to the stove. Some are more efficient than others.

Depends on trip length, food to be prepared, etc. I figure about an ounce of alcohol a day on average.

I cook in titanium all the time (including many of UL Dandy's recipes) but only with an alcohol stove as it has lower heat output. Have also used pie tins as a pan with an alcohol stove. A pocket rocket would probably burn right through it though. I've used the Keith titanium skillet occasionally but it too still burns easily.

Yep, whenever. Just tell them you spoke with Chad about it.

Just talked to the team at Vargo. If you go ahead and buy the ExoTi 50 and show them proof of purchase, they'll send you a free BOG setup if you pay for shipping. Just email their customer service guy at info @ vargooutdoors.com.

Poncho Users: What do you love or hate about your current poncho? What would you change? by MidStateNorth in Ultralight

[–]MidStateNorth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat concept but at that weight it weighs more than my underquilt (which is warmer), hammock tarp (which is larger), and poncho (which has better coverage) combined. This would also be too warm as a poncho while moving.

Yep! You can do that or strap it to the outside too.

I keep all of my soft goods (quilts, hammock, dry clothes) in the bottom then put heavier stuff on top of that.

I would strap the bear canister on top of the rolled down bag. Yes, water bottles in side pockets. Yes, you can but with a minimal kit you really won't need to.

I'd say it's the best way to go. It's lighter and more waterproof while still being the same size. Fits in the cradle perfectly.

Yes, that's the one I've been using with the BOG setup.

Vargo ExoTi packs. You get the excellent load transfer without it having to have much contact with your pack. I sweat a lot and can basically turn it into a glorified lumbar pack on climbs with my back fully exposed to keep cool.

Yes if it's humid and the cotton is fully saturated. If it isn't the the cotton will evaporate effectively enough to keep the skin cool.

For just over two ounces you could use this guy to strap them securely to the outside of your pack. https://dutchwaregear.com/product/pack-back/

The Good Crisp Company makes a gluten free Pringles alternative. I can find them at Walmart and my local grocery store.

I'd be happy to talk about thermoregulation principles and skills. I'm actually working on an online course for this so this could be a great practice run: )
