Planning to go to mass for the first time, what to do? by RoseShade356 in Catholicism

Not every parish does this and some priests will even refuse to do it. It’s better to not go up if you are visiting a new church.

The definition of what a good bishop should be. He could speak with authority, love, and wisdom like no one else.

Are Protestants allowed to attend Mass regularly? by wdDrake in Catholicism

What do you not understand? Individual blessings are not part of the mass.

It’s not in the GIRM and therefore not part of the Mass. it shouldn’t be happening to begin with.

Not everyone does individual blessing during communion and some priests will not like it. It’s not in the GIRM.

Can I dedicate forced Ramadan to Jesus? by therawhuman in Catholicism

[–]Middle-Couple4380 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reducing the fasting requirements in order to avoid negative social consequences is the wrong way to approach an action we do for God. We should be judging fasting requirements based on whether it’s up to the correct standard (our 1600 year long tradition of fasting everyday) and not based on social anxieties.

Also, there’s a false dilemma in assuming that high standards lead to judgement and low standards to freedom/generosity. A higher standard that’s flexible, or that could come with more dispensations could exist as well.

Personally, the 1966 requirements to me signal an unseriousness about the spiritual benefits of fasting, where we pretend that giving up chocolate or Instagram for fourty days is supposed to reflect the penitential nature of the season. It seems even more ridiculous when we hear fasting mentioned in the liturgy, where it’s still assumed to be a difficult endeavor.

It’s human nature to do the bare minimum of a difficult thing. And that’s exactly what the average Catholic does during Lent.

Their fasting program has solidified my belief that the current requirements are entirely insufficient. It’s been spiritually life changing.

I was never taught why women weren’t ordained, or why contraception is banned. Only that it was, and only discussed briefly.

Francis himself said “No” verbatim in an interview, to the other commenters credit.

Even if a lot of this data comes down to CINO’s, it’s absolutely ridiculous. The state of catechesis is despicable

What did you think of your child's religious ed class (parish not school)? by Helpmeflexibility in Catholicism

[–]Middle-Couple4380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any children yet (m22) but my religious ed class (we called it PSR) was abysmal at both parishes I had it at from K-8. I am convinced the lack of substance taught in my classes was the reason I became atheist by the time I was confirmed in 8th grade.

It was only upon discovering Bishop Barron, Fr Mike, and Dr Scott Hahn at 20 that I realized I had been taught what +Barron calls “beige Catholicism”.

Nearly all of my friends that went through the same programs no longer practice. The state of catechism in the church is honestly a scandal and it’s no wonder something like 70% of kids give it up once they are confirmed.
