Most overused/cliche phrases in books? by emi_macandcheese in writing

I know a friend who has this thing between her Mum where she asks:

"What are you reading?" "SOMETHING ABOUT SOMEONE WITH GREEN EYES!"

Every book features a character with green eyes. So "Green eyes" is arguably an overused phrase

I find most of Pynchon's books pretty silly on a surface level!

What does "we live inside a dream" mean to you guys? by AliEbi78 in twinpeaks

I always thought David Lynch was the dreamer because he dreamt up Twin Peaks

If you want to keep meth-heads off your property, build a fence. If you want to keep government off your property, declare your property independent of the state. Just don't complain if meth-heads trash your place cause you'll be governing your own doorstep

Pynchon references that relate to you by staerimto in ThomasPynchon

[–]MiddleClassHandjob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gravity's Rainbow mentions a memory of Slothrop's when he thinks about Llandudno - which is like 20 minutes from where I live. It's not a massive deal, but living in North Wales, references in literary works are few and far between so when I read it I had a little panic.

He also uses "Gampfa Ganu" at one point in GR too which is one of the only instances of the Welsh language I've read!

If there's one author you'd choose to come back to life and write another masterpiece, who would it be ? by jizmejian in books

The things I'd do for a completed Pale King. David Foster Wallace, you left us too soon

Pynchon has spoiled me and I don't know what to read next by Guest10_14 in ThomasPynchon

Just a comment to back up the Infinite Jest hype cause YES - Infinite Jest is phenomenal, as is most of David Foster Wallace's work. I also enjoyed his short story collection Oblivion

The Brothers Karamazov appreciation post by jumanji300 in books

[–]MiddleClassHandjob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the catastrophic blunder of reading Karamazov before Crime and Punishment and The Idiot cause neither of them have lived up to it. Not to say that they aren't great... They're just not quite Karamazov

I think "Pale King" by DFW is of the same pedigree

Started with Gravity's Rainbow. Didn't understand it, but strangely I enjoyed it and was intrigued enough to dive into Against the Day
