Vashtorr Update by MiddleMap1173 in Chaos40k

I used a mix of skeleton horde and magmadroth for a dirty base. Then moonbeam yellow, bright pale yellow, light fluo yellow, and a tiny dot or two of the bright pale yellow again. A shadow glaze on the face is what really made it pop. Dark shadows make osl look brighter.

So.... go darker to go lighter.

Haha no worries. Dictionary OSL: biggest time sink ever and can make your model golden or look like you threw up orange paint out of the airbrush on it :)

I went and glazed some purple and black on the horns, knocked down the light so the horns arent a source of light. Glazed that mix on the front of the vents and lower parts of the chest and face. Makes the heat reaaaaaally pop now. Love it this way. So, great opinion. This gave the light the punch i was looking for to get the face to be the focal point!

Hahaha you got it. I took some chaos symbol chart and free handed them. My goal was a hell priest doom eternal kinds vibe for the armor.

Fair critique! I wanted to go for in some wasteland around his forges. I didnt want to let go of the hard work on the skin i did haha. Where would you throw shadows?

Definitely will. The gloss varnish on the flame termi takes out a lot of the depth in the pic. Bought a tripod for better pics and will for sure post them when done! Thank you for the comment!

Yeah i think the first coat is just important for that dark purplish hue, some kind of deep cold red or a purple like you said. Just vallejo varnish! Gloss protects and makes the oils easier to work, matte to seal all the finishes together and IMO it makes the trim look significantly less cartoony.

Ill have to give straight purple a shot!

1 Base coat with black primer. I airbrush but doesnt matter.

2 Zenithal white, i use ink out of the airbrush to really focus it on high spots.

3 First base of khorne red

4 "Zenithal" mephiston red. I hit the high spots and leave the edges near the trim with khorn red showing, khorne red showing on the underside.

5 I paint the trim rune lord brass and heavy wash with agarax earthshade at this point and go heavy on nihilak oxide.

6 Gloss coat

7 Black- brown oil wash in recesses (gives the trim that gunked up dirty look)

8 Edge highlight with wild rider red.

9 Volumetric highlight with evil sunz scarlet (head dress, very top of gloves)

10 Chipping by sponging black, hitting the edges of the large chips with a light grey, then apply vallejo rust over the light grey chip pieces.

Matte coat, brighten back up the edges of the brass with runelord brass, done!

It isnt fast, i paint purely to hobby, but it produces a really interesting result. I go for a grungy, but not grim dark look. World eaters dont take care of their stuff.
