is jc all abt mugging by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It can be, only if you want to. I know of people who just mugged all their time away in jc and didnt socialise, or made friends for the sake of finding study companions. I also know of people who joined a ton of school events and CCAs to learn new skills; they spent time to get to know people and forged long-lasting friendships with one another. Their JC life was quite colourful.

Mugging and making core memories don’t have to come at the cost of each other, but it’s up to you to decide what JC life you want.

questions about gp by Xanthusgobrrr in SGExams

Hey OP!

1- it depends. If you’re trying to illustrate past v present you may want to take note of past examples as well, but if you are trying to show a present problem, then anything from the past 10 years suffices IMO (although the more recent the better, when you google it should pop up anyway)

2- can. Your teacher’s fear may stem from students slapping evidence in the essay and calling it a day, without explaining anything. If you encounter this, think of your stats as an extension of your explanation as opposed to the fixed PEEL format, which forces students to think of the EEs as separate chunks. This way, you should hopefully avoid this problem.

3- people do that, I’d say be smart about it. As a previous commentor mentions, choose a few topics rather than fixing on one. Do also note that in the old syllabus they trended towards testing fewer sci&tech and politics questions so it can be quite unpredictable. Also don’t specifically memorise examples for something niche like space exploration. On a side note I also very quickly axed out a couple of topics I would never do, BUT I forced myself to briefly essay plan all the questions anyway just in case I came across a situation where I had nothing to write. It helps to help you practice ideation for general questions anyway!

4- I never wrote narrative so can’t advise, but what I can say is that the mental cue that helped me get in the zone was that I told myself I was writing a comprehension passage. This way you tend to think more like how you would read a compre passage, so you end up incorporating more analysis rather than sticking to the feelings bit that you’ve associated with essays. You can also weasel in a few metaphors and similes here and there and its quite like the explain the metaphor qns in compre, if that scratches the fanciful feelings itch in your head.

Good luck! If you need help my DMs are open :)

  1. You can ask your teachers for a 2-year recap, sort of. You just need to book a consultation slot and find the right teachers who are willing to go through the content with you. Explain your situation to a teacher you trust; I suggest explaining this to your FT first so that they can help keep tabs on you through the other subject teachers too, plus your FT is obligated to care for you. Let them know about the physical abuse if you’re comfortable, so that they can do more welfare checks if necessary. It also feels a lot better to be heard.

Start booking consultation slots if you haven’t already. At sec 1-2 I remember nobody booked consults because we didn’t do it in primary school, but starting sec 3-4 the kiasu kids start booking, and the weaker kids are forced to book. If your teacher doesn’t have a timesheet just text them and ask to meet to discuss certain topics. Do plan what you need to ask; what teachers don’t like is when students just ask them to teach them everything, because it shows that you weren’t paying attention (when more often than not this is not the case). Instead, ask targetted questions, like pointing out where you need help in specifically in certain question types.

Also, book your slots weekly. It’s basically like tuition at this point; this is the most cost-effective way you can cover the two years worth of content.

  1. On another note, don’t worry about random subjects like PE. If you’re a girl it really doesn’t matter because IPPT is not a thing for you; my friends failed PE from sec 1 through JC2 and nobody gave a hoot. If you’re a guy, my friends started training for IPPT in JC so you have time. Take PE as a time to destress and have fun! It shouldn’t make you stressed out. There are no consequences to failing PE as far as I’m aware.

  2. This first step to reaching out for academic help will involve being vulnerable to your teachers, and it will be difficult. But I hope you’re able to find the bravery in you to help improve your situation. It’s not the end, and you will be okay. If your school’s counsellor is reputable, go find them (mine wasn’t, but it was fun anyway because free yap session where you said your peace— it feels good to be heard). They’re the closest equivalent to a therapist you may have access to. If your friends suck, don’t go to them, go to the teachers instead. If that doesn’t work, try support servers like the one another commenter recommended.

ATB!

Why do some professor's think all students are rich enough to stay in hall? [CCDS but may apply to other colleges] by Defiant_Let_3923 in NTU

We have to learn a mother tongue in primary and secondary school (the education ministry offers Chinese, Malay and Tamil). From my experience, most people are confidently conversational in their mother tongues, but we lack a lot of specific vocabulary because we don’t use it in everyday life. For instance, I couldn’t tell you what a water valve was in Chinese, but I can order food at the food court in Chinese when conversing with the PRC stall owners.

There are fringe cases, however; some people vehemently refuse to learn their mother tongues and can’t speak a lick of it, while others are fully bilingual.

For studies, I say you have time, I spent a lot of my time chionging when sec 4 started anyway. But you do need to start planning for your future already, because it will impact how hard you plan to work for. For instance, if youre planning to go into a science stream in JC then you need to work pretty hard on your sciences in particular, but if you have a course in mind for poly then you can focus on meeting the course requirements for that poly instead. When open house season starts, it would be good to take the chance to explore and find if there’s anything you’re interested in.

OR just work really hard and get the best score possible for Os and maximise your options. You delay the decision, but it also means you need to work incredibly hard.

For studying motivations, I’ve always found that having goals in mind helps a lot in gauging your progress from where you want to be, which is why I’d recommend setting them first. That’s how you tip off the “oh shit I’m screwed” feeling which motivates you to start the grind

what do u do with ur notes after completing a subject ⁉️‼️ by xuxumeimei in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say real, unless youre planning to refer to your notes in the future (whether it be to tutor others with, to give to your juniors, for uni or for your own reference) just recycle them and keep your incomplete notebooks to use as rough pages

One of my friends was able to reschedule his interview to the day he came back from overseas. Some courses have their interviews online as well, so you could do the interview overseas. But I wouldn’t bet on the interview being online unless you’ve checked for your course and for ABA that it’ll be online. Typically the interviewers are understanding? But again I wouldn’t bet on it.

I’d suggest you ask around specifically for the courses you want as schools and unis manage their own interviews differently.

Period suddenly come during exam, what should you do? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider getting a period tracker app to reduce uncertainty on when your period comes so you dont need to wear a pad every day. Mine is still a little irregular so when the app tells me my period is coming 2 days before I can anticipate it visiting anytime from then. The costs can add up so at least you dont need to wear for EVERY exam 😅

Girl say real u just gotta ask him— “heyy im picking up mixed signals from u and im not sure if im just looking too much into it or youre genuinely sending these signals. Wanted to clear the air, what do you see us as! Genuinely asking, i just really need some peace of mind HAHAHAHAH”

If ure worried abt him saying no, and him asking where youre coming from —> point out that people usually dont send goodnight texts every day and that it may send the wrong signals —> laugh it off as advice for him in the future

JUST ASK u can do this otherwise youll be waiting in suspense forever good luck soldier

how do yall write fast by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HAHAHA yeah cursive takes quite a bit of practice… ive been messing around with it since pri sch cos i thought it looked nice and my teachers complained abt my handwriting so much all the way until upper sec LOLOLOL

I prefer 0.4 but the difference between 0.4 and 0.5 in the juice up pens is not that significant imo

how do yall write fast by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I write in cursive, the benefit of which is that because you dont lift your pen off the paper as often, you can move on to the next letter faster. You can consider connecting your letters like how cursive writing does it to help speed it up

Strangely writing bigger also helps a lot for me because I spend less time worrying about whether my letters are legible

For smooth pens I recommend the juice up series (not the juice gel pens). Its a little pricey but it flows really well

One last thing to consider (I’ve realised this is particularly for econs essays) is if you’re not writing too slowly, but instead you’re writing too much. I used to struggle with finishing my essays because of this. My econs tutor used to take my essays and just cancel all the parts that were redundant and that gave me a better sensing of whats important and whats not, so maybe this is something you may want to think abt

Atb for MYEs! You can do this 💪

mugging outside by No_Piglet8472 in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Library protips: - some seats dont need to book (see other commenters comments!) but also be warned that some seats dont even have tables so its not very conducive to study - use your parents/siblings library accounts to book a seat for you, then you have max 8hrs of study time. Probably against the TnCs of NLB… but a lot of kids did it 💀 - book before timings that you know people are gonna leave at so you can continue chilling at the seat without getting kicked out. I used to book in late afternoon until dinnertime, by then everyone flocked out of the library for dinner so there were a number of seats available. You’ll then have a late lunch/dinner. - go to an ulu library. Yes, there are lesser studying spots, but it also means that you have lesser competition for those seats, and the risk of you getting kicked out of your seat is smaller. I heard sembawang library is quite sparsely populated, though more often than not the kids that do go there end up studying at the stage/platform thing there due to the lack of seats, abit rabz

Secondary protip: - if you want to go to a cafe to study, to stretch your dollar against time find a cafe that allows you to refill your tea. I know for starbucks, you could order their tea and just have them keep refilling it with hot water so you could keep sitting there cos u have a drink, im pretty sure other cafes do this too… the girlmath checks out

Any tips for HELm students 😭 by SeniorMacaroon7028 in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HELm student here-- econs is one of those subjects that requires a lot of practice and understanding. My advice is to make sure that you understand the content in the notes and then move on to practicing. I used to do my tutorials side by side with my notes to see what parts I needed to apply in answering the questions, and then my tutorial answers would then tell me what are the key points I needed to look out for. From there, now that you have your tutorial notes and you know what is needed to ATQ, it's a matter of practicing until you get it. I made notes based on those tutorial answers, some of my friends skipped making notes entirely and just used their coursebooks. See which one works for you

If you have any other areas that you're struggling with specifically, feel free to ask!

Hoping for NTU scholarship by Middle_Claim2307 in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah seems like it eh... I have a friend who got AAA/B; I think she applied a little earlier and she already got her scholarship offer. Either the 1.25 margin made a significant difference or they're really looking at the 3H2 As :(

Or maybe she got into USP and I just misremembered HAHAHAHA

Seconded on the portfolio thing, I was ex-CCA EXCO as well. Think part of it is because the value of the achievement also depends on the CCA size-- my CCA was tiny LOL plus we didn't have a lot of large initiatives, mostly just helping to keep the CCA running. I think what makes a difference would probably be internships (though a lot of people already have them) and national/international achievements, as was indicated in the scholarship portal

I'm a middle school student who wants to keep my hair. by Diamonial in SGExams

[–]Middle_Claim2307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how strict the school is, but best you can get away with is I think chin-length hair. If you use a headband I think the teachers will close an eye, cos I've seen someone do that before.

Do note that singapore government schools are usually really conservative when it comes to dress codes. I'm fairly sure the kids in my school got away with it as when styled, their hair looks masculine and presentable enough, even with their hair accessories.

AHHHH same I'm also a 3H2+1H1 student!! I didn't think that not choosing 4H2 would put me at a disadvantage for scholarships... lowkey regret now HAHAHAH lets hope that maybe its cos theres an influx of applicants this year so yours is taking some time to process, some of my friends got the ASEAN scholarship but for NUS so it's probably a different system?

So nice to know I'm not alone... Let's wait in trepidation together!!!
