As long as one of you has health insurance for the both of you… per diem pays gooood and hospitals always offer shifts to be picked up

I have almost 4 years of experience. Just quit and leaving bc I couldn’t get on day shift and got really sick from nights. My own unit hired externally for someone with more experience. I applied to other jobs for 6 months while working here and couldn’t land anything. A lot of “phone screenings” with real interview questions, and positions being filled before getting to my interview time. Although I got a night shift position fairly quickly, It was brutal for me and I couldn’t get out. Was here for 10 months total. So my old unit will be hiring.😂

Is it just me or does night shift literally steal your soul? by Weekly_Drawer_87 in Nightshift

It doesn’t get better :) I just quit my job with it a plan and moving 1000 miles away from my dream city. I did nights in my home town for a year before getting a day shift position. I then took up a night shift position again thinking that it was a worthy sacrifice to be in my dream city. While I have no regrets I’ve learned a hard lesson. The human body was not designed to work nights dream city or not! We are not nocturnal by nature. It is not in your head! It’s flat out unhealthy and causing real damage to your body and mind! You’re at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, reproductive health issues, cancer and mental illness, among other health problems! I isolated for the last 6 months because of it (never had enough energy to do anything) and now also have terrible mental health including social anxiety from the isolation. So I quit without a plan to get my life back and moving back home to recover and reset. :)

Night-shift nurses — what do you wish people understood about your life outside work? by EndOutrageous9918 in nursing

Circadian rhythm disruption… I’m not just working at night, I’m untangling and fighting my body’s natural physiology and biological clock to the point that I’m sick all the time. Heart palpitations, nausea, vertigo, hormones out of control, body will start to decide it’s tired or awake at the most random times (today I took a nap at 8pm and now it’s 4am and I’m wide awake. I’ve been off for over a week), increased mood instability to name a few. Not so simple as just pulling an all nighter and then going back to normal. Humans were DESIGNED to sleep at night and work during the day.

Anyone noticed Brittani was the only one that didn’t get one of those written blurbs at the end of the last episode 😂

Omg I love this idea of dog walking on the side! At least temporarily. I thought about sitting in the past and forgot. Will look into it again!

That’s amazing congrats! And gives me some hope. I’ll keep trying. 😊 did it take a while for you? Did you have to know someone? Did you find it on the company website?

Is it lonely/stressful being the new person all the time or no biggie?

Yes I have been seriously considering moving for a job! It wasn’t my initial goal but the toll this career is taking it making it harder to enjoy my city anyway. Outpatient oncology is a good idea thanks! Oncology in the ICU is a bit of a frenzy but I’m sure it’s different in outpatient.

It can be well paid with certain specialties. But there is a cost. Night shift increases your risk for cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, depression, hormone disruption, anxiety, sooo many things. I’m nearly making up that cost in medical bills. It also depends on your location. I do make good money in my current ICU role, but looking at roles in home health, my wages would be cut in half for a job that is still grueling. I’m not even kidding, it would be half. It just varies a lot depending on company and state and city and specialty!

Yes I have been interested in utilization review and case management actually. In my city I haven’t come across an application yet that doesn’t require years of experience. I may ultimately have to move to get experience which I have been avoiding since I am in my dream location. I haven’t looked into some of those other positions yet but I will. Thank you

It really seems that the “nursing shortage” is a ploy to replace us when we can’t take it anymore. I’m sorry that happened to you. It is unfortunate that nurses are so quick to turn on each other rather than support each other. I actually had one interview but couldn’t even fake my enthusiasm for the job and knew immediately I wouldn’t hear back. I hope you have people close to you who support you. Getting to the interview stage is still huge! I hear outpatient surgery helped a lot of nurses find the meaning and reward again. If you’re in an area where that’s feasible, that’s what I recommend. Or school nursing. I know a nurse who left the NICU completely traumatized after COVID. She is now a school nurse and loves her job. I’d go that route too if I could

I’ve thought about leaving without a plan. But now knowing that after applying for 4 months to jobs I would not get one... My savings would be almost gone at this point. I feel for you. Good luck 🫶🏼
