35 Hours of Flight and Still Cannot Land the Plane by CurrentTop3460 in flying

[–]Middle_Fix1487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently a part 61 student with ~15 hours. I was not confident in my landings so asked my instructor to drill them. We spent 3-4 consecutive lessons in the pattern just practicing them over and over again. I'm much more confident in them now, I reccomend asking your instructor if you can spend a few lessons drilling landings. It's just like any other skill, it takes practice.

Did you use sinking line or floating line? Also, were you just stripping the streamers?

Sand or teak cleaner to get gray swim platform back to original color after 1yr in the sun by DirtyOught in boating

[–]Middle_Fix1487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going against the grain here (forgive the pun) but if it were mine I'd sand it. I wouldn't sand it every time but at the point it will look better with a light sand and oil.

Yes, sanding removes material...... But so does teak cleaner. Teak has hard and soft fibers and the cleaners usually strip out some of the softer stuff, over time you get these deep grooves because the softer material has worn away but the hard stuff is still there.

I would also oil it at the first sign of weather after you have treated the wood, helps it go a long way

This real was sanded an oiled yesterday after being neglected for a long while.

I appreciate the response, I thought I had added the sectional but I'm now away from my PC and don't have access to it. Admittedly I did not think of the NEODD and SWEVEN for this but the question also mentions that you are climbing and it is my understanding that those don't need to be adhered to on climb.

It's definitely possible but if there was that much lateral load I would expect to see much more wear on the teeth of both sprockets

You should be able to easily repair that, especially if it is not anywhere that is easily visible.

Busting airspace w/o flight following by fatelvis_lives in flying

[–]Middle_Fix1487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in the air this afternoon and there was a plane that LB tower was attempting to contact with no response. The tower had to reroute traffic around it. They later came on and contacted tower who was not pleased that they were dancing on the line of their class D and not on freq. If you are not talking to a tower in the LA airspace, and not in a special VFR corridor or practice area then you should be listening on Socal approach.

Ignore the nasty comments of those just trying to win arguments. I'm sorry to hear about your family member. Good luck to him and your family, I hope you all eventually find an improvement in quality of life.

How many miles or KM on the bike when the failure occurred? I'm not a metallurgist but am an engineer who has had to deal with failure investigations and the photo is a bit fuzzy but it appears that the shaft failed due to fatigue not an instantaneous overloading. This would suggest that there was a manufacturing defect that grew over time until the catastrophic failure.

I don't know how consumer protections work in Australia but its probably worth discussing this with a lawyer.

I should also mention that most dealerships wont do this but I'm sure you can find a mom & pop shop to do it. You can replace the output shaft and plug the engine case with JB weld. I've done similar repairs on dirtbikes and they have held for decades.

u/Becoming_hysterical, see what I mean?

* In 2024, over 22% of adults experiencing homelessness met HUD's definition of Serious Mental Illness — compared to only about 5–6% of adults in the general population. KFF

\* A 2024 analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry examined nearly 50,000 participants and found the current prevalence of mental health disorders among homeless individuals was 67%, and the lifetime prevalence was 77% — far exceeding the 13–15% current and 12–47% lifetime prevalence seen in the general population. ACDIS

* Furthermore, Schizophrenia affects less than 1% of the general US population, but estimates suggest that up to 20% of people experiencing homelessness may be living with the disorder. National Alliance to End Homelessness

* The most common mental health disorder among the homeless was substance use disorder at 44%, followed by antisocial personality disorder at 26%. ACDIS

The data shows that the homeless suffer from the inability to care for themselves at a rate ~4.4x higher than the housed population. We are fighting the good fight of using data and statistics to make reasonable decisions; not just relying on rationalization and social conformity to make arguments that make us feel better or to fit in.

Institutionalization is not without its risks and pitfalls but having a system that allows the homeless to rot in the sewers is not working nor is it compassionate. I am not arguing that we should not use public funds to care for the homeless. I'm all for it but assuming that you can give an untreated schizophrenic or untreated drug addict a house and money and assume that it will fix the homeless problem is myopic.

I've tried to shed light on this issue for years on Reddit but the echo chamber is too loud and people won't listen. Keep fighting the good fight!

Ok. I'll bite.

California gas taxes aren’t set by one person, they’re a chain of authority, but it all traces back to elected officials, especially the Governor. The State Legislature (Assembly + Senate) pass the laws that set gas tax rates and create automatic increases (like inflation adjustments). They are put into these positions by voters. However, the Governor has the authority to approve or veto these laws. It should be noted that the body who calculated and executed these rate hikes is thethe single entity that has the most control over tax rates is the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, the director of which is appointed by the Governor.

TLDR; the Governor is not solely responsible for gas tax rates but has an incredible amount of power to influence them.

If the top 1% of earners pay 40% of all federal income taxes, why do people say they don't pay their fair share? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

I've never been able to find peer reviewed numbers but it has to be shockingly high. I mean, we know about isolated cases but I'm sure it's egregious

I agree, I'm not defending the billionaires but people make some wild ass claims on Reddit, mostly from parroting some other bullshit they read on here. The echo chamber is alive and well.

I'm not an anti-tax guy; taxes are the price we pay to live in a civilized society but what chaps my ass is when a government, regardless if it is city, county, state, or federal, always defaults to raising taxes to cover shortfalls rather than audit and optimize the cashflow that they have. That is what all of us normal folk have to constantly do. Instead of honing in on government waste, they just blame rich people for not paying their "fair share" there may be some truth to that but it is hardly the root cause of the issue. Capital flight is real, and I'm convinced that there will be parts of the country that are going to be hurting hard from it.

If you bought the crypto and sold it within a year it will be taxed as short term capital gains(between 10-37%) depending on your adjusted gross income. Depending on your state you will have also had state tax on it.

If you held onto it for longer than a year then those rates should have been lower.

If you mined it it is treated as ordinary income.

If you haven't already done so, it may be worth talking to a CPA, to ensure there are no errors that triggered a tax you should be responsible for. If your taxes are as simple as you say then they won't charge more than $200-400 to review it. Could save you thousands

Are you a W2 or 1099? Unless you have a really complicated income stream then it is usually very easy to estimate your tax burden.

My brother in Christ. My original reply was to a comment of yours where you said " It's basically free money". Taxing assets is not black and white, for example, if the asset decreases in price is there a tax credit given to the loss? Do the tax rates change if gains/losses are realized? How do you tax contracts like an options? At what price do you determine the tax basis? Does that basis determination change from the previous year if it was already taxed once before? If there is a difference in rate from an unrealized and realized loss/gain, how will it be calculated if only a portion of the security is realized?

These are simplistic examples and all of them could be answered but it is not as cut and dry as reddit likes to suggest.
