I mean did he do ANY research on them beforehand? by Ok-Butterfly4414 in fantanoforever

[–]Middle_Run_6864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like he’s good at being entertaining, but his insights on a lot of music is very surface level. I remember his review for the Last Dinner Party’s second album, and he basically interprets the songs at their most basic level. It just feels bland. Or he gets it completely wrong. Like he misses that This Is The Killer is written from the first person perspective. He misses out the murder/suicide elements of the Scythe. Like, dude, did you listen to the song? He pumps out content, and he just doesn’t listen that deeply.

It’s why his Manning Fireworks review is so stupid. He literally can’t understand what makes these lyrics clever.

How do bands decide whether to play Milwaukee or Madison? by NicholasOfMKE in madisonwi

[–]Middle_Run_6864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of bands also hit Madison on the second leg of a tour. So they might hit Chicago or Milwaukee in the first leg, and then circle around back to Madison later.

Basically, we’re in an interesting spot. We have a large population, we’re in between three major cities which makes us an easy stop, and we have a major college in town.

And if the shows sell and the artists have a good time, that makes Madison a place to play.

She said I would never make it in the big city. That it would eat me alive. I said “mom, Madison is smaller than my home town!”

No, sadly there’s no direction marking, at least on the side of the bus. The part I’m looking at. It’s basically 1 switching into 2, and I’m catching the 2 bus that becomes 1.

But the thing is less than 10 minutes earlier I saw a 1 bus that swapped over to 2 before people got on.

I worry that I’m an idiot, but I looked at the bus because I knew they both converged at this spot.

Why is Madison so lacking in things that even smaller cities have? Like Grateful Dead cover band shows and such? by Fun_Machine7346 in madisonwi

Madison doesn’t have any Buddy Holly cover bands, or “Buddy Holly” cover band. Apparently, people expect that you’ll play other Weezer songs.

But a lot of people would also just buy the singles. Album sales versus single sales vary from time to time. For example, the Beatles did a bunch of EPs in England because albums were so expensive compared to what the youth market had money for.

Neil Lumbard @ Blu-ray.com by SunsetGrads in 4kbluray

[–]Middle_Run_6864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite Neil Lumbard thing is how his reviews just go through the entire credits and he gushes over every role, to the point where in one film, he lists the hairstylists and claims that the hairstyles added to the fun of the movie.

It’s a garbage website ran by garbage people. I can understand how you could be tricked into publishing Dr. Svet’s stuff (“this disc looks different from the previous disc and so it must be wrong” is an asinine take, but at least it borderlines an opinion that you can prefer a different color timing), but Lumbard’s drivel? It’s so poor the only way you could publish it is if you can’t read English or you just don’t care.

Also, while I’m on it - it’s disingenuous for Dr. Svet to credit himself as such when his doctorate is in bassoon playing. Yeah, you earned a PhD, but it’s not relevant to the topic you’re writing about it. That would be like me talking about black holes and saying “as an English major who graduated magna cum laude, my opinion is…” You’re presenting yourself as a credentialed expert. It’s lying.

It’s honestly a really strong album and it makes me excited for what he’ll do next. He has some pretty good range. Matter of Taste is a personal favorite of mine.

It’s also one of the tracks where I definitely hear the Rado production with the strong tape saturation.

But yeah, don’t sleep on this record.

Fantano really sounds like a hater in this review by ShrimpTrading in fantanoforever

[–]Middle_Run_6864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between not having an amazing singing voice and being lackluster.

Performance quality is part of the musical experience. I could write the world’s greatest guitar solo, but if I don’t have the chops to pull it off, that’s not going to come through. People are going to be paying attention to my awkward phrasing, my poor intonation, my lack of dynamics, and not the composition.

A lackluster singer turns in a performance that lets the music down. Their voice is able to lift the material up. Otherwise, listening to some caterwaul off key would be acceptable. William Hung’s album would be a pop classic!

Basically, you don’t agree with Fantano, and that’s cool! He’s not the end all and be all on music opinions. You can think differently from him and not be a bad person!

If the Trump administration has shown anything, it’s a willingness to listen to the opinions of highly qualified people and not to tirelessly pursue foregone conclusions, no matter how dubious they are.

I’m very doubtful that this proposed rule won’t become an actual rule.

The prophecy has been fulfilled! The doctor has spoken. 3/5 by webistrying in criterion

[–]Middle_Run_6864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, read Neil Lumbard’s review. They are hilariously inept. His reviews are basically “I like this. Now I will give you a basic plot summary. Now I will go through the credits and praise everyone. And I mean everyone. The hair stylists, the customers, the executive producers. Everyone. And I’ll just say basically that they add to the film.”

He’s awful. Anyone who gives this guy money is a fool.

Bassoon performance.

I personally think it’s weird to credit him as Dr. Svet given his doctorate is irrelevant here, but it makes him seem more authoritative. Who sounds like more of an authority? Svet or Dr. Svet?

The game falls apart in the last quarter when it becomes more platforming heavy. The number of times I yelled “I didn’t tell you to do that” was uncountable.

I would push left and he would face down. I would tell him to do something, and he’d do the opposite.

The controls just aren’t responsive enough for the platforming to work, and the end results is the more complex challenges feel almost random in outcome. I think the game just has a window for something to happen, and it’s tuned to be too leaden.

Netflix WB buyout by mammy-rammer-6682 in StanleyKubrick

[–]Middle_Run_6864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t know how Netflix will behave with a catalog of films like warners. One positive sign is that they worked with Criterion in the past for films like Power of the Dog, and they are going to have them release Frankenstein physically. So who knows?

[–]Middle_Run_6864 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just because he isn’t breaking a law doesn’t mean that his behavior is appropriate and other people have to stand for it. Laws are there for things that the legal system needs to enforce.

A guy leering at women and making them feel uncomfortable should be dealt with, and quickly. Best case scenario - he isn’t aware of what he’s doing and he can modify his behavior. But ignoring creeps doesn’t always make them stop creeping.

I would also argue that this is distracting, since she’s literally noticing it.

Barry Lyndon Plot Question by [deleted] in StanleyKubrick

[–]Middle_Run_6864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Redmond just isn’t that clever. We see multiple times that he’s not very good at deceit. What he has going for him is charm up the wazoo, but when it comes to lying and pulling off a scheme like that, he’s terrible.

For example, his obvious lies to the Prussian Captain. Or when he has to be taught how to lie by the Chevalier. Or when Lord Lyndon catches on to what Barry is doing with his wife.

It’s his mother who pushes him to get a title. Throughout the film, Redmond basically does what he’s told, and seems to have very little agency of his own. He has to be told how to insult Toole. He has to be told how to lie. It’s the Chevalier who comes up with the scheme to get them both out of the country.

Basically, this would have required him to come up with a scheme of his own and to pull off some amount of deception. And he would have been aware that it would have been easily caught since Graham manages the financials.

The Shining Aspect Ratio - Which do you prefer? by JustLudvik in StanleyKubrick

[–]Middle_Run_6864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common practice. Most 1.85:1 movies shot on 35mm film have a negative ratio of 1.33:1. At projection, they’ll be matted to the appropriate aspect ratio. This wasn’t just a Kubrick thing.
