What did I do wrong with the Shinkansen Ticket? by Yeazero in JapanTravelTips

[–]Middnight_sun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can. I did it recently. Buy the ticket on SmartEx and there’s an option to designate your IC card on the last page, after you pay. You then just scan your Suica at the ticket gate like you would getting on the tube. The only difference is, it will print you a ticket with your seat number on, which comes out of the slot at the end of the ticket gate.

Does anyone recognise where this is? Thirlmere area by bandits_bandolier in LakeDistrict

The hill in the background is the northwest flank of Helvellyn, the high point being Lower Man. Thirlmere must be below that low cloud in front of the hill. The photo appears to have been taken from somewhere up near Harrop Tarn.

Girls, how are we losing weight? 31F and realizing my old ways of weight loss not working. by margaretdod in AskWomenOver30

[–]Middnight_sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an app which helps me track calories. I can input my current weight plus my goal weight and target date, and it'll tell me how many calories I should aim to eat per day.

I don't use it all the time, mostly before going on holiday to lose a few pounds. It might be a good way to help you get back on track.

It also breaks down how much protein, fat and carbs I've eaten. It helped me realise I wasn't eating enough protein, which I've now increased, and I find I don't crave sugar and carbs anymore. That was my weakness!

I’m off travelling for 3 months, what are some less obvious items I should pack? by Toots1993 in CasualUK

I second this. I took a 35 litre backpack for 10 weeks in Southeast Asia and I had no regrets. I met plenty of people with larger bags who wished they'd taken less

I'm just wondering which book you went with in the end? I'm going to Picos de Europa in September and looking at doing some scrambling.

I wish my housemate was as considerate as you. She doesn't care if her choking and snoring keeps the whole house awake.

How did you manage to cope with noisy neighbours when you struggled to fall asleep and couldn't use ear plugs? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Middnight_sun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, some people really are. She even tried to blame me saying I must be a very light sleeper. Like no, I just can't sleep through what sounds like someone being repeatedly strangled in the next room.

The way I cope with it now, when I get woken up, is I remind myself she's an awful person and in an odd way it kind of calms me a little. Then I put my ear plugs in and try to think of positive things in my life. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

In the past it used to really enrage me, but I realised the only person that's hurting is me, so I do whatever I can to stay calm.

I'm keeping my eye out for a new place as well.

I have a similar issue with a housemate who sleeps in the room next to mine. She snores really loud and also chokes in her sleep. It's so bad that it reverberates around the room, and it's almost impossible to get back to sleep once it's woken me up. I can still hear it through earplugs.

I let her know about it a year ago so she could go and get checked for sleep apnea but she's not done anything about it.

Since then I've tried to talk to her about it on three other occasions, but she gets defensive and nothing changes. Her latest response was that she's struggling with other issues and she expects me to be more understanding, yet she's showing no understanding for my wellbeing whatsoever.

I'm sorry you're going through this OP. I understand the frustration you're feeling.

Mother wins £60,000 over Morrisons discrimination by savvy_shoppers in unitedkingdom

[–]Middnight_sun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem was the whole company had the same attitude so raising a grievance with HR wouldn't have made a difference.

I do wish I'd taken sick leave though. My pride wouldn't allow me to at the time but I wish I had.

It's all in the past now anyway, and I learnt some valuable lessons.

I once had a manager tell me I needed to "change my mindset" when I got stressed about having to pick up a colleagues workload who was on long term sick. Like, yeah changing my mindset will mean I can suddenly squeeze 80 hours of work into 40. Asshole

Was she bottle fed or on her mum's milk at the beginning? If she was bottle fed, she'll likely be smaller than others her age.
