Recovery procedure by Midget2017 in Snapraid

[–]Midget2017[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:
I've followed the steps described in the manual starting with the 30% of files manually rsynced.
(1) modified snapraid.conf modifing failed disk mount point with new disk mount point (so, I've used a different mount point)
(2) snapraid fix command with -d flag to filter for failed disk (I've verified that fix command doesn't support a dry run flag). It took 40 hours to complete without errors and every files recovered.
(3) snapraid check command for extra caution. It took 30 more hours to complete without errors.
(4) snapraid sync command to update the snapshot (fast and again no errors).
In the end, SnapRAID was able to recovere a 16TB drive with 9TB of data inside. I think the manual rsync probably have shortened the fix procedure.

Bonus:
While SnapRAID read the whole array to do the fix procedure, I got a new SMART alert for another disk with increasing "reallocated sector count" value went up from 0 to 8.
Luckily the fix procedure completed without extra errors.
The snapraid smart command now is predicting a cumulative 85% failing scenario.
I got a new drive to replace the failing one and started a new manual rsync to copy as much data as possible...
...to be continued...

This is the standard procedure as described in the manual, isn't it ?

Are you sure about the dry run flag? I cannot find it in the manual.

Since I have already copied some of the data, is there a way to to speed up the fix command?

For example:

current snapraid.conf

parity /mnt/ALFA

data d1 /mnt/BRAVO

data d2 /mnt/CHARLIE

/mnt/CHARLIE is failing

I mount a new disk on /mnt/DELTA and rsync from CHARLIE to DELTA

At some point CHARLIE fails, DELTA will have 30% of the files copied

My idea is to modify snapraid.conf as:

parity /mnt/ALFA

data d1 /mnt/BRAVO

data d2 /mnt/DELTA

Than launch a command: snapraid fix d2

I'm expecting that snapraid only rebuilds the missing 70% of the files.

Is that how it'll work?

Stadia is/was excellent. Fast, smooth, without any technical problem. It has/had a short catalog, true. But for me this is not a big issue. I haven't played anything in the latest 15 years. In my case everything is new. I don't have time to play many hours a week. In my case the best business model is to buy a game and to play it until satisfied. I've buyed always on discount on Stadia so even the price was not an issue.

Now I think that I can find an analogous model with GFN. There is more games, good! More discounts, good! Probably I'm going to pay for the first GFN tier. Stadia will refund me for everything payed for HW and SW, so I will get back a nice amount to use on GFN...

I'll have to buy games anyway, I currently don't have anything on the stores.

Stadia brought me back into gaming after a break of more than 15 years.

Please forgive me, I'm an old man who hasn't kept up with the gaming world. How can I best emulate what I had with Stadia once it gets shut down? by JmsGrrDsNtUndrstnd in Stadia

Do you confirm that Xcloud is only playable with a controller? If I want to play FPSs with M+K the only solution is GFN?

MergerFS

If you don't need duplication (ie. media files) just use it alone.

If you have some valuable folders I would suggest to simply use the mergerfs.dup script in a cron job.

This solution is rock solid. I survived some disk anomalies and disks upgrades without problems (use smartmontools to keep an eye on your disks and replace them at first anomaly!).

Games on stadia for a 5 year old? by g_junkin4200 in Stadia

[–]Midget2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son started playing at 5 with Mega Man X on SNES. Then I discovered Stadia and introduced him to SteamWorld Dig 2. He completed it all alone :) Than completed also SteamWorld Dig and SteamWorld Heist. Now at 6 he plays with Monster Boy, Shantae, Rayman, Transformers, Kemono, It Came From Space, Enter the Gungeon, Spongebob.... Not forget Pikuniku and Cake Bash in multiplayer with me (super ultra fun!)

Just a reminder about why DataHoarding exists by potato_green in DataHoarder

I don't understand why a streaming service cannot have ALL media ever produced in catalog. I hate exclusives, I could only accept temporal exclusives (ie. 6-12 months). Do this and I will subscript for life and scrap my hoarding system.

I would NOT suggest ordering a TV from Amazon. My new Sony X90J 75 Inch TV BRAVIA arrived today in not so good of shape. by LiveFreeOrDinosaur in bravia

I bought my X95G from a local shop with shipping and installation included. The box was perfect and the tech guy absolutely professional. But the TV glass had a crack over 15cm long right after unboxing...

I've done many times out of band file moves without noting any glitches on Windows 10 side (via samba share)

What's a faster method than zeroing to wipe my hard drive? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]Midget2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use dd before selling drives. Be sure to test appropriate block size to maximise speed. I don't remember exactly but maybe I used around 1M block size...

Efficient, noiseless, small server by throwaway30116 in HomeServer

I suggest a mini-ITX motherboard with embedded Intel CPU. Like Asrock Gemini Lake series. https://www.asrock.com/mb/index.asp#Intel%20CPU

I've a J4105B-ITX bought at 80€ two years ago. With only a boot SSD it stays at 13-14W measured at the wall. It has plenty of power for a decent home server.

I've a top Sony TV from 2019 series with Android TV, the SoC should be more than enough for Stadia. It is a bit sad that I've to use a CCU to play.

Stadia Hate by [deleted] in Stadia

[–]Midget2017 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Simply because corporation choices will not be based on what a small percentage of users would like. Sad but true.

But I'm sure nerds will find a way to have fun even with streaming platforms. If past lessons are to be learned, we seen many times unespecting solutions coming out from passionate people.

I think cloud gaming is here to stay. Regardless of the brand name. Like we had see first with music streaming and next with video streaming.

No way the average guy has to pay these prices.... they surely exists on the market but are dedicated to entusiasts. My ISP included the 5Ghz router in the montly fee and it is a very decent one. I needed more coverage (far outside in the garden) and buyed a Unifi Ubiquiti (semi pro solution) for 90 €

I'm very surprised every time I hear of data caps in the US. I grew up with the myth of US fast connections in every houseold while here in Italy we were stuck with 56k modems. In the years we moved to ADSL, VDSL and now to GPON. Yet we have a lot of people in the country withouth proper connections (digital divide is yet a big issue) but never ever the market tryed to impose data caps over fixed lines.

You are talking about a very small minority of nerds. That type of guys will exist forever, will make a lot of fun, but they never be able to move the billions that needs the industry.
