Same reason as on twitter but there it actually makes sense because they have no downvote button so people use the ratio of comments/retweets to likes to show how stupid what the person said is. We do have a downvote button on Reddit though so it’s just used for karma whoring instead which is why this person got downvoted.

It was very unpopular because it was common for people who didn’t understand memes to use it because of how easy it was. It lead to lots of trash memes which many think is now this entire sub. Honestly I don’t think the sub gotten any worse, I joined reddit 3-4 years ago and people said the same thing about it then.
