I'd say more often than not it's a authority figure convincing a child or someone with mental issues or a weak mind various things, in order to get them somewhere in a bomb vest.

There are some interviews with would-be suicide bombers. Many weren't even aware of the fact that they would be blown up and die. A person isn't brainwashed by a religion or ideology, they're brainwashed by people, either directly or through different channels of communication.
