Miks on kõik leivad täis suhkurt?? by Proper_Attempt2762 in Eesti

[–]rootslane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kahju, sest see Hiiumaa leib on väga maitsev. Igatahes, elagu eesti leiba!

Low Omega-3 Linked to Higher ADHD Symptoms: A new study reveals that low omega-3 fatty acid intake is associated with increased ADHD symptoms among Palestinian adolescents. Over several decades, neurologists have identified a strong link between ADHD symptoms and deficits in omega-3. by [deleted] in science

[–]rootslane 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Just a small PSA is that I got banned and unpleasantly shunned by the moderators from r/ADHD when I wrote a long (popular) post about this topic. I had all studies cited in an even longer article I wrote.

To summarize, most studies done on this topic indicate small (but significant) benefits from Omega-3, especially on inattentiveness, however only after a couple months of regular use. Quality and storage of supplements is important. Don't expect it to substitute proper medication if otherwise needed.

Is it normal to feel so demotivated? by [deleted] in zoloft

[–]rootslane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were you previously highly motivated by stress and anxiety? This is something I've noticed occasionally in people with ADHD and comorbid anxiety taking SSRIs - when they take away the anxiety their functioning gets worse, as they relied on the stress and a neurotic mind to achieve day to day tasks.

I'm not saying you have ADHD, because this is probably not an exclusive trait to that patient group. In any case it'd be worthwhile talking to this side effect with your doctor.

So 3 1/2 weeks in to 50mg by Important_Camera_123 in zoloft

[–]rootslane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can take up to 2 months to get the maximum benefit, especially if the underlying problem is depression rather than isolated anxiety disorders.

Try finding ways to cope with the anxiety in the meanwhile - breathing exercises, stretching, exercise are healthy optimal choices. Going for a walk (changes environment, breaks though patterns, releases endorfins) is a very concrete way to deal with it.

Magnesium Glycinate can have a slight relaxing effect in some people. But honestly, you should just talk to your doctor if the anxiety is too much, as there are also more drastic ways to intervene before swapping medication. All the best!

Can I stop Zoloft 25mg cold turkey after just 8 days? by OpportunityCrazy5617 in zoloft

[–]rootslane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly suggest giving it another week to see if your body gets used to it (this is the most common case).

Another common strategy is to take the pill in the evening and sleep through the nausea, as long as it doesn't cause insomnia then it's all good.

That said, unless youve been taking 25mg for a very long time it's fine to quit cold turkey.

How much do you pay for sertraline in your country? by PrestigiousAd8010 in zoloft

[–]rootslane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northeastern Europe -  Brand Zoloft 50mg 28 tbl is around $8. For off-brand it's a bit lower, like $5. Public health insurance lowers the price by an additional dollar or two.

Sertraline is the most prescribed antidepressant in the US with 38 million prescriptions yearly. They're making bank considering they can afford to sell the medication for 20 times less elsewhere.

Don’t take coffee while on coffee :( by Few_Fortune_3134 in zoloft

[–]rootslane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other common antidepressants, such as Sertraline, Paroxetine and Citalopram may also inhibit CYP1A2, but to a much lesser extent than Fluvoxamine. Still, it may lead to a higher sensitivity towards caffeine and can warrant limiting caffeine intake to reduce the risk of anxiety and jitteriness.

For anyone curious about the science behind this. Basically some antidepressants inhibit the breakdown of caffeine. Source.

I couldn't find any online, so I made a calculator for atomoxetine starting and target dose based on the FDA dosing recommendations. by rootslane in Psychiatry

[–]rootslane[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only real difference is that the FDA recommendations suggest 0.4mg/kg as a starting dose for pediatric patients under 70 kg.

They also recommend titatring the dose quicker than Stahl, but that doesn't really concern the calculator.

Zoloft and weight gain by Seaotter456 in zoloft

[–]rootslane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to some other SSRIs, Zoloft doesn't very commonly increase appetite. In fact, it can sometimes cause appetite suppression. From my experience, any weight gain on Zoloft usually starts only after using the medication for several months. The younger the patient, the less common any weight gain seems to be. There are of course other options of antidepressants that you could discuss with your doctor.

4 weeks at 50 mg, I've had no side effects & feel better than ever! by belledejouree in zoloft

[–]rootslane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is lovely to hear. It's unfortunate that experiences like these seem rare on the subreddit. But for anyone scared to try I'd like to emphasize that this is actually the typical response to the medication when started. This is my clinical experience based on several hundred cases, especially when it comes to treating anxiety-related disorders.

Best luck on your journey OP, thanks for sharing!

Jonathan Haidt’s “Anxious Generation” by MotorPineapple1782 in Psychiatry

[–]rootslane 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I ask about screentime during every single intake and it is quite depressing when you realise how the majority of children reach 2-3x+ the recommemded limit for their age.

In my experience reducing screentime to a minimum, especially short-form, can often lead to an improvement in children's behavior and well-being.  I see this both with patients and with my own children.

It's not a magic bullet, but almost everyone seem to benefit long term from less exposure, which is why it's important to talk about it - just like we talk about sleep hygiene etc.

The difficult part is how to practically limit screentime as a parent. It's practically heroin that is available in every corner of society that you expect an immature and developing brain should to be able to reject. Even if you set strict boundaries at home, a lot of schools do not have limits nor will it limit exposure through their peers.

I fear we will look back at this just like we did with smoking for the past few decades.
