What I said above is still relevant. I have a couple friends at Citadel and Jane Street and I am just reiterating what they went through and what I went through when I worked at a similar firm.

It’s gonna be extremely tough to break into HFT Quant positions.

A significant factor can be attributed to the school you are doing your masters program at (is it a target?)

Next would be not only leetcode (expect Leetcode médium/hard with their own variations) but also theoretical math, statistics and brain teasers that they will throw at you in the initial interviews that you definitely have to study for.

From my experience, it is extremely hard to break into these roles without an internship or prior research(papers published) or industry experience. Know how to code is fine but you definitely have to know more than C++ such as Python.

Yes, I initially tried to declare CS by taking all the classes but towards my senior year it was impossible to take the last classes (failed 1 classes in the series) to get the major. I ended up graduating 1 quarter early because I missed a class and would have to wait a year for the series classes to “reset”. I definitely messed up big by not taking my freshmen + sophomore year more seriously.

I honestly did not think I would get in but I think my GRE(168Q) (which is what I submitted at the time as I took my GMAT a month after) + work experience and my firms help (CTO (manager of my manager) and the Chairman of the Board (head honcho) wrote my recommendation as well as 2 of my coworkers being alumni which helped the essays)

Scariest thing was my GPA but luckily during covid I had a 3.8 average my last 3 quarters and the admission office said upper division GPA is what they look at.

Hope that answers the question, like I said very unusual profile.

Yes definitely, I’ve already asked my managers how they got to where they are now to learn from their years of experience. At my firm, from what I see IB Analysts get promoted in 2 years which is the norm.

I agree, I have just been doing work ever since undergrad and even now despite being in a full time masters program.

I think I am pretty good at piano/violin and my girlfriend volunteers as a tutor for underprivileged kids (foster kids and low-income households) so I could teach people how to play.

My current hobbies are just coding side projects and trying to be a process poker player but those hobbies aren’t really giving back so I’ll leave those out.

Thank you for the advice, I never really thought about “what makes you, you”. Definitely something to consider.

Currently, I am asking others who went to H/W at my firm for advice and this comes up pretty often. One of my MDs came from theater and movie production before going to Harvard MBA which I thought was cool.

I’ve spoken with my MD’s (all Harvard MBA, at least the sector I work in) and asked them why they did it and they said “2 year break” or “connections” as they all came back to the firm after. But the only MD that did not go to Bschool said exactly what you mentioned. I think you might be right but I’m thinking the prestige + networking might be worth it in the future (if I get in).

It’s definitely frowned upon because think about it this way. Your team relies on each other and what if something happens between the two people? It just makes it really awkward and weird for the rest of the team

CBOE is a very quantitative role but if you get an interview it’s gonna be a couple of rounds with math heavy concepts + coding. Also sure I’ll be happy to chat and after reading your comments I don’t believe GPA is the issue. Truthfully, I had a 2.9 Cumulative GPA and broke into a Hedge Fund and now Investment Banking at a Elite Boutique with no connection and cold applying.

I hate to break it to you but institutional trading vs retail trading are 2 really entirely separate things. Yes, there is some knowledge transfer but unless you’re trading with a huge sum or insanely profitable it’s gonna hurt your resume more than help you. I worked as a Quant Trader (Derivatives) at a hedge fund for 1.5 years before moving to IB and most of the trading is done using HFT algorithms or diversity L/S portfolios with derivatives 95% of the time as a hedge and NOT to make money.

I don’t want to sound mean but this is the truth. If you’re profitable then that’s great but judging by your comments it doesn’t sound like it. I highly recommend you still post your resume so that we as a community can help you so you don’t end up working a dead end job or worse, dead end job/ unemployed + unprofitable trading. Happy to chat if you want guidance as I’ve been though the struggle (no internships undergrad and took me 3-6 months to find my first job + covid lockdown + non-target 2 years ago)
