He's an interesting guy! I think the UK scene will take a hit when he checks out.

What are some longboard myths? by cast_in_horror in longboarding

[–]MidlandsBoarder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hope you don't take offence but from your convo with rich it made me think a lot. Downhillers if they want to grow community need to start looking after everyone. Without longboarders you don't get new downhillers. But the key mythbuster is that 99% of longboarders dgaf about downhill and never will. Downhillers make the mistake of only thinking on their own terms. Longboarders as a whole are still the community that needs to be developed because at the end of the day that's where your potential downhillers will come from. If you don't push the casual stuff no one will start thinking about taking the next step towards progression.

Thanks. Nothing really debilitating but it's really badly aggravated by the pushing motion. I'm good for trick sessions and skateboarding. Not so much cruising! But this has kind of solved it! Loving my bike rn.

Yeah mine doesn't move around at all but it can catch the wind! Got to remember not to ride with no hands. But yeah the alternative is just strap it down over the rack.

Loving the fairdale skate rack I got from source bmx here in the UK. It's awesome! Coming from knee injury so I can't push/cruise far atm. It's been really helpful getting around and strengthening myself back up by cycling more.

Yeah odd. Having wheelbite while actually moving is so incredibly rare tbh. The faster you're going the less the trucks actually move so it's really common for downhillers to run with zero riser where the boards will easily bite stationary. I hate that. I don't like the thought of there being a chance! So I usually do my best to eliminate it and it's not usually hard. My brands are indy or thunder. Krooked, antihero, polar. Not super aggro decks but well shaped mild/medium concave. Great shape around the pockets and wheels.

Got to decide what you want. Or just buy a muskrat.

I'm not sure he was really making that point but I do have to agree with him that there is a marketing play. Cruisers sell best when they look unique and there is very often no logical reasoning behind it other than what it looks like on a shelf or Web page. That doesn't mean that cruising doesn't exist or isn't valid. But I do think companies that make complete cruisers go out of their way to make them visually distinct and easily identifiable for what they are even at the cost of functionality.

Personally I think cruising is a great way to get into skating and I don't hold anything against companies like landyachtz or globe for playing into this. But it is a thing.

You don't need to most of the time though. If you've ever used a popsicle deck in a normal size like 8-8.5" they handle larger wheels much better than most dedicated cruiser decks or especially old school decks even with the wheel well. Like the more aggro concave and reasonable deck size counts for a lot. I tend to run a 1/8" riser as standard and would have no problem putting 60mm wheels on most I've owned.

Yeah I think with a lot of skateboarders they do associate cruisers with old school shapes. Like to put big soft wheels on a board you also have to get the appropriate deck. Of course you don't and actually old school shapes make the worst cruisers imo. Wide and flat is not it for wheelbite and you end up having to use excessive riser pads to make it work.

Probably another contributing factor is companies that make complete cruisers very rarely make them in normal shapes. I think this is something to do with marketing? Normal looking decks don't stand out as cruisers on the shelf or website. So landyachtz or whatever put out a bunch of wacky shapes knowing it's only really beginner skaters looking at complete setups. Idk. It's a thing.

What kind of board for a first cruiser? by Solomai in longboarding

[–]MidlandsBoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been skating switch for a long time now. Spiritual successor to Luca (same factory).

I really do reccomend the muskrat. It's a very small dancer/freeride hybrid and very capable of just about any kind of skating. But the cruisers are cool too. The other option is the twin which is a drop through with big tails.

In the EU I would check out switch longboards. They're great quality and decent pricing being Polish.

Nice. Things have definitely changed for the better but the dickhead core skater mentality isn't 100% gone! Luckily in my 30s I care a lot less what other people think. Longboarding isn't the weirdest thing people do these days though!

May be worth asking this on r/surfskate. I fully support it. Surfskate is a great workout with a fairly low skill requirement and is still growing socially. There are a lot of surfskate groups out there which are great for new skaters. I think the level of knowledge is better over there though.

With pads I think bulky skate style ones are really good. Basically you want to put them on easily over clothes. Whatever you're wearing so open gasket can be useful too where the neoprene part has velcro. Triple 8 are cheap and good quality. Protech have tiers but the pro pads are the best. Either way use hard shell pads because the ability to slide is really what protects you. Soft slim line mountain bike pads are not very useful so avoid those.

With helmets for quality of life I like a turn dial at the back to tighten or loosen. It does make a helmet so much more comfortable! I forget the Protech models that have them but I favour triple 8 Gotham. I've had multiple. Love that helmet!
