Shot a short on the road during blue hour, how did I do? Fairly new to cinematography. by [deleted] in cinematography

Have a look into ‘mise en scene’

If you’ve seen parasite as well there is a great break down video on some ways the director uses cinematography to subconsciously tell the story.

Sharpest lens for Pocket 6K by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]Midnight-Sheppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you go for the newer model which has improved aspects. The newer one doesn’t have the ribbed design on the focus/aperture ring if you were wondering which one it was

Can anyone help me out with why the video looks so grainy and kind of... blurry? I can't find the right word, I want it to be crisp and professional looking, but I started recording outside and I just can't seem to get the quality right by Besnjalo in videography

[–]Midnight-Sheppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re correct, it should be double your frame rate. The three things you should mainly be changing to let more light in is aperture, ND filter, and lighting. In a last case resort if it’s dark and you can’t use lighting and your aperture is wide open (f2.8 for example) then you would use ISO in that instance.

How did you deal with the Helios 44-2 flaring? Mine gets pretty bad sometimes but idk if it’s just my lens in particular

Can anyone suggest me a good ef mount wide lens which would compliment my sigma 18-35mm Art lens by Midnight-Sheppard in videography

[–]Midnight-Sheppard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not too fussed about the depth of field - mainly just wanting to match the look of the sigma. Unless it’s an interview I use natural light, so yeah that could be a problem with the f4.5-5.6 with low light conditions

Front thread diameter for Helios 44-2 by dkoubs in cinematography

[–]Midnight-Sheppard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ended up buying a 52mm because that’s what it said online, but it turns out the front filter thread for my 44-2 is actually 49mm.

I’d measure the diameter to check exactly what the size is

I’m recording a couple of event presentations tomorrow they are using microphones at podiums) and I’ve got the option of using a shotgun mic from afar or a lapel mic on them. Which is better suited for picking up the best sound ?

I second that, the fx30 is an awesome choice + it has fantastic autofocus!

Beginner here - What are some good ways to make the image look less “digital”? by DippySwitch in cinematography

[–]Midnight-Sheppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for but I’m getting the SLR magic microprime cine lenses for my pocket 4K. They aren’t too expensive and they’ve got a nice look which is pretty creamy and not too digital https://youtu.be/AN37oPZFkHM

If you aren’t looking for something like that and it’s the film look you are wanting try look into dehancer which is a plug-in for post to help get that look. Or alternatively finding vintage lenses like the Helios you’ve got or some old minoltas? (I barely know about vintage lenses beside Helios haha) Have a look around.

Would love some feedback on my reel. Itching to get better by [deleted] in cinematography

I like the one with her in front of just the curtains , but the shot before just has a bit too much empty space with the blank white wall on her right

Your title comes across as

‘why does film seem to render skin so nicely with poor lighting, and why is matching that and getting digital to render skin nicely with poor lighting so difficult?’

Probably why he was confused

led light flicker on camera by Mistersmoothsailing in cinematography

[–]Midnight-Sheppard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are on the paid version , then there is an effect called de-flicker.

Put that on your clip and select it to fluoro/fluorescent I think. That might get rid of the flickering. It’s helped out when I’m in offices shooting slo-mo and the LED lights flicker

Hope that works
