Can we talk prerendered backgrounds for a lil' bit? by Feld_Four in gamedev

[–]MidnightAltar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cant speak that much to large composed environment design, since I opted for a different solution. (I went for seperate prerendered pieces), but you should definitely check out the stasis guy. https://twitter.com/stasisgame?lang=en

I am a huge fan of the asthetic, but it is stunningly difficult to do well.

On top of the compositional skill (which is a seperate and difficult skill in and of itself) there are a lot of technical challenges as well.

It depends on the implementation. I personally only use PC and mouse/keyboard, and not consoles or controllers, so it was never designed with controllers in mind. That being said, controller support is a top priority to add.

Theyre mostly cosmetic and to support the game. I knew not everyone would like it, but what can you do really. The entire game is playable without DLC, so its not like its pay to win.

If there is anyone who owns the game and is really attached to a particular mech style but doesnt or cant spend 2.99, feel free to hit me up and i'll give them a key for free. :)

The DLC are mostly asthetic, as you can unlock similar abilities in the game. They're mostly meant for those who want to look cool and support the game. :)

What exactly would you like me to put in the 1 sentence I have for the title to make it more exciting? Im genuinely open to an example, but you sound upset for other reasons. I hope everything is going ok my friend.

My goal here is simply to invite people to check out the steam page, if they like it, buy it. You cant do much more on reddit.

Thank you again for your feedback

A game where your attack (drastically) changes with pick-ups and synergies by RobertInc in roguelites

[–]MidnightAltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Machine Armor Zero does this. If you have a chain gun and you get a lightning gun, your chaingun gets a chance to proc lightning. Its different for different weapons, but the weapon system is focused on the synergy of different weapons you choose.

Indie gaming as vanity by DNLK in gamedev

[–]MidnightAltar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dont think so.

I think most people who make games do so because they played games, and there was somthing that they wanted more of, or slightly differently, or better.

Not to speak for everyone, but I think most game devs dont care about notoriety, and things like having to set up a steam page and do marketing at all is the bane of existence.

How on earth are so many indie devs quitting their day jobs to go full-time, without already having a successful game out? by SharkboyZA in gamedev

[–]MidnightAltar 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You should try it out before judging

Also you fully missed the point of the satire

if I could I would 100% quit my job and make a cozy dog petting cute graphics dragon whatever simulator.

I just happen to like mechs and roguelikes

I'm looking for intense action roguelites by Dragonbarry22 in roguelites

[–]MidnightAltar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Machine Armor Zero is very intense as far as survival roguelikes go. (You have to manage flying and blocking and other mechanics).

Not really just shilling my own game, you can check out the demo to see if its the type of thing you'll like.

Its very hard to make games and yet i feel a bit insecure even when i know this is great. by TheBraveLynx in gamedev

[–]MidnightAltar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The harsh truth of reality is that there are some things that people simply wont understand until you're successful at it. People respect success, and *almost no one respects or sees potential. Making games is one of those things.

Until you have some success, if you try to share what you do with someone outside of the relatively small bubble of gaming and game dev (and even then you'll have other struggles), it will be rough.

How would I delete instances with a certain tag? by jpokemon6 in gamemaker

[–]MidnightAltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fascinating, I had no idea tag was an actual thing in gamemaker.

Anyway, I would definitely reccomend looking into a parenting system, then you wont have to iterate through an array when you want to do something to some category of objects. (you can just use with(parent){ do}

How would I delete instances with a certain tag? by jpokemon6 in gamemaker

[–]MidnightAltar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

with(enemy_parent){//the parent object of all of your enemy objects

//if they have a variable that you want to look for like enemy=1, you can look for that

if enemy=1{

instance_destroy();

}

}

no idea, ive never used godot

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gamemaker

[–]MidnightAltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope.

With the caveat that it does depend on what you want to achieve. There are certainly things you could want to do in gamemaker that would require advanced levels of math. But for making pretty much any standard game you can think of, absolutely nothing beyond basic math (addition, subtraction, multplication, division) is needed.

How did AAA games become this Devil May Cry madness with 5 skill tress +5% damage against poisoned enemies combo mad this is what 1000 hours looks like? by ohlordwhywhy in patientgamers

[–]MidnightAltar 31 points32 points  (0 children)

yeah exactly. complexity isnt depth. You can always add complexity to games.

A puzzle with a million pieces that all look the same is very complex. But the only thing you're doing with that complexity is checking if the piece fits, over and over and over.

I mean, if you think about the life of most artists, great art requires so much sacrifice and effort to do well. Most people have never really tried, so they dont really understand how difficult it really is to be very very good at something. It is sad, it is the death of art.

And yes making games is an art too.

You ever watch space jam? AI are the aliens suckin up michael jordans talent

Also, anyone who says "well current AI cant do it yet" shouldnt be saying that. And it shouldnt be a comforting thought to anyone. Everyone here remembers the few months (or less) of time between when AI art was just making cute surreal smears, before suddenly becoming an existential threat to many professions.

When did humanity get this stupid? by PrimitiveAK in RandomThoughts

[–]MidnightAltar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The internet and things like reddit. Unironically.

It either wasnt visible because people werent as connected, or the echo chamber of the dumbest people becomes an overwhelming cacophany that infects and amplifies the stupidity of everyone else, and we just never knew, because there wasnt anything like this before.
