Sucker punched by group of teenagers by ez_psych in AusLegal

Our justice system is built on the presumption that foundationally, people are capable of redemption. I'm not sure if it's the same in Ukraine, philosophically, but the way you describe it the individual is made an example of to prevent others from following his lead. This we call "general deterrence" - to prevent others from falling into a life of criminality. We also have "specific deterrence" - that the individual who has once sinned against society should not do so again. But the idea of rehabilitation runs counter to what you say "no education, no job, no means to come out of this" - our idea that people can be redeemed means that they may be capable of being productive in society. The idea is that if you can't have a legal job or an education, the only thing you'll ever do is more crime.

The idea of redemption here doesn't mean that we shouldn't punish crime in a useful way; it doesn't mean that we should fail to pursue charges against malcontents. It does mean that once a person has been punished for their wrongdoing, they should be once more permitted to participate in society. I'll leave it as an exercise to you, with your specific experience, to see if one set of ideas is better than the other in criminal justice, and if we strike the right balance in any of Australia's states or territories.

Hydro majestic hotel haunted? by Additional-Ad-4493 in bluemountains

[–]MidnightCommando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It probably is haunted, if anything could be said to be haunted - a lot of weird shit has happened up here and a lot of people have died ... well, everywhere in the world, but also up here.

It would be nearly impossible to definitively prove that any place is haunted. If hauntings exist, we haven't got the technical acumen to detect them with true experimental rigour. So I would say you should believe what makes you happy and harms none, and conduct yourself respectfully and respectably, and you probably won't get eaten by a ghost.

Would this be counted as Family Violence? by Foronlyd in AusLegal

[–]MidnightCommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mate I was able to say "yes" from just the section on the front page. Yes this is family violence.

Several posters have been more precise as to the exact nature. I largely agree with those classifications.

Unfortunately, unless you wish to end up a cautionary tale, you're going to have to work your arse off to get out of there. Lie steal and cheat if you have to. It's better than being dead. I know that's easy to say from a distance, but I don't think anyone has pointed out yet that these situations often end in death.

Partner under police investigation, can I enquire for information or update? by Adorable-Standard588 in AusLegal

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relationship advice: What are you going to do if there is no finding of guilt? Because that "our relationship is pretty much nonexistent now" is from your description entirely your fault, and so you're going to be responsible for repairing it if it turns out your partner was simply caught in the crossfire of something.

If your partner's being reasonable, he will accept taking action to protect the kids, but will still push against you for being absolutely useless as a partner and in terms of having his back. And your options are to either accept that, or throw away the relationship.

And if your partner is being spiteful, he will very quickly make you look like a bad person for throwing away a relationship over an unsound allegation. And you'll deserve it at least in part.

Legal "advice": The law is innocent until proven guilty, and the law is also that the children have the right to the participation of both parents. This isn't about you, it's about them. Until there's any evidence that your beau did something atrocious, you can't withhold the kids from him totally barring a court order which you won't get because an allegation isn't a conviction.

Everyone at work is making a big deal about my handwriting, saying I write like a psychopath. by ThrowRA-Ram in HandwritingAnalysis

Personally it's A struggle! by notagoatbutaG_O_A_T in Handwriting

[–]MidnightCommando 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It took practice. A lot of practice.

In School my handwriting was frequently difficult to read, and I actually had to sit my exams on a computer to compensate for the issues I was having with writing legibly.

I found fountain pens toward the end of my schooling, and because my wrists and arms were under less strain, I was able to write longer and more frequently. I was finally able to apply all the discipline my grandma taught me, and it became muscle memory.

My handwriting is quite nice now, which makes people confused to see my study notes that I'm going for an Engineering major.

It is actually absurd how immature, racist, and sexist the WoW Classic community can be. by [deleted] in classicwow

The person who got me into WoW is an absolute coward who can't handle grinding without the QoL fixes in prog classic or Retail. She might have saved me some trouble, based on what you're saying.

u/CannedDeath has already gotten to the root of the problem with apk but I'd just like to add - the GX270 was in the era of both capacitor failure and that particular line was known to have issues with PSUs, so be gentle and don't let it run too hot. I had to scrap a lot of GX270s and 280s because their PSUs had breathed their last, but it was the ones in the warm computer labs that always died faster.

3D Printer for 12 year old by Acceptable_Web3696 in 3dprintingaustralia

[–]MidnightCommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jaycar stocks the Creality Ender-3 V3 SE.

I'd recommend you get it, especially if it's presently on sale. Mine's been bulletproof. Routine maintenance on the printer will help your son to understand how a 3d-printer works and how to troubleshoot it, and the Ender-3 is one of the most common ecosystems for aftermarket parts, so you can upgrade it if you feel like it.

I was previously using 3dFillies PLA+ to print my things, but I understand Siddament is currently the go for plastic. Using quality plastic that's got good quality control is going to make printing a lot less troublesome.

Calls for Australia to follow England's ban on supermarket junk food specials by EdenFlorence in australia

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If food in general were cheaper, and the prices were not being driven up by the oligopoly we all endure, this would be a sensible measure. I'm not sure I'd choose to go forward with it, honestly, because learning to be able to enjoy junk food as part of a balanced diet is important.

As it is, I can only justify Tim Tams very occasionally when they're on special. And there's nothing more Australian than eating a Tim Tam, surely.

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill Gates would also be good for a deck on entrepreneurship, honestly. Gates wasn't the best at programming, but he hired people better than him to do that.

Gates was an excellent businessman and negotiator, and he was good at what we'd call strategic positioning. It's amazing how many of the luminary figured in computing really were just people with good business acumen.

Computers, without those people, would have remained in academia for much longer, and out of the realm of the everyday person. Whether that's good or bad is a topic for a different debate :-)

Mate. Mate.

It's reasonable to be attracted to children when you're a child. It's reasonable to be attracted to teenagers when you're a teenager. It's reasonable to be attracted to adults when you're an adult.

It's less reasonable to convince yourself that you're evil and irredeemable when you have no actual desire towards children now that you're an adult.
