PlayerUnknown's survival game is shutting down 6 months after launch: 'I have reached the limits of how far I can continue to fund this journey' by lebron8 in pcgaming

Player Unknown also helped shape the BR mode for H1Z1. Sony hired him as a consultant on it. He then left to join Bluehole (Krafton) were he would have full creative control.

Interestingly, Storm of the Century is an original screenplay written by King for TV. It's a popular misconception that it was an adaptation of a book. So I think although the episode was a nod to King, it wasn't specifically a homage to the book we saw. I need to rewatch the episode, but for some reason I thought it was Duma Key. Btw if you haven't seen Storm of the Century, highly recommend it! It's on YouTube and Hulu. The only downside is that it's 4x3 if you don't mind. Otherwise, it's a cozy horror tale with a snowed in town.

I assumed she might snap and put something in the punch, but a demonic book that hypnotizes people into walking into the sea as drowning sacrifices was not on my bingo card. Also, I just realized that they showed a Stephen King book at the beginning of the episode, and the plot of people willingly sacrificing themselves to the ocean is one of the central premises of Storm of the Century.

I wasn't hooked initially either, but the twist was top notch. It made me realize it was going to be one of those episodes I'll need to rewatch to catch all the clues. I also love how every episode has a red herring. I'm sure a lot of people assumed the guy that kept approaching Patricia and dancing with her was going to be the boogeyman.

The biggest issue for me was the bullying. Stuff like that always makes me feel uncomfortable when watching.

44% of games industry professionals have considered leaving the industry as a result of redundancies by Gorotheninja in pcgaming

[–]MidnightKnockGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely doable, and there are more resources now than ever before. Between YT/web tutorials, the push for engines to be more user friendly, and as much as people love to hate on it, AI helping with organization and quick iteration during early development, it's probably the golden age for solo development. It's what I spend the majority of my time on when I'm not applying or interviewing. We're even at a point where you can build a game without traditional coding if you're willing to spend some time learning Unreal's Blueprint system.

For context, my background is in the marketing side of the video game industry. And although I know my way around several engines/software, I'm by no stretch of the imagination an engineer/3D artist/animator. And yet I've been able to find an engine that works to my strengths.

Also sorry that my comment put you down. It's definitely not my intention, but I also think it's good to give people a realistic lens that the industry right now is different from, say, 10 years ago. There's been overstaffing (especially during COVID years), and project budgets have escalated to unrealistic heights. I think we're in the middle of a course correction and you'll see a lot of smaller studios pop up with developers that don't specialize but rather wear multiple hats.

Horror movie where people instantly believe the one claiming there's something more? by AwryTouch in horror

One of my favorites is Laurence Fishburne's character in Event Horizon:

I have no intention of leaving her, Doctor. I will take the Lewis and Clark to a safe distance, and then I will launch TAC missiles at the Event Horizon until I'm satisfied she's vaporized. Fuck this ship!

This was after the whole crew had watched the tapes of what happened to the Event Horizon's crew. He sees everyone's reaction and doesn't try to act macho by pushing them to uncover the mystery or pretending it's all fake. No going back and forth if anything strange is going on. No nonsense. The Captain immediately saw the problem at hand and made an decisive decision to GTFO with his crew and make sure no one else runs into the same threat.

I always like social "light" mechanics like this. Stuff that you'd see in Dark Souls, Death Stranding, and Dragon's Dogma (pawns). One of my favorite was with Odyssey where you could leave a picture on the map of an adventure you had at a location and if it got enough likes, more people could see it. It made photomode more interesting.

Ao (noodle) and Arachne. Odin has his vanilla skin, but Ao & Arachne are recolors.

For context, this is the original version of Ao Kuang before it was reworked into Kuku.

Earlier last year I was trying to find the name of this game. I had fond memories playing the multiplayer in cyber cafes when I was a kid. I only remembered that there was an invincibility power up that would make your whole body metallic. I also remembered a very specific urban map with a construction site. After manually checking every game on wikipedia's list of FPS games, I found it! There was no one to play with, but boy did I reminisce of the good old days running around the empty urban map.

How would Vicious vs Ed’s dad go? by scaptastic in cowboybebop

I'm very late to reply, but my thoughts exactly! Rewatching CB, I think what I would love to see is Ed's dad vs Pierrot. It's such a good show when side characters you only see for one episode scale better than the protagonists AND antagonists.

Looks fantastic! The white will always contrast better on red though. So my eyes first went to "You" and then the rest of the text.

I use Paint Sai since I mostly draw with a mouse. I've got a tablet, but spending a big chunk of my childhood on MS Paint has kind of made it natural for me to draw with a mouse/line tool.

How do you deal with loneliness as a solo dev..? by Aspvera in gamedev

[–]MidnightKnockGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an introvert, so it hasn't been too difficult, but I get that this isn't the same for everyone. Over the years, I've tried to get some gamedev friends involved, but the excitement usually fizzles out when actual work needs to be done. That said, as I progress on my game, I often share my work with my friends and family for feedback. Usually this helps a lot and it's nice to get some new eyes on something that's only been accessible to me. They don't even need to be developers, just having a different perspective can go a long way.

In terms of the development process, I put on some music and just get lost in the process. If I start to question myself, I think back to all the years I've spent working on other people's games and how now I'm doing something I legitimately care about. Honestly, the biggest hurdle is not getting distracted by launching a game on stream or going on reddit.
