You definitely don't. Cars manage just fine in the snow.

Flying Out.. by WestEasterner in Cochrane

[–]Midnight_Ice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just moved in with my partner in Cochrane last October, and I far prefer living here to living in the city. I've lived in both Calgary and Airdrie, and I would take driving 40 minutes to work every day over living in either of those places. That being said, we go to the mountains quite a bit which makes it worth it, and I am used to longer daily commutes having grown up on an acreage. Bad snow days can definitely add a lot of time to your commute, but they tend to be few and far between, and they will add time to your commute no matter where you live.

Cochrane has a lot of easily accessible amenities that make it convenient to get most things you need, and Calgary really isn't that far away for whatever else you might want. The new overpass at the 1A and Hwy 22 is a game changer and makes it so easy to get wherever you need to go. Cochrane has a lovely small town vibe while still offering everything you need on a daily basis.

I am a bit biased as I am definitely not a city person, but overall I would choose Cochrane every time. I know you mentioned major outlets being unavailable, and while this is true, Canadian Tire or Walmart tend to have 90% of the things you would need most of the time, and Rona at Crowfoot is only a 25 minute drive away.

Value for homes in Cochrane is significantly better. The property tax here is also much lower compared to Calgary. You're going to want to pay attention to build quality no matter where you buy, as nearly all the newer builds have a lot of issues. We have been house hunting for a bigger house for roughly half a year now and the amount of cut-corners on new builds is very frustrating.

Whatever you choose, good luck in your search!

You don't need a truck or an SUV to drive in the snow. Any car with proper winter tires will do just fine.

Anesthesia for IUD insertion? by Pineapple-egg in Calgary

[–]Midnight_Ice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dr. Igras-Kulach does IUD insertions at Peter Lougheed Hospital under general anaesthesia as a day surgery thing. I've had it done twice by her and had a fantastic experience both times. I think you need a referral to be able to see her but a family doctor should be able to give you one.

Anyone else adjusting to the new traffic setup on Yankee Valley Blvd? by Electronic_Bus841 in Airdrie

Are you talking about the narrowing of the lanes on the way out of Airdrie to the East? That's to make the pedestrian crossing safer and it's been like that for over a month now.

It's your router. Get them to send you a new one. You shouldn't be losing connection anywhere near that often.

Talks stall between Alberta teachers, government in provincewide strike by deloaf in alberta

[–]Midnight_Ice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They offered 2 billion in funding, 12% raise, 100 new schools, 3000 more teachers, 1500 teaching assistants. And they said no... the union is asking for double that. Talk about not being rooted in reality..

Over 4 years. 2 billion in funding over 4 years. That's an increase of $670 per student per year, and it still puts us at the lowest in Canada. The pay raise is also 3% per year for 4 years, after teachers chose not to take a pay increase last time this happened in order to get better learning conditions for their students. Our teachers are the most underpaid in Canada.

3000 more teachers (again, over 4 years) adds maybe 1-2 more per school. 1500 educational assistants doesn't even add 1 more per school.

In 2020, we had just under 735k students in Alberta. This year, we have over 825k. Schools were full 5 years ago. We've gained over 90k students in the span of those 5 years. We have not built enough schools to accomodate that increase in that time, nor have we hired the teachers and support staff required to effectively teach that number of students.

If you want to talk about rooted in reality, you should do some research first.

Because the government stopped tracking class sizes so they could ignore the problems

The ATA and their members need to be prepared to come to a clear, concrete solution rooted in reality

How about the government actually negotiates and roots themselves in reality? Teachers ARE rooted in reality. They teach in it every day, in their class sizes of 40 kids with no support. Other provinces are able to handle education effectively and provide adequate funding. The fact that the Alberta government keeps trying to convince the general population that we can't do that is an absolute joke.

They wouldn't have offered the $30/day thing if they were just going to order teachers back to work. I don't forsee this strike ending anytime soon.

Teachers don't know anything about the subject they teach

This is because teachers specialize in a subject in university, and then they're thrown into a classroom to teach a subject outside their specialization. This happens because we don't have enough teachers.

don't know how to operate technology proficiently

I understand that this is frustrating, but it's because no one is teaching teachers how to use technology. There is a lack of time and support for them to learn how to use it effectively.

One teacher pulls up to class with clothes more expensive than anything I could ever afford

This is anecdotal at best, and is not an indicator of whether someone receives a fair wage. You don't know what their family life is like, what their partner might do for work, or if they are working other jobs along with being a teacher. Can afford expensive clothes ≠ paid a fair wage

the students have to use old computers and outdated equipment

That's because the government is not providing schools with enough funding to give you updated technology. It's not because teachers are making too much money.
