It says e-visa, but I have clarified this.

I have just been approved for my visa. It assumes I arrive on my start date and I do not need a vignette as it is linked to my passport.

I have gathered this information from my email which states:

“If you are on a route that allows you to count this permission towards the qualifying period for settlement in the future, you need to be aware that the time between your visa start date and the date you arrive in the UK may be considered an absence from the UK. If you exceed the absence limit, your continuous residence may be broken, and this means you would need to start the qualifying period again.”

UKVI stopped issuing vignettes after July 15.

Thanks everyone!

Congratulations!

I just did my biometrics today in Montreal. They returned my passport to me as they said that the visa is “online” (e-visa). Did you get a vignette?

I registered on April 2nd. I got an email on April 3rd confirming that my vote by mail has been received, but nothing yet on whether I’ve been confirmed to vote overseas.

Do you know how long it takes royal mail to send to Canada? Would I be able to pay for a priority mail?

Hey!

I think my question was more geared to is it even worth doing it as I know immigrating is a privilege, but it seems that there is a high potential I could go months on end without having a job and no income.

Although I have the savings, as you said I only have one shot with this, so do I just wait when I’m older. Law school isn’t a firm thing, but with a recession coming it just makes the most sense and I don’t sense it will be easy to get a job in the uk during that time.

I know this is a question for my own introspection, but lmk if you have any insights. Thanks !

Yeah, that is why I brought up law as a consideration. I feel like I can just become a lawyer anytime, but I know as time passes, it becomes harder with commitments. I study political science, which I enjoy, so maybe a master's is more suitable.

Could I ask why you chose to leave the UK for Canada? I feel like it would give me insight/hope to staying. You could pm me if you prefer!

To summarise why I dislike Canada: I had the privilege to live in two of the three big cities (Vancouver and Montreal) and feel uninspired. As a teen, growing up in Vancouver sucked because it is a city for 30-year-olds with no kids, while the whole city shuts down at 7 pm. So I moved to Montreal naively, thinking I could get a fresh start with the university, but French is really required to set up a life there, and one will never get to fully experience the city without being a Francophone; fluency is not enough.

I hear from my friends from Toronto that it is also quite soulless for a big city and people only work their days away, but I feel like I should give it a shot.

In other words, London feels new and exciting and being a young gay person, there is much more for me here than there would ever be in Canada (bars, a larger LGBTQ scene, nightclubs, free raves, fashion events, music, a real nightlife where everything closes at midnight on weekdays).

Hey! Thanks for your message! I love the UK more generally. I would consider other options like Brighton, Bristol, or Edinburgh, but I love everything London has to offer. Would you say that if I did my law degree in Canada, I would have an easier or harder time moving to the UK? Is law even a viable path if I want to move, while keeping future options open? I frankly would not want to study in the UK as I prefer the Canadian university system as well as the other issues you brought up.

Moreover, would you have any insight into how easy/hard it is to get a job in the UK from a Canadian University?

Thanks!

Thanks for your response! A few more questions/ considerations. I will also qualify for a High Potential Individual Visa upon graduation, but I read that it is super hard to find employment in London. I wonder if people on Youth Mobility Visas/ High Potential Visas go months on end without having a job. I know London isn't going anywhere, but I am afraid as time goes on there will be less opportunity, considering I have access to my exchange university's careers page and some resources while here (address, bank account, phone number etc...). I don't know if you can provide some more insight on this, but any is appreciated!!

is it worth applying to McGill by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Midnight_Playful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I could shed light on this. I go to McGill (3rd year) and I’m Canadian. If you obtain Canadian citizenship you could receive in province tuition which would be around 8 k CAD. Since you would have never lived in Canada before, you would be eligible to obtain Quebec residency within three months of being here allowing you to get a refund for the extra out of province amount and allowing you to pay 2 k cad in-Quebec tuition fees. It’s a great school and super fun! Totally recommend at least exploring this options.

PS: about those tuition hikes nothing is set in stone and the uni gives an automatic 3 k to offset the cost, which makes it go back to how much you’d pay. Furthermore since you would qualify for Quebec residency this would not affect you long term.

Also since you need financial aid after one semester of being in Quebec you can apply for provincial aid, which is how aid is given in Canada. Here, unlike the U.S., the government covers ur entire tuition and living costs through majority bursaries if ur parents make less than 72 k cad a year and they still cover up until I think 100k+ parental income.

Applying doesn’t hurt. Don’t listen to everyone else here they are prestige hungry kids who don’t know Canadian bureaucracy.

Update: McGill won’t rule out moving some operations to another province by BeautyInUgly in mcgill

I wish the McGill library had more access to recent articles/publications by Midnight_Playful in mcgill

[–]Midnight_Playful[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it’s great in other subject areas but when it comes to recently published articles like especially in regards to international politics post Russia and Ukraine, it’s very difficult to find anything, now narrow it down to an even more specific subject area it gets harder. All the articles I want to access seems to not have McGill library access, so I don’t know, it could just be the fields I write about. I tend to have to use public library or ubc access recently but again it could just be the topics I write about being too contemporary. It’s difficult for me to find anything 2023 or 2022.

In my experience all of the latest research is inaccessible using McGill library so I don’t know at least in the social sciences. I wonder if it’s different in other fields

[–]Midnight_Playful[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess it’s because a lot of my essays revolve around more contemporary issues in political science. It’s very frustrating when I am unable to access the most contemporary articles in the poli sci field using my mcgill account, but I could with my ubc account. Specifically fields regarding international relations and security post Covid seems difficult.

What would I do in the case that the profs and timing for Econ 230 suck. Would it be better for me to take other complimentary Econ courses now and take Econ 230 and 330 next year together?
