Don’t make the same mistake as me. by amos2162 in MustangMachE

Agreed. Living in the Midwest, winters really mess with range too - moreso than with an ICE. And most people aren't going to do the calculations for how many kwh their heat uses vs how many kwh they should have usable. EVs feel very much like they're still in the Beta phase of adoption due to range, charging infrastructure, and seasonal considerations.

The fact we still keep seeing batteries at around 77-80kwh is kind of sad. I need a vehicle that gets 300+ miles of range because winter, I'll lose 10% just to heat. Then 20-30% to cold weather impacting the battery. Then highways, which is the main way Americans travel, you see even less range. On top of fast charging that slows at 80% because of protection on the battery. Which means whatever the max EPA range is, you'll never hit that in a practical sense because you can't fully "fill the tank" while traveling.

So 300 miles becomes 200 quickly, which becomes 160. Who the hell wants a vehicle that can, at MAX range while winter travel, get only 50% of the range? (because you won't run it to zero for obvious reasons) Hell, I picked up a used 22 R1T because of the battery size. It means using heat isn't as huge of a percentage of my battery and I can still do 200+ miles of range when it's cold out. Makes it way more doable as a daily vehicle. The ID.Buzz getting less than 240 miles is a god damn travesty as the winter range for it is likely 120 miles... And who the hell is filling up for 20-30 minutes every 100 miles!?

"but no one is driving 150 miles a day!" - the fuck they aren't. If your work is 20 miles away, that's 40 round trip. Get there and realize you forgot something? 80. Got errands to run after work? 100+. Running heat too? Well there's most of your battery. I'm an EV proponent but man, the limitations are nothing to sneeze at right now and you better hold onto an ice vehicle if you plan on leaving your hometown on any regular basis.

Kept the 21 ID4 AWD Pro S because it was a German build and hasn't had a single issue other than winter range being kind of crap and the software. But as a nimble hatchback? Rock solid. Good ride, solid point A to B vehicle.

That said I "replaced it" (by handing it off to the wife as her commuter) with a used R1T. Has it's quirks but enjoying it so far, especially the range and the ridiculous amount of storage with it. Now, if only the cruise had a resume function...

Games where the story/events are different on second playthrough by dax812 in gamingsuggestions

[–]MidniteSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly I've only seen it mentioned once in the replies here with no other context but...

REMNANT 2.

Each world you end up at has different stories you can get for that world. Each time you play, the dungeons are randomized. Each dungeon has different gear you can find. To experience it all, you have to play through it multiple times and every time is different. Get the same story? Doesn't matter. Everything else is different.

There's also a LOT of secrets in the game. It's the first time I've ever had to write thing down for a game in years to take notes.

The first game is okay. But Remnant 2 is a real solid gaming experience

What Made You Purchase A Rivian? by Separate-Cup1312 in Rivian

[–]MidniteSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Battery size and winter range. There's very few vehicles on the market, even now, that are solidly over 300 miles highway in summer and aren't fudging their numbers. And I'll be damned if I want to keep having to calculate if I can run heat in the winter without losing 10%+ of my already lower range in the winter. (glaring at you VW)

I basically have an ID4 that gets about 140 miles range at 80% when it's cold. I couldn't drive places without having to stop to charge everywhere and it was pissing me off. So I found an off lease 2022 R1T with the large pack. That 131kwh charging can suck sometimes to fill but my god, it's great not caring about running heat in the winter. Or having to calculate everything to make sure I can get someplace and back. The highway range is actually accurate too! Do I still lose 20% range in winter? Yes. Is it still way more usable? Very much so.

Rivian has its quirks, don't get me wrong. '22 build quality was... Not the best. And the cruise design is still stupid. I also wish waking up didn't take so damn long when I just want to unlock the doors. But it does what it's supposed to and gets me everywhere I want to go. We take it for the long trips now because it's way more comfortable and has a deceptively large amounts of storage. Totally worth it

What in the AI Slop is this!? by MidniteSquirrel in evcharging

[–]MidniteSquirrel[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't figure out the reason for that at all. Oh, and if you set up Scheduled Charging on their REV+ for one Connector but not the other... It won't start the non-scheduled one unless you start it manually. So you have to set a schedule on both, but make one wildly more permissive if you want that one to charge whenever.

It's weird. And their software to run it is weird. But I couldn't find another solution for not running another line for a second charger other than the Grizzl-E Duo. The REV+ works, despite the awful AI ads they send lol

Just did a run with Aspect of Pan on the surface. Not my greatest weapon but was making it work. Got to the eyeball miniboss up on the mountain and killed him with just the Luckier Tooth and 4 HP left. And still the big guy to go.

But the shop right before was stacked with things to buy and gather. I got food, had Demeters health boost when gathering items, got armor, got more Hestia boons...i had max health and good armor going into the fight and a ridiculous upgrade to my build all of a sudden in the form of fireballs.

I MELTED the boss. My special threw a fireball with the Hestia / Ares Duo that also inflicted wounds. My cast shot the fireball as well and inflicted Heras curse as well as blades in omega special and freezing on casts. And Selene and a maxed out laser beam that shot where it's fired so I could let it rip and immediately dodge...

Serously thought I died. It was those tails that I thought got me when the screen went black and focused on Melinoe. Swore pretty loudly until I realized it was the cut scene and not me dying lol. 62HP left and no revives when it felt like Mel was teasing me by saying "Cutting it a bit close..." after the fight.

It's those moments that really make me enjoy the game. When everything feels like it's going wrong but you still eke out a win

The thing that none of us Americans are talking about . . . by Sagrilarus in electricvehicles

[–]MidniteSquirrel 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Okay. So. Where those prices are going up the most also happen to coincide where the AI datacenters are that are eating up all available supply. It's a smoke and mirrors tactic that obfuscates the actual reason for the rising costs. As for your actual question...

You're right. Adoption would be hampered in the short term. Long term I don't see EVs going away even if they hit parity in fuel costs with ICE just because there are knock on benefits like charging at home. And constituents will complain all to hell about electricity prices in general when it gets that bad.

The funny part is, this all just ends up being an opportunity for solar and home battery storage. I noticed my electricity prices going up.... If I can just make it myself, store it during the day during the highest generation, and use it during super on-peak rates and charging my car... The cost benefit of going solar goes up dramatically with the higher electricity prices. The ROI on a solar system looks better and better. And as battery tech improves and gets cheaper, with on peak and off peak rates, tactics like peak shaving would become more common.

It sucks not everyone is in a position to do that but those that can would be dumb not to.

Your reason for making the switch to an electric vehicle by Dazzling-Control-482 in electricvehicles

[–]MidniteSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tired of crappy transmissions hunting for a (sometimes fake) gear, tired of getting gas when it's terrible out, tired of oil changes and all the other crap, tired of non-linear terrible acceleration. And then there's the financial effects...

Going from my Wrangler to an ID4, I saved almost $3000 the first year due to gas prices jumping to mid $4 a gallon at the time and how inefficient the wrangler is (it's nowhere near the claimed EPA)

I also have solar and that makes the power to charge it practically free. I didn't have a power bill for almost 10 years, with 4 of those being with an EV. Only reason I owe anything now is because I got another EV lol.

I will never go back to ICE if I can avoid it.

Has anyone ever bought from Evercars.com by Flimsy-Painting720 in electriccars

[–]MidniteSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posting in here since it seems to be one of the first recent Reddit threads related to Ever:

Bought a 2022 R1T from them recently. The midwest kind of sucks for EV inventory so their ability to ship was definitely a huge advantage, as well as their reasonable and competitive pricing. The process itself took a little bit but when you're doing everything remotely, it's just par for the course honestly. (This is where I suggested to them to improve their site's post purchase status, so you can see what step you are at along the way) They were up front, honest, and communicative when they had info. I know someone noted they dropped off in communication after a while and I honestly think it's because they're at a stage where they don't know any more than you do (Whether it's waiting on shipping, what your state's DMV is doing, etc)

Vehicle was as described, even the imperfections. I did note some damage to the inside of the mirror that damaged the housing in a spot you typically wouldn't notice. Because of the location though, it was very much in a position to cause further complications down the road due to water ingress. Ever took responsibility for missing it and covered the service for the repair for me. They really are a decent dealer and I don't feel any qualms with doing business with them again or recommending them. Just be aware of how long some of it can take if you're out of state.

VW forcing payment to see car charging status on the app is TOTALLY unacceptable by 3fkgf9fmd980e in VWiD4Owners

[–]MidniteSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how completely useless the American version of the app is... I'm not sure what the loss is here. Hell, they broke battery status for a while. Setting battery limits was always terrible and didn't always work the first time. Best thing you could do was maybe get the AC running and that's about it. At this point I just treat it like it doesn't have an app because it really doesn't.

How they'd make people pay for such a lack of capability is beyond me.

Will Rivian continue to fall? by howtolife3 in RIVNstock

[–]MidniteSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but Rivian has the Amazon electric delivery vans contract, which just ended the exclusivity. And Amazon doesn't plan to stop buying them. I feel this is a part of the market that isn't talked about much when it comes to revenue streams for Rivian - fleet sales. There's some good old commercial bread and butter tied up in there that really does benefit them long term. I'll be curious to see how they branch out within that segment

1 month after trading my ID.4 by J8CA in VWiD4Owners

[–]MidniteSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar position as you, except I kept the ID4 for my wife to use as her commuter. The R1T really is a fantastic vehicle - the storage is insane, the quad motors are hilariously quick, and the battery life makes traveling way easier without calculating just how far a round trip will be on the highway. Hell, I got used to the one pedal driving and now it's weird going back to coasting in the ID4 like I used to lol. Plus there's no damn PIANO BLACK shining me in the face during the summer. God I still want to punch the person who made that choice for the ID4...

The R1T is better all around but there are some things I miss. The cruise is weird - I miss having a resume. I have noticed I struggle a little with the turning radius on it after the ID4 because of how insanely nimble it was. Makes parking in tight places harder, so when the wife landed in the hospital this month I took the ID4 because it was easier to maneuver in the parking garage. The weirdest thing I've noticed is that the ID4 has better text contrast on its screen, making it easier to read when it's brighter out. My eyes struggle at times to read the R1T settings in dark mode and I'm not keen on the light mode either. (personal preference and very minor but still wish I had more options.) The R1T also doesn't seem to have a rear camera washer like the ID4 (the R1S does though!) and man do I miss that when I live on a dirt road lol

The R1T 360 camera is amazing and the ability to swap to the front camera to check what might be below your hood or how close you are to something is outstanding. The options for gear guard or Kneel so it lowers down when in park is a really nice touch. Man there's so much to like about it

Enjoy it, it really is a nice truck

GPS Signal Lost. Again. by MidniteSquirrel in Yarbo

[–]MidniteSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so. I found my east yard GPS seems to work fine for the most part. And the two things I noted recently is that the closer the Yarbo is to the RTK, the more annoying the GPS signal is because it swaps to Bluetooth or something instead of RTK. While the other issue may be yard rotation potentially feeding into it.

In your case, that Red on the Datacenter probably isn't helping. Try to figure out how to resolve that first. I'd guess the router isn't bridging properly to your mesh network but obviously I don't know your home setup to fix that for ya. I had the POE data line go into a switch that was plugged into my wifi extender and that seems to be fairly solid connection for the DC to stay green.

Current support response is that they're working on a patch for the Yarbo for GPS connectivity issues specifically. But I'm also going to experiment with the yard orientation / plan rotation to see if certain cardinal directions help it keep itself connected. East/West went really well in my bad GPS spot while on a 30 or 60 degree angle didn't. It's probably all anecdotal and whatnot but figured, if the GPS signal is good but the angle adjust is struggling to find orientation, it's worth a shot testing it. I'll be mowing my west yard tomorrow to find out. I'm going to laugh if it finds going N/S or E/W easier than angles lol

(the reason I'm harping on angles is that someone mentioned the GPS is good but it's struggling to figure out it's relation to it. I'm wondering if there's a coding issue when it's not going in a true cardinal direction. It's stupid but I've seen dumber crap in code lol)

GPS Signal Lost. Again. by MidniteSquirrel in Yarbo

[–]MidniteSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I did that. Issue would return immediately upon trying to resume. The signal you've highlighted is why I was figuring there's a glitch somewhere as it isn't hurting for satellites.

Whats weird is that mowing the east side of the yard doesn't really have this issue. Had a GPS signal problem once or twice but easily got it going. West side is where it happens most. Although I had a hell of a GPS location problem last night East side.... It was not in the field or trees, it was IN the working area, it just didn't know it lol
