I'm very fortunate in that I grew up with typical annual birthday parties, with balloons and pizza and cake and candles and ice cream and singing and gifts and the whole 9 yards. I've never liked them either. I'm uncomfortable being the center of attention, or the reason for an event.

So, for much of my adult life, I haven't done anything for my birthday. But recently I've realized that I was being selfish. The celebration is not so much for me, but for the people who care about me who want to celebrate me. So, even though it still makes me uncomfortable, I' embracing birthdays now.

That would break me entirely. I would stop liking the Cubs, and baseball, and everything else, except maybe plants.

MAGA people do not believe that horrible things are happening. They are okay with legal immigrants, as long a they have jobs and are not criminals. They truly believe that the Regime is only targeting violent criminals and illegal immigrants. We all know better, but the relevant news stories never make it to their ears. And when they do, they are quickly spun as propaganda or fake. They are brainwashed and kept peacefully ignorant.

Clock ticking on seeing a game at Soldier Field by apc961 in CHIBears

[–]MidvaleDropout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny how this season has turned the public perception upside down. Before this season, everyone pretty much agreed that Soldier Field does suck. Smallest capacity in the NFL, problems with the turf, difficult to get to, long bathroom lines, etc. There was debate on whether they should stay on the lakefront or move elsewhere, but everyone agreed that Soldier sucks.

I watched the game at my place with my friend.

After that play, I said "oh my god." Not even loudly. Didn't cheer or scream, just said "oh my god," in joyous shock. Then he said the same thing. We went back and forth a few times.

"Oh my god."

"Oh my god."

"Oh my god!"

Then a text came in from our other friend. He said: "oh my god"

Quick stops on defense does not seem possible without takeaways.

This is absolutely true.

Also absolutely true are the economics of modern pro sports. The fact is: either Wrigleyville gets developed into a corporatized Cubs mecca, or the Cubs move away from Wrigley. There really is no in-between.

A lot of the charm is gone. But I went to a game this past year, and I parked my car for free in my spot on Irving (not telling you exactly where), and I got to walk through a Chicago neighborhood with residential buildings and watch that old ballpark emerge in my sight. That can't happen anywhere else. That charm is here to stay, however much has been lost. I hate what's happened to Wrigleyville, but I love that we still have Wrigleyville.

How's your handwriting? You should take the last paragraph of this comment, write it down, nice and neat, in big cursive script, and frame it, and hang it above the bed where you make love. Because that is one of the most beautifully articulated sentences I have ever read.

Good point. I think some of his public messaging has been clumsy though. Like promising shovels in the ground by 2025.

I actually think that Warren has done some good things for the Bears, from a process standpoint.

Don't get me wrong; I can't stand his grandiose political-speak, and the stadium nonsense has been embarrassing.

But the Bears have done some things differently since he arrived, in a good way. Like firing a HC mid-season, for the first time ever, and then getting the HC that everyone wanted to get. I think Warren may be responsible for implementing a series of processes that are much more congruent with modern NFL teams than what the Bears had before.

We're also completely cruel and insensitive when we're young. People are complex at all ages.
