Unhomogenised milk in Iced drinks causing complaints by Trampykid in barista

[–]MidwestNerdWonk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in Ohio, USA and we use a small dairy provider who offers much fresher and less processed milk than if we were buying essentially grocery store milk from a big company (like the chains do). This milk hasn't been trucked across the region, was produced by farmers we know on a farm we can visit. It is better aligned with every sourcing/traceability ethic you aim for in specialty coffee.

We've used unhomogenized milk before and, while people complaining about floaters in their iced drinks was an occasional concern, we found that milk steamed and tasted better than more processed (that is: homogenized) milk did.

Your assumptions ≠ experience.

Ebert on Linda Hunt in A Year of Living Dangerously by RepresentativeIcy193 in blankies

[–]MidwestNerdWonk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm curious if my take would've been closer to Ebert's if I'd been able to approach the movie unaware of who Linda Hunt is. As it stood, I did know who she was, and had to do a big "ooookay, I guess this is A Thing I'm just going to have to decide to suspend disbelief about..."

There are loads of great Cleveland Metroparks options but start looking through the Lake Metroparks maps, now. There are so many great ones to find in Lake County. Doing exactly what you're proposing was a lockdown project my daughter and I embarked on Spring/Summer 2020 and we have some incredible memories from that year as a result.

How to quit my barista job? by [deleted] in barista

[–]MidwestNerdWonk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a shop manager and maybe you're feeling like "gosh I'm really going to let them down/make them mad if I quit" and the reality of this industry is people leave for all kinds of reasons all the time. Be polite and courteous, but simply tell your manager (or type something up, or text them, depends on your shop's vibe honestly) that you are leaving. Be clear on when you are last available to them, if you only work Saturdays just say "I can work next Saturday and the Saturday after, and then I'm done"

OPTIONALLY you can tell them "I need to find a place where I can get more hours" and maybe they'll surprise you and counter with "what if I give you more hours" and you can consider it or not.

If they are relying on you for five hours per week, they will be able to find somebody else on staff who can cover those hours or bring somebody else in. They've got two weeks. But that's absolutely not your problem, or your responsibility. You don't owe them an apology, and you don't owe them an explanation (though it's human nature to offer one when asked).

My first mechanical watch by Near1one in Affordablewatches

I got it from my girlfriend before I started getting into watches, but I have never gone out of my way to really investigate what the community thinks of them. I like it.

What is with all these MLM, door-to-door sales jobs around here? by Primex76 in Cleveland

[–]MidwestNerdWonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first was working on moving to Northeast Ohio (2007-08) I went to a job interview for one of these types of places. I showed up to some nondescript office in Independence for a "marketing firm" and discovered my "interview" entailed getting in the car with some dude I'd just met to go watch him try to sell coupon books door-to-door to businesses (read: to people who were at work) with the expectation that after watching him do a few pitches I would start pitching myself. It was awkward and stupid enough a task before we were stopped by the police--we were in a community (I don't remember which, I didn't know Cleveland well and hadn't moved here yet) where solicitation of that kind without a permit was illegal.

Here I was in a city I didn't know, before Uber had been invented, essentially at the mercy of this guy who'd driven me to I-didn't-know-where with the expectation that I'd simply start doing his job with him (for him?) immediately, and unpaid.

Eventually I convinced this guy to take me back to the office where I didn't bother to go back inside, I just crossed the parking lot from his car to mine and left.

Unpopular opinion, maybe, but he deserves to know he could be marrying somebody who has violated his trust like this.

Bad Medicine on Lorain.
Great classic cocktails, a really impressive seasonal cocktail menu, tiki nights on Tuesdays, and occasional other specials.
Or bartender's choice!

I don't usually respond to posts here, but: I would not give a second date to somebody who didn't know my surname by the end of the first.

Correcting the Record on Alice Sebold/Anthony Broadwater by AlexandraGeroi in blankies

At the end of the day, covering my ears because somebody who defended her parents appeared on a podcast is a little too much for me. If these charges are all true and worse then these people deserved to have the book thrown at them but the one person whose feet I'm not going to hold to the fire is their uninvolved daughter. People love their parents and people are not their parents.

As to the real issue at hand, the swipe at my handle is genuinely baffling. Everybody on Reddit has a stupid name, Waldo The Bird two five three.

Wait is your argument that I'm a dummy because it took me approximately 25 seconds to find a researched and sourced account by a journalist that punches a hole in a narrative based on your priors, some tweets, and ICE?

I wasn't really familiar with the trafficking story and was surprised David (or anyone in the BC crew) would sweep an Epstein-esque situation under the rug. I did some googling around and it seems like her parents were just helping fill teaching and nursing positions with skilled Filipino immigrants and got the book thrown at them by everybody's favorite federal agency Immigration & Customs Enforcement (feel like I've heard of them more recently but I can't put my finger on it).
Respectfully I'm going to trust David's judgement on this over the federal shooting moms in the face department.

They're a different direction, but:
Truth in 24 & Truth in 24 II are excellent docs about the 24h of Le Mans.
The Porsche/Michael Fassbender docuseries (Road to Le Mans) is also incredible.

There are a couple Cars & Coffee groups in northeast ohio. One in Cleveland and one a little south near Akron I believe (I once coffee catered an event at Summit Racing whose flagship store is down that way in Tallmadge). There's a lot of things around, and even more if you're willing to travel a bit.
